How do you deal with the starvation of innocent children?

Show me the Saint who who openly acknowledges seeking earthly joy, including that found from wine. Wine during the time of Christ was a widespread custom, but nowhere do we read of Christ having sought it out for its own enjoyment.
He made wine at a wedding; I’m sure he and the other guests were enjoying themselves while there. You seem to be saying here that it was fine because he was just going about his business, not on a quest to find wine. But then in the rest of this thread, it sounds like you expect people to stop going about their lives and direct all of their attention at a single problem whenever an injustice is occurring. Which would be always.

I’m honestly not sure what you expect people to do.

“Love not the world, nor the things which are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him.”
-1 John 2:15
A cheerful heart is a good medicine,
but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 17:22

EDIT: I mean I really shouldn’t rip things out of context like this, but it is Proverbs. The whole thing is made of individual sayings.

Just because Christ created wine does not in any way infer that He enjoyed it in and of itself.

I do not necessarily expect people to do anything, and if you read the first post you will see that I’m only asking people how they deal with it. On the other hand, I do get the impression that many people in the world are apathetic. To live in Christ’s LOVE, people must lament all injustices, such as starvation.

Why would he make wine if enjoying wine is a sin? That would make him complicit in their sin.

What would we have to do for you to call us anything other than apathetic? We care, but we don’t have the energy to feel sad all the time, and it would help absolutely nobody if we did.

Having the “correct” emotional reaction to a given situation may not be as important as you think it is. If anything, scripture tells us to do our best to be happy or joyful- it is “good medicine”.

I do not know why, but again, you can’t say that Christ Himself enjoyed it. 🙂 Perhaps wine is not sinful, but not Christ-like or virtuous.

And you can’t say that enjoying it is sinful, unless you want to imply that Christ is complicit in sin.

Plus, he probably drank wine pretty regularly- the purity of water wasn’t very good back then, so people drank diluted wine a lot because it was safer. 🙂

I am trying to figure out how to say that wine is what turns into Christ’s sacred blood without sounding flippant about it. I’m not sure it’s important.

What is important is that lots of people find joy in fellowship with others, or in stories, or in their work. Maybe they enjoy food or nature. These are good things- these are things that God created, things that existed before the fall into sin (or, in the case of stories, something that may or may not have existed before the fall, but which Christ himself used). I don’t understand why you think they shouldn’t feel that joy, simply because there are people dying horribly at this very second.

If we don’t try to have cheerful hearts and take our “good medicine”, then how are we supposed to help anybody else?

Was Christ ever filled with earthly joy? What about St Peter or St Paul? Do you know of any Saint who indulged in earthly joy? Yes, there are a lot of Saints who experienced LOVE, but Heavenly LOVE.
When Christ spoke of the beauty of something as simple as the lilies of the field, I think he was filled with earthly joy. Notice that he didn’t lament over their eventual destruction but took the time to appreciate something that is here today and gone tomorrow.

And you are kidding yourself if you think that Christ stood around like a sour puss at the wedding in Cana.

"The death of the just: Death will reach everyone, the good and the bad; but the destiny of each one is quite different. The just man sees himself in this valley of tears as a prisoner, serving a very hard term. He considers himself a slave in this world, suffering an extremely distressing servitude. He regards himself a sailor caught in a horrible storm. And as death means an end of his confinement, an end of his slavery, and is the port of his salvation, he ceases not to cry with David, ‘Woe is me that my sojourning is prolonged!’ (Ps. 119:5)… He ceases not to ask with the Apostle’… Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Rom. 7:24)”
-The Golden Key to Heaven, by Saint Anthony Mary Claret

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee to we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

You come off as a know-it-all, but you cannot back up anything you say with hard facts.

Actually that’s the way you come off. You are telling us we should all be miserable and if we disagree with you then all of us must be wrong!

Please provide the quote! We should all be empathic towards the starving, and not apathy.

I think it’s something like $12.00 a month to help save kids from dying of starvation. I just wish something more sustainable could be done in Africa.

…why is it that nothing can grow there? Why doesn’t the UN propose an irrigation system where crops and livestock could survive? Then there would be plenty if milk, vegetables and meat. 🤷

👍

With a little work, the starving people could become self-sufficient.

I saw this on yahoo answers:

"I am a a very old lady and when I was a child they were taking up donations for the starving children in Africa. As an adult I wondered why? Doing research, they have countries the size of our states.
With no federal government. 56 of those states were at war with each other last year.

20 years ago a team of farmers from Dos Palos California who knew how to farm went to Africa to help them. Donating tractors, fuel and other equipment. They dug wells and said it was some of the richest soil. With one of the largest fresh water rivers going across the Continent similar to Mississippi river. [Nile river} They grew a beautiful crop of grains, produce and even planted fruit trees. Before they could leave militants came into the area and plugged the wells, burned down the barns and destroyed the farm equipment. Until they get a good government they decided it would be impossible to help them. Tribal wars and religious wars goes on continually. In one of the richest soils and best climate in the world the people starve. Look at the people starving in Syria or refugees from there. While they could grow enough food to feed their people. It is war not lack of food that is causing the children and others to starve."

Yes, it can happen. But the UN would need to get involved. If we can occupy middle eastern nations through war why can’t we help these people? I say, the sooner the better.

Are you joking? The entire thrust of your thread and all the other threads you have started on the same topic is that nobody should live happy lives while there are poor and starving people in the world! In short you are saying we should all be miserable like you.
