How do people become possessed?

Emily Rose was a character in a movie, and I have heard at least one exorcist comment on how that film was completely inaccurate as to the actual process of becoming possessed. Simply sitting around in a state of grace of suddenly finding one’s body possessed by demons is not the way these things work.

The real person on whom Emily Rose was based is generally understood to have been a willing victim soul.
I’m not referring to the movie. And yes, the real Emily Rose was a willing soul; however, many victim souls choose this when God creates them. It’s not always God asking an adult whether s/he would do this. So one of us could be a victim soul and not know it.

Fr. Amorth said that regardless of how one becomes associated with demons, God allows it. Often it’s to get that person to become more faithful in prayer.

One has to open themselves to the demonic in some way, and God has to permit the demon to posses a person’s body as a result.

People talk about doing obvious things to get possessed, while the natural consequence of even one mortal sin is effectively demonic possession.

Most of us are shielded from those effects.

However, I’ve also heard an exorcist opine that as many as two-thirds of United States males might very well be plagued by demonic obsession, and pornography is the number one reason.
Fr. Amorth, who’s done thousands of exorcisms, disagrees with you about the necessity of being open to demons (though he does say God has to permit it). Fr. Amorth talks about ways that people have become afflicted through no fault of their own, from curses, hexes or other such spells.

I highly recommend his book. While it’s scary because it’s true, he also repeatedly tells us not to be frightened as God is stronger than Satan. He also discusses how much demons hate the Blessed Mother, which is comforting.

Is this something you just stumble upon or do you have to make an effort for it to happen? Exorcist moves scare the life out of me. Does watching them mean demons will come for me or something? I feel like even learning or curiosity about demonic possessions will lead to them.
Perhaps God allows the person to be possessed so that the person would find help later on. The Church Fathers had great sympathy to the possessed because they thought it was a sign for the possessed person to receive help. Not everyone becomes possessed but everyone must encounter temptation in their life but in order to help those who were more inclined to sin the Lord may give permission for the devil to possess such a person. I do not believe the devil can do more harm on us as he is permitted to do because God only gives the devils certain parameters to follow but when a person begins to sin greatly or even to prevent a person to continue sinning greatly the Lord may permit possession as to allow the person to become healed later on with the prescribed prescriptions. In the case of St.Seraphim of Russia, the great Orthodox saint was permitted untold attacks by the devils. Although the saint was never possessed he had experienced this great struggle in order to transform him into a great saint. We all have inherited certain weaknesses, some more than others. As the devils were given permission by God to do battle with this Orthodox monk it is certain when people do not choose what is right that God might allow possession to occur in order to correct the situation. It seems to happen in order to arrive at a greater good. The Orthodox monk who did battle with the devils did not waver from his goal to be united with Christ and his victory was rewarded with great sanctity. The possessed person is also one of God’s children and perhaps this is the only way God will be able to reach to such a person.

God permits demonic possession? I have heard of the whole pornography being a gateway drug to possession

The German girl that Emily Rose was based off. That story scares the life out of me. What the hell went wrong?

She chose to remain possessed so that people would hear her story. Like Fr. Amorth said, way too many people “forgot” that demons exist and are quite active. He blasts a lot of bishops for this. Emily allowed herself to be used as an instrument to wake people up to the fact that even if we ignore demons, that doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

So nothing went wrong. God allowed this (and Emily agreed) to teach us.

she is so kind sacrificing herself for the greater good of mankind

People get possessed when they become fascinated with evil.
I don’t recommend it.

I think there is a healthy fear of such things. When this fear is diluted, like flirting with vampires, questionable “games” that cross the boundary between just entertaining and the occult, Ouija boards that invites spirits, substance abuse, etc., then the path is easier to trod, but no less dangerous.

Sometimes behavior as in what is termed “personality disordered” seems to come out of a script book. Online support groups give this astonishing corroboration that they do behave alike with even the same vocabulary. I don’t know where it originally came from but one of my close relatives had an uncontrollable filth mouth. I spoke to a savvy woman at a church 22 years ago about this subject and she said that possession can come from acts of immorality. There may have been incest in this case. An overwhelming sense of shame distorts the personality from childhood up and worse when repressed.

But that alone doesn’t make for possession. A person can have a trauma and try to overcome it. In this case and still is, behavior is revealing, an absolute urge for meanness, greedy and destructive in relationships. It’s funny with all the gender benders going around, she said that she identified as a “man”, but one would never know it when she was in the “wounded bird” mode, trying to get attention and pity for herself.

Another person who also had an uncontrollable mouth actually said, he was not “in control”! Well, if he isn’t, then WHO is? Also he had an impulse to talk constantly about his sexual exploits. I said this person should not be around young people as he is a teacher and if he is not openly destructive, he doesn’t do any good either. “By their fruits you shall know them”, really applies here.

How to avoid such people and I think we should, is a problem since they do come across as being charming and seductive at first. They are masters of confidence trickery.

One film that really drove this home was “Dear Zachary”. The woman who killed this 28 year old doctor was pregnant with their son. Somehow she slipped through the Canadian legal net, and eventually committed suicide with the year old kid strapped to her. The unfortunates in the story were the parents of Zachary who followed her to Canada to take care of the grandchild, while suppressing their rage against the person who they knew killed their son.

Such a woman can go through society and not be detected for the devil that she was. The parents also wrote a book about having to deal with such an evil person. One trait that emerged from the film was her emotional flatness. She kept saying, “mummy loves you”, but the kid didn’t really believe it and preferred his grandparents. This probably angered her the most.

God save us from such evil!!!

BUt what did she accomplish thru this…it didnt change anything, the world still thinks the same way?

In fact I really think, 100 demons and satan himself could fly down and land on Times square, manifested in the form that many people think they look, (horns, bat like wings, 20 ft tall, etc) and majority of people would not even believe it was real!! LOL They would say it was a elaborate hoax, drugs in the water, etc etc.

I think we can all agree, whether one believes in possession of any kind, that it can never been an excuse or defense for one’s actions.

The devil made me do it.

The woman I mentioned above had a habit of blaming others for her own actions. Her frequent refrain was “you made me do it, you made me curse”, etc., said to young children as well. She thought religion was baloney but made sure her kids outwardly performed all their obligations mainly for show. Obviously, she felt herself out of control so someone else must be responsible for what she was doing, like a robot. The sewer mouth though was really over the top, and very suspicious in my opinion, not just a personality disorder but something else.

I read something like 80% of the people who come in for exorcism have actually be sexually abused in their childhood.

Without going into too much detail, I feel the case I mentioned is a family disease. The sister of this woman was really bad news, horribly abused her own daughter, and other unsavory stuff I won’t mention here. Another sister, probably the “best” of all three, was incredibly selfish.

These were children of a saintly immigrant woman who toiled in a sweatshop for 40 years. It boggles my mind where all this evil came from. It couldn’t be just psychological or cultural. None of the sisters were religious in any way. If they ever went to church it was only to show up for holidays. Something about church and religion repelled them. Maybe someday I’ll figure it out or the secret will be revealed to me

perhaps it is better not to know. This is honestly creepy.

I’m not sure ignorance is better. The truth does set one free in the sense that if you know whom or what you are fighting, you have a better chance of defeating it. Also this is set so far back in history that the source is or reason for all this badness is already gone.

The problem is how the gut wrenching resentment is passed onto the next generations. There is such a pool of residual hatred among the children who don’t have a clue where it is all coming from. Instead, there is a need to act out and persecute the weakest members who in turn become fed up. I wonder if there will ever be a chance for reconciliation, that the sins of the parents will not be carried forever by the children. I tried reaching out to some but all I get is a slap in the face, or even worse.

I’m not referring to the movie. And yes, the real Emily Rose was a willing soul; however, many victim souls choose this when God creates them. It’s not always God asking an adult whether s/he would do this. **So one of us could be a victim soul and not know it. **
Source for the statements in bold, please?

A Nun told me this. We were talking about my friend, whose little boy is dying.
Sorry, but I don’t find hearsay to be compelling enough to accept those statements as fact. 🤷

As much as I have a great respect for nuns, they are not infallible. I don’t know the context (it doesn’t sound like possession was likely even the context) or the details of what was said (nor am I asking), and I don’t know her source for this idea. I can’t find any evidence of this being a teaching of the Church, only that the status of any victim soul is a matter of private revelation.

I might agree with the idea that a victim soul does not always have to be an adult. It’s the “could be a victim soul and not know it” part that I find highly suspect.

If you only take the counsel of those protected by the charism of infallibility, you won’t be accepting many statements as fact from anyone…

As a person who has had 12 years of Catholic School, I have a really hard time with this. I never heard of such a thing. There is a difference between being tempted and even persecuted but possession is an entirely different ball game. No one should be “open” to it.
