All we have at our parish are pew cards that contain the people’s responses. Since we don’t have missals, how do we even know that the priest is using the all of new translation or not?

I ask this because some priests have decided to “do their own thing” and continue on with the old translation.

It’s somewhat all or nothing. Either the gold-edged Missal up in the Sanctuary is the old one or the new one. It would be a bit difficult to mix and match.

I would encourage you not to be overly suspicious of your priest. Cut him some slack. 😉

I can tell our priests are using the new translation because there is a lot of stuttering and stammering, starts, stops and restarts!!

Is there some reason to think your priest is not using the new missal?

If the parts he is praying match what is on your pew cards – for example, the new version of the Creed – then he is taking it from the new missal. Unless he has a second missal on the altar I would assume that the other prayers he is saying are also from the new translation.

Well, this past Sunday, we used part of the old and part of the new. He even announced that it would be that way. He said we will be introduced to the new translation little by little. There has been NO preparation for us, except for the priest making negative remarks for a couple of months about the then “upcoming” new translation. He held it in derision and continually made fun of it. Very, very disheartening.

get an annual Sunday missal, or check the missalette, most have the priest’s prayers, Eucharistic prayers etc. as well as the people’s responses.

Another question: Is it even licit anymore to use the old translation?

I would think, if a priest is being stubborn and refuses to use the new translation, he’s at least being disobedient. If there’s any sin involved, it’s on his part, not on the part of the congregation, since they’re pretty much the equivalent of an innocent bystander.

If you are uncertain, just get a missal and follow along.

The Orthodox don’t have standard translations of the Liturgy so I can only sympathise to a certain extent 🙂 but I would have one warning:

I don’t think it’s good for you, spiritually, to be suspicious of your priest. If you’re watching the missal to make sure your priest is doing it right word for word, then you won’t be praying. I don’t know how “sins” work in the Catholic Church but from an Orthodox perspective, judging someone for their error is often a worse sin than the actual error they committed. After all, how can we correct others given the huge plank in our eye that blocks/clouds our perception of the world and our bretheren 😃

No, as of Saturday evening, November 26th, this year. None of the old translation should be used. We should all be using the new one.

This is something I’ve been wondering for a while. Good to know.
Not that it makes any difference if you want to attend the current liturgy. The 1970 missal should have been retired now. We should all be using the new one.
