How do you get past what your family really is like, rather than what you’d like it to be? Especially for those of us like me, where it’s not bad enough to be abusive yet it seems like you can never have a real relationship with your parents. How do you get to the point where they can’t keep hurting you?
My mother has always been extremely critical and controlling, even manipulative. She’s also pretty stubborn about insisting there’s nothing wrong with what she’s doing. It’s almost comical sometimes what she seems to end up hearing versus what I actually said. At this point even her compliments and concerns are critical. Yet I find myself still terrified of her temper and deeply hurt by her criticisms, even though I know they’re silly and that she can’t actually do anything to me.
