How do women feel about chivalrious men?

Around here, “ma’am” is reserved for women who are at least one generation older than yourself. I don’t mind being called “ma’am” by kids, but I’d do a double-take if someone my own age or older called me that! 😛
In that case you should just stick with Mrs. Ms., etc.

However, I did come across a time when an old lady was referred to as “chick” and an older man was referred to as “dawg.”

Close friends call me by my first name, usually, and strangers call me “Mrs. McRae”. 🙂

Around here, the parents and grandparents - talking about us’ns - are making sure the grandbabies know how to, ‘yes mam, no mam, yes sir, no sir’ they are very proficient by the end of their two’s with it 😃

This is a sensitive topic for many, but I just wanted to ask. Some women feel that such men are degrading them. That’s just some of the things I’ve felt that other women believe. So how do you feel about these type of men (if their “chivalry” be sincere)?
I try to be chivalrous. Women generally react favorably.👍

It might depend a little on what part of the country you are from, but it is very alive and well from Virgina to Oklahoma to Texas.😉

By the way, a couple of questions for you Image:
  1. Why is someone 16yrs old asking this?
  2. What part of the States are you from?

I’ve never had a girlfriend before. I always get nervous and shy and I blush when they call me cute. But I’m think I ready (or almost ready) to have one. With the guys that I’ve talked to, they usually seem to be “vulgar” in a certain sense. I figured that I could counteract this by being chivalrous. I want to be a man, but I’ve had trouble making that transition.

I love my dad a lot, but even though we live in the same house, we can hardly approach each other as father and son. The men in our house are not exactly the most respectful towards women. I too am guilty of this, most especially towards my mother. I tend to yell at her sometimes and when she needs help, I tell her to call someone else. I love her too, but I don’t think she knows that. My actions seem to display a different feeling. Even with her friends, I have been disrespectful. One time I called one by their first name the entire time they stayed. She went and told my aunt. My aunt was completely appalled, but I even called my aunt by her first name as well. At that time, I really didn’t care what they thought…I was only 11. When I was a little younger (say 9) I called another one of my mom’s friends by her first name. She immediately was angry and threatened to punish me. I knew what I did was wrong, but I didn’t care that I offended her at all, I only grew to dislike her. It wasn’t until a substitute teacher in the 6th grade told us, that I somewhat realized that what I did was clearly unkind and hurtful. She told us about the South and how they say 'Ma’am" and “Sir” all the time, But I still dismissed what she said.
Now I’m 16, when I actually have to deal with women in a more intimate and personal manner than before, wouldn’t I want to respect each woman I see?

I believe that if the answer is yes, then it must begin with love and chivalrous actions towards my mother. She deserves my utmost respect and love. And I think from there it could transfer to my sister and other women I see. But, I’ve always been a little nervous about such actions.
  1. What part of the States are you from?
Do you mean what state I’m from? That would be Michigan.

Image, Check this out. I think you will find it fascinating and refreshing, check the Forums. And yes what is on the site is the norm for the educated(not necessarily college ed.) Southern Catholic/Christian man. Also, the South does not have monopoly on chivalry, it is just in the deep culture.

If you’re acquating chivalry with being courtious, polite and helpful toward women, then I’d say most women would respond favorably. Obviously, this way of behaving is going to elicit a more positive response than being rude, spiteful and a mysoginist (sic, a woman hater is what I mean but can’t spell  ) If it goes into the realm of being a milk-toasty doormat, then I’d say women would find you a wimp and lacking backbone. 👍

I really love all the encouragement for gentlemanly manners toward ladies that I’m seeing in this thread! 🙂 Speaking as a guy, I find it encouraging and I’ll be glad to try to be more this way and persist in what chivalrous behavior I have!

I hate how people from the South freely misjudge people from the North. It’s even worse when they are Southern Catholics misjudging Northern Catholics. I could talk about how lazy and unambitious people from the South (including Texas and Oklahoma) tend to be.

As I see it, the girl can open her own door. If she is on a date, the date should be a date and not be a butler interview. Girls should be treated with respect and dignity and as an equal while on a date (and every other time). That’s chivalry. Also, being expected to pay for the date each time is not called being a gentleman, it’s called being a doormat.

I remember holding the door for a girl once - she was ***extremely ***offended 😃

Which prompts the ancient question: “What do women want ?”.

Be polite - & they complain.
Be rude - & they complain.

These days, courtesy is the new rape 😦

If this has occurred, then I must have missed it. I don’t remember any judgment occurring…only that in the South, chivalry still does exist. They never said it didn’t in the North (as far as I know). But I can see why you would feel that way.

I love the idea of chivalry. I am an independent woman, but I still love when my husband opens doors for me, allows me to step out of the church pew to receive communion first, etc. My husband and I are raising our daughters to be self reliant, but I always emphasize the fact that it’s ok to let a man buy lunch, carry a package, etc. chivalry is not dead!

:rotfl:
But he women here seem to like politeness.

I checked it out and it looks interesting. I will have to read more later. 😉

Let’s not forget that these actions are corporal acts of mercy.

I hope I’m a protector.😃

I have refrained from saying that men should protect women because others might find it a tad sexist. But to see that women still want to be protected means a lot to me. Of course I need to learn how to protect myself first, but I thought those days were over.

Babydoc, who do you specifically define as a predator? A protector?
I sometimes have a little confusion about the protector thing myself. I think modern technology has “equalized” some of that. I live in a state where we can carry licensed concealed handguns. While I do not carry a gun, I have the right to…and if I ever felt threatened enough I could get a license and protect myself with it. That’s not to say that women are suddenly equal to men in physical strength…we can just avail ourselves of the same technologies as men.

I have several girlfriends who occasionally talk about how their husbands make them feel “protected”. Since I rarely feel threatened, I don’t understand what they mean. Protected from what?

I love chivalry and courtesy in men, but the protection thing does confuse me still. There are no longer Huns storming the gates of the city. Our society trades on brain power and finances…physical strength isn’t always necessary anymore, even for men.

(Now, heavy lifting and such…that I need a man’s help with! But it’s not fair for ladies to use you gents merely for your physical traits!) 🙂

It was said here that one can tell if someone is from the North based on how rude they are. One can tell if someone is from the South based on how quickly they quit working to get drunk.

And lulz @ not reading anything else in my posts.
