How do non-Catholics justify stealing Catholic Churches?

Might I point out that, whatever one may think of anglicanism, the CoE on an instititutional level is the former Catholic Church in England. Cathedral/parish churches weren’t pinched at all - better to complain about the abbey churches confiscated during the dissolution.

Some of the Lutherans may similarly have legitimate claim to churches within their jurisdictions - obviously, with the reformation being so messy there will have been plenty of naughtiness too.
so they’re like, we don’t want to be members of the catholic church anymore, we’re just going to leave, oh yeh, by the way, we’re going to take this church with us. that’s like a family member saying, I’m no longer part of this family! by the way, could you get off my property now?

Hate to break it to you but during the many years of war in Europe that stemmed from the Reformation atrocities and bad things were committed by both sides. Many of the Protestant leaders had death warrants placed on them, and many were actually executed, by the Catholic Church. Protestant places of worship were destroyed and taken as well. You have also failed to understand that many Cahtolic churches were converted over to protestant churchs it was because the majority of the town converted too. Guess that would be an example of attrition right…😉 (i.e. many of the pagans in an area converted to Christanity so the Pagan shrine was remade into a church).

This whole thread reminds me of the annoying evangelical girl in my exchange class in college. We were touring southern Germany and she would say silly things like…“How could the Catholic Church be so evil as to build these Cathedrals by exploiting the poor”…then follow it up after seeing an exhibit on the damage cause by the WWII allied bombings with “How could the allies be so evil as to bomb these beautiful Cathedrals”. Okay…yeah looking real smart there.

My answer to all of this is, doesn’t matter how it was built or why, God is using that church to work for his greater good now. Doesn’t matter to me if it’s a protestant built church, a catholic built church, or one that has been reperposed by wither side, God is working there now for his greater good. As to the WWII comment…I would happily have destroyed any protestant or catholic church if it had lead to the war ending sooner and saved even one more life.

Seriously Phil8888 get off your high horse. I don’t know if you meant to or not, but you are coming across very rude, and uneducated. When Catholics start expressing attitudes like this it makes those of us who are protestants glad we are not Catholic, and only serve to drive a wedge between everyone. We are supposed to be identified as Christians by our love, charity, and forgiveness. After 500 some odd years… maybe it’s time to drop the “you excommunicated me, you burned or stole my church, you sentenced me to death” talk and bury the hatchet.

I was just wondering how they justified it. why would they even want a catholic church in the first place, if they thought it was so bad? kind of interesting.

I think that your fanaticism is not being taken well for obvious reasons. You should rethink this rhetoric that you are spewing here and get off the hate wagon against Protestants. This is already getting to be old hat and strives nowhere in a positive direction to create meaningful dialogue to those which your church considers separated brothers and sisters.
What were you first?

One of these days Catholics will get it through there heads that most of the early Protestant leaders were trying to Reform abuses of power they saw in the Catholic Church, they did not hate it, they hated the way that certain people within it were behaving at the time. Many of the German towns that converted really didn’t change how they actually worshipped that much, they were just severing the allaince with Rome. They didn’t hate their town church so why destroy it. Seriously silly question here.

Also for the record, most litergical or high protestant churchs (those that actually come out of the Reformation, and are organized into synods or councils) DO NOT hate the Catholic Church. I’m Lutheran…I don’t hate the Catholic Church (that would be really strange since I’m married to a Catholic man) …I don’t believe that they worship idols, or are evil. I assue that when I get to heaven…you all will be there to. You are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, and stir the pot to create controversy.

I guess it can be good because one day little Johnny is in a lutheran or anglican church with his mom and he says mommy, who built this church? and then she’ll tell him that Catholics built it, if she’s honest.

SERIOUSLY…are you just trying to **** people off…now all protestants lie too. Come on.

If my furture kid ever asks me who built our church I will say…I have no idea, because I don’t know the names of the several Contracting Companies that have worked on my church, but it was built for our congregation in the 70’s, and added on to several times since then. However I will tell my child that it was built for people who want to Worship God.

If we are ever in Europe, and my future kid asks that question, I hope the church will have an English printed bulletin on their church history. It would take several paragraphs at least to explain the history of most major Cathedrals and churches in Europe… which were often built on top of pagan sites, in several stages, funded be several different local lords or kings, designed by several different architects, with art by many different artists, worked on by hundreds of different craftsman and laborors. Some even changed hands between Protestants and Catholics while being built. I will also tell my child that these churchs to were built as a place to Worship God. Which of course is the most important part of a Church, that it is a House of God, and that he is present there.

I didn’t say all protestants lie, I didn’t even say one protestant lies. I just said that if a woman was in a church built by Catholics and her son asked her who built it, she would say Catholic, assuming she’s honest 🙂

“A major strength of the Catholic Church is its unity. We should strive to keep it that way.”

You should take your own advice. You not promoting Unity or Strength, with your rude and inflamitory remarks. You are merely striking out and showing your own insecurity and weakness, while driving people away.

Just because someone doesn’t share your exact views or beliefs doesn’t automatically make them lying, hateful, or wrong. There is beauty and wonder all around us, and you will miss 90% of it if you are only willing to look at things that are solely 100% Catholic.

Why on earth would you assume someone whould lie about who built a church. And why would you assume that said hypothetical woman would be anything but honest. And as I posted above…who built a church is not a simple one word answer. Whatever…this thread is pointless.

I assumed she was honest. 🙂 I’m Catholic and Catholics believe the Catholic Church contains the fullness of the truth.

Catholics under Elizabeth I were not helped by the treasonable acts in which some of them engaged: the involvement of some Jesuit hot-heads & traitors did anything but help loyal & falsely accused men such as St. Edmund Campion. Not all were guilty of treason - but enough were, to make all the Company look like fifth columnists.

With events such as:
  • the Northern Rising - 1569-70
  • **the deposition of Elizabeth I (which would have had grave temporal effects if it had worked) - 1570 **
  • the Babington Plot - 1586
  • the attempted invasion by the “Invincible” Armada -1588
    **as well as **
  • the very bloody persecution of Protestants by the Spanish in Flanders
  • the slaughter of French Protestants in the last week of August 1572 (& the Pope’s praise of this)
**there was not much reason to trust the loyalty of Catholics - especially as the doctrines that **
  • no faith should be kept with heretics
  • mental reservations could be used to qualify the speaker’s words without any outward sign of this
**were still on the go. **

**Even apart from all that, the succession was not secure - & she had to play off other (& more powerful) rulers, so that they would not combine against England. At this time, Spain was a Catholic Colossus, stretching all the way from Italy to Mexico; it was very strong, very rich, seemingly invincible. So much so, that despite the drawback of 1588, the myth of its military invincibility did not shatter until it was hammered by the French in 1643. **

**IMO, she did extremely well. 🙂 **

To the list of plots (not intended to be exhaustive, I realize), one might add Ridolfi’s, in 1571, Throckmorton’s, in 1583, or Parry’s in 1586, among other plots of varying import. And the point would not be to attempt to morph Good Queen Bess into Best Queen Bess, but to point out what other posts have said before. History is complex, and the deeper you are into it, the more things you will discover. Waving cardborad cutouts, from either direction, is not to be in history at all. And we know how desireable being deep in history is.

What’s the Thames Swim Team?
Think about it…it’s like the Tiber Swim Team, but for the Anglican Church. Which is based out of London…which is on the river Thames.
Which district of London did you have in mind? Canterbury is in the Garden of England. There are no London postal districts numbers down there. If that’s the reason for the mimicry, might not Great Stour Swim Team be more appropriate nomenclature?

Geographically,

Good idea. I dont think the Catholic Church gave away their churches, and no one paid for them. So I think now they should get them back. They put a lot of time and effort into building those churches.
Here’s how I see it. The Crown stole the churches in order to make a profit by selling the property to nobility. Since then, the property may have exchanged hands many times.

But who cares!?! In the scheme of things, what matters is God’s work. The way in which those churches return to the Catholic church is by way of the people returning.

To the point someone made that the churches are Protestant because the people are Protestant, this is true today and I agree. At the time they were stolen by the British Crown, it was convert to the King’s Church or die. So it’s not really the point of what faith were the people. But, what was stolen by the Crown, which includes the faith of the people. This is priceless and the monetary value of the buildings mean nothing when compared.

However, there are a few churches who by the grace of God remained Catholic, as did the people.

What kind of garbage is this? This is pure unadulterated hatred unfounded and unwarranted. And the Catholic church expects charitability in dialogues with Protestants and the Eastern Orthodox? Please… Nobody needs to put up with this garbage!
Catholics, Protestants. Jews and Muslims are all lables/tags, on humans who claim God belongs to them, this is religious separatism ,

only the Jews have a old law that allows looting, yet many of the other religious groups have used items looted from their enemies to build churches,

maybe the reason is --the hatred that exists among those reigious separatist groups,

Claiming God belongs to your GOD CLUB is the major problem,

Protestants build a church,
Catholics build a church,

so if either of the groups were to change their faith/allegance,
Catholics become Protestants so the original builders are now none catholic.builders would you say the Catholics built the Church , yes you would to keep stiring the hatred, this thread is about stiring hatred, the same is happening in Israel, the Jews claim they own the site of the Holy Mosque

Right, these churches weren’t actually owned by the Catholic Church. They were built by the state and were used for the English church, which was at this time Catholic. When the Church split it changed from being the Church in England to the Church of England. The property stayed in hands of the state. No property was ‘stolen’.
