So does this apply to Hindus and Muslims and atheists as well?

While I certainly agree with you (if you’re making this point, which I am not certain that you are!) that we can only proclaim the Gospel, and the rest is up to the individual and the Holy Spirit…I’m still not sure where you draw the line. Must you believe in Christ? Must you believe in the Virgin Birth? What about the Trinity?
just to jump in this thread again before it closes and because i have recently been involved in a discussion on this topic do you believe a christian must believe in all three of those things to be a christian ? i do believe in the first and the third and believe those are a must but i dont believe in a virgin birth so would yoou then have it that i could not be a christian ?

in my own personal view to be a christian you must believe in jesus , the trinity and abide by the two greatest commandments to the best of your ability . the rest is down to your own conscience as to what other parts you have your faith in.

St.Paul seemed non committal on this one ,the joining of such couple,Such union could put the believers faith at risk, alwhile while wieghing married love in the equation, would the Bishop decide.
Are you saying either the other spouse converts or too bad.
My parents have horses. If you have ever hitched a team, you quite quickly realize it is a team. It they aren’t working together, you are in for a mess of trouble. You start to realize that some horses work better than others. We have two that we can’t even put in the same pasture, so I can’t imagine trying to team them.

Thnaks for the memeories, we used to use a team for chores…When the load was easy the bigger horse rode in the sliegh but when time came for pulling he stepped right up and both horses dug in and pulled.Have you ever had a runaway oh boy what fun…

On this forum, many people have discussions, debates, and sometimes battles about differences in doctrine! Who’s wrong, who’s right? Do we all follow and strive to obey Jesus’s Commandments, or do we waste precious time in pointless discussion about doctrinal differences? For instance, you believe that one must go to confession on a weekly basis, while I do not see the need! And there are more marriages than you think that are catholic married to noncatholic! Are they both Christians? Yes, so how do you determine who, if anyone has to convert! Where did they get married; obviously not in a catholic church, right?🤷
So it doesn’t matter the doctrine just as long as one believes that the Catholic church is wrong.
Sorry i don’t believe one needs to recieve the sacrement of reconcillation weekly. And neither does the Church.
The Church does and has not taught that the non-catholic spouse must convert. And whenever such a marriage is celebrated in the Church the non-catholic party must agree beforehand in wirtting that thier children will be raised Catholic.

Then the Jesus you follow is not the Christ of scripture, for it was written of old that a virgin would bring forth a child and the gospel writers also wrote of the virginal birth of Christ.

I guess I would ask, if you believe the other prophecies of Christ, why does the virgin birth create a stumbling block?

I would have more of a problem if it wasn’t a virgin birth.

Luckily, now in our neck of the woods, our only runaways are riding horses and not teams. Ours have to run like 4 miles before they could put themselves into any serious danger (but a mad/crazy horse is not something you want in your path). Ours normally calm down by that time they reach the main road (that or we can get around them and at least protect them).

We have had to rebuild our sliegh after one runaway…made a big mess of it…another runaway we got lucky in that the horses went on each side of a guy wire and got stopped.

Now you are putting words in my mouth:eek: I have never outright said that the catholic church was wrong, but reading your post(s), one could surmise that if you do not agree with the cc, you are wrong(a bit sensitive aren’t we?) Just because I don’t personally go to a priest, or believe it is necessary for me; does not mean it is wrong for you! And my Saviour( I hope you SERVE the same One), did not tell me to go to a priest weekly! Why must the non-catholic spouse have to convert, and the children be raised catholic! Sounds like exclusivity jumping off here! And just because you and I don’t see eye-to-eye, does not mean I don’t love you as my brother in Christ! Oh, and that plank is still in your eye!

As long is it isn’t Catholic,😃

This is what I believe: There is One God, represented in three persons(Father,Son, Holy Spirit) Jesus Christ is the only Begotten Son of the Living God(The only One worthy of the title Holy Father). Jesus died for ALL of our sins on the Cross! After three days, He was resurrected, and will return someday to claim His Bride(that would be all of us who are in Christ Jesus). He was born of a virgin(Mary), whom I don’t believe had an immaculate conception! I also believe that salvation is available to ALL of God’s children! And as my Lord said,“Whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” I do not believe in going to confession weekly(Jesus is my mediator), corpuses on crosses(He was removed by two members of the Jewish High Council),or purgatory!

Do you not realise that it was by Christ being on the cross is what gave the cross it’s “postion”…Are you claiming that because Christ is depicted on the cross we beleive Him to still there…too funny. You know i find that it’s those that wave the plank in the eye verse around that tend to have a plank so big they can not even see but still claim to see.

Well if you don’t agree with His Church then yeah you are wrong.
Just because I don’t personally go to a priest, or believe it is necessary for me; does not mean it is wrong for you! And my Saviour( I hope you SERVE the same One), did not tell me to go to a priest weekly!
Again with the weekly confesssion have you no control of yourself that you feel this is needed.
Why must the non-catholic spouse have to convert
a bit short there no mention anywhere of the spouse converting just that the spouse must agree before hand that the children be raised Catholic
, and the children be raised catholic! Sounds like exclusivity jumping off here!
that my friend is the Church caring for the souls of the little ones…Unlike others that say let them run amuck.
And just because you and I don’t see eye-to-eye, does not mean I don’t love you as my brother in Christ!
some times i find that hard to believe given how you have made light of some of my words in the past. And no i am not holding it against you,You think that i do not love you as a brother in Christ as well?
Oh, and that plank is still in your eye!
Wrong again had surgey yesterday and the plank was removed.😃

We all know what it takes to be saved, which includes those things you have listed!
Actually, there is no list of “what it takes to be saved” in the Bible. Catholics believe in the entire Deposit of Faith.

And, it’s not true at all that “we all know what it takes to be saved”–there’s at least 40,000 different versions of what people think it means to be saved.

Do you want to go and tell a Hindu or a Muslim, that they believe wrongly? Better take that plank out of your eye first! A friend of mine, who happens to be a Lutheran, said that he has been sharing the Word with a Muslim and a Jew where he works. The two of them told my friend that Christians(American Christians specifically) were very judgemental, rude and arrogant towards those of differing faiths! We have a former Muslim who attends our church(he got saved in 2007). I do not draw lines, God draws lines! What we humans tend to do is blur the lines, complicate the Gospel, and on many an occasion, keep people away from church! You can’t deny that there are many arrogant and exclusive religions out there!
Well, of course there’s a way to spread the Gospel–always with gentleness and reverence.

Catholics are not drawing lines, any more than you are drawing lines when you witness to Hindus and Muslims. We’re just proclaiming the Truth to you! 👍

Nondenominational Christians do not seem to have as many disagreements about doctrinal issues, rather worshpping, serving and following Christ!
I believe God called us to love Him with our entire hearts, MINDS, souls and strengths.

Understanding doctrinal issues is loving God with our MINDS. If we do not understand doctrines, we do not understand Him.

(Certainly, as one wise Catholic once said, “If you understand Him, He is not God”, but doctrines and dogmas help us to get that miniscule drop of water of understanding of the Ocean of God.)

One ought not dismiss doctrines as unimportant and divisive. For one then dismisses Truth.

And Love without Truth and understanding is not Love.

in my own personal view to be a christian you must believe in jesus , the trinity and abide by the two greatest commandments to the best of your ability . the rest is down to your own conscience as to what other parts you have your faith in.
I don’t understand where you get this “personal view” of what you must believe in to be a Christian. Does it come from Scripture? From a “feeling” you got once? 🤷

Just because I don’t personally go to a priest, or believe it is necessary for me; does not mean it is wrong for you!
Aaagghhh! That is a paradigm designed in hell, in my opinion, 1beleevr! **

There are sooo many principles one could apply that logic to:
  • Slavery may be wrong for me, but it’s not wrong for you!
  • There is ONE God for you, but I believe there’s many!
  • Homosexuality may be wrong for you, but it’s not wrong for me!
  • Jesus may be God for you, but for me, he was just a good teacher!
**Note: Please don’t read into my reference to hell. There is nothing demonic at all about your posts or you or anything about you. I’m just saying that this idea that “it’s wrong for me but not for you” or “it’s ok for you but not for me” is just what the devil ordered!

I sat in a new members class for a church once and we all talked about the church basics. At the very end there was a question and answer session there was a couple who timidly raised their hands and the husband asked what the church felt about married couples of different faiths joining the church. I could see the leaders ponder it a second and then ask, “what faiths?” He said he was a Jew and she was a Christian. They were quietly led off to another room to talk with an elder.

I think even at a non-denominational church, they would still require being a Christian.
I think we should distinguish between being a member of the congregation and being welcome to attend.

]

I have heard of many successful marriages where the couple were members of different religions, and they couldn’t be happier! Talked last year to a coupe(he’s a catholic, she’s a Jew), who split time between their respective churches! So I guess it is possible for two people of differing faiths to marry and share their faith with each other! I don’t think one or the other should feel obligated to convert!
thats a tough one. One believes Jesus is God the other believes Jesus is fraud.
