Yesterday a thread here brought this situation to my attention. An assistant principal at Cincinnati’s Purcell Marian High School was fired for a statement in support of gay marriage he made on his blog. Purcell Marian is a Catholic high school and this man has also taught at another Cincinnati Catholic school, Moeller High School. When I read his statement it struck me as similar to the points of view many of my friends have voiced to me in recent years. These same friends are just like me and just like this man, formed from our youth through Catholic education. I seriously am seeking opinions as I truly believe that this reflects the thinking of many, many Catholic people today.

Fired? I dont know if thats the right thing to do. But I feel that the school definitely has the right and ought to do something about the issue because he isnt teaching what he is supposed to.

However, I dont know if firing is the answer, I feel maybe they should have talked to him about the issue first.

The problem is that Our Lord warned us not to be conformed to the ways of this world but to follow him because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Scriptures and Catholic Teaching are quite clear. Marriage is a Sacrament between a man and a woman. Male and Female He created them. And our Lord cast Adam into a deep sleep and fashioned for him a companion from his rib. When he awoke Adam exclaimed, " here is indeed a companion of my own flesh, " and Adam called his companion, " Woman. And Our Lord told the people, " For this reason a man leaves the house of his parents, to cleave to the side of his wife."

A Catholic cannot believe in or support " gay " marriage. A Catholic is bound in conscience to believe with Catholic Faith all that the Church teaches in Faith and Morals.
You have to choose whether you are going to be a faithful Catholic or not. Numbers don’t matter, the opinion of your friends don’t matter. On judgment day Our Lord isn’t going to ask you if your friends agreed with you or if you agreed with them. He will ask you how you have lived your Catholic Faith. Linus

Its a case of someone believing what they want to be not what the Church teaches. Not being in communion with the Church but still wanting to use that affiliation as a validation for an argument. Its like creating God in your own image and having the arrogance to say "If I was God this is the way I’d do it. "

I have no idea as to statistics but Catholics who are really in communion with the Church certainly don’t feel that way! The rest are really Catholic in name only.
 
I live in a suburb of Cincinnati and been checking some of the comment sections on this story (I’ve since stopped due to frustration) and it has really brought out the anti-Catholic crowers, calling the arch-diocese everything from hypocrites, intolerant, and of course the obligatory posts regarding pedophilia.

What this asst. principal, many Catholics and anti-Catholics don’t understand is that when you are in a position of authority and teaching at a Catholic Institution (whose first priority is to instruct our youth on Catholic doctrine) and you post/teach/opine something contrary to Church teaching and it is accessible by your students, the students are getting the message that it is perfectly acceptable to pick and choose those doctrines that you agree with and will follow. He is also undermining himself and his colleagues with this activity. If he were to teach proper Catholic doctrine in the future and the students know his personal beliefs to the contrary, why then would they take that teaching seriously?

Another issue that I have is, what appears to be his official school photo, has him in a baseball cap worn backwards with an earring. Whether intentional or not, this is sending a message to the students that says “Hey, I’m one of you, your friend. I’m not part of the ‘establishment’.” Again, undermining the authority of the remainder of the faculty and putting them in a bad light by comparison in the students’ eyes.
 
I’m pretty sure from reading the story in the other thread what he posted went against his contract at the school. He knew it did, but posted it anyway, and now he’s paying the consequences.

James, he was offered the opportunity to recant his statements and he refused, saying that he would be lying and would no longer be able to look his students in the eyes.
 
I have come across Catholics who think the same way, are we wired differently? Did he get this teaching per some institution? I know he speaks to where he went to college, if he is in Ohio and he says he went to 3 different Catholic Universities, wonder if he went to Franciscan U. in Steubenville who have a forthright curriculum. There are schools of thought but I think his dissent is against the clear teaching of the church, so it should be kept to oneself. I mean, we are in the day of that newspaper website who the Church has said does not speak for Catholicism and we are in the day where the pro-life display at DePaul University was vandalized. I would be curious as to some of Mr. Moroski’s other views.

Going back a few pages on his short blog, he does NOT seem to tackle issues paramount in the Church it seems.
 
Interesting responses so far, thank you for sharing your opinions. Frankly, I do believe he should be gone from the school because in a public way he said that he does not believe in what the Church says we should believe. He is teaching these kids who are being sent to a Catholic school for a Catholic education that what they are teaching is something he doesn’t hold true. Teachers and administration at Catholic schools have some extra expectations for their professional demeanor and they know that going in to the position.
 
I read the entry and could not see that he made a coherent argument in support of his belief. He really only said that he “unabashedly” supports homosexual lifestyles and further insinuated that his friend is somehow abusive for maintaining a traditional belief. Since he did not even summarize his friend’s argument (he only cited the conclusion), there is not enough evidence to support the insinuation.

The Supreme Court recently affirmed a religious school’s right to have staff who are appropriate.

Hmm… I’m not sure whether that case is relevant. It centered around whether the teacher was a lay minister, and thus make the school eligible for a ministerial exemption to antidiscrimination laws. That doesn’t seem to be at issue in the Moroski case. I doubt the archdiocese is going to claim that he is clergy.

The Moroski case seems to be a straight-forward case of breach of contract. We had a similar case here in Iowa, a couple years ago, when a Catholic high school fired a teacher because she posted on Facebook and at an atheist website that she had doubts about God’s existence. This put her in violation of her contract to uphold Catholic teaching.

I can’t speak for this man but I think there are a number of Christians out there who see a sort of “Social Justice” agenda.

The way much of the Mainstream Media and the propaganda for same sex attraction marriages go, you would think we are in the days of Jim Crow, that people are being oppressed and told to sit in the back of the bus and not given the right to vote. This is exactly what same sex attraction proponents try to push and many of the young are gullible to this. They really think this is a modern day Civil Rights Crusade. I differ.
