No its not. How is something existing considered supernatural?

Thats like saying the existence of rocks, or water or humans or animals are supernatural.

You can think they came from something supernatural, but science can prove you wrong. Well, at least mostly. True we don’t know everything, but we’re learning.
I think you have missed the point. “Being” is its own entity.

Yes, and that was just one of my experiences. I know this atheist person has a hard time believing something they have closed their mind to, but maybe someday they will be open to accepting that they don’t know everything, and shouldn’t say its impossible.
I at one time was an atheist. I thought of myself as a freethinking person, thought all things were possible, and was open to any argument. As I would dive into Philosophy, Cosmology, Linguistics and a host of other things I found interesting. I found that I was open to anything, but the supernatural. I presupposed it did not exist. A friend pointed out to me, that it is not very liberal minded to do such a thing. He pointed out that all of my presuppositional beliefs were limiting me to my already preconceived notion of existence. I had to examine myself, and I determined that he was right. From logic, reason, Mathematics, morality everything I believed was a presupposition that there was no God. From that notion I was defining all things. So I thought, what if I had the presupposition of God does exist vs God does not exist? What** IF.** What would that look like through a different lens. I found that IF there was a God, in light of all the information that I have, the best explanation of existence, posited the transcendent. That still left me far from being Christian, and thought that it was very presumptuous of people to claim, their God was the One True God. Certain religions explain the human condition, existence, the universe, and natural world better than others, but I thought it would be impossible to know God. I went from deist to theist to Christian all on the notion of love. I feel that the Christian religion is the only religion that can lay claim to defining love. God IS Love. The trinitarian claim is expressed in that one simple phrase. God IS love, in His very being, there is a Lover, a Beloved, and through the Love expressed between the Lover and Beloved proceeds forth Love. You have Father, Son and Holy Spirit expressed so simply and beautifully in that one expression God IS love. To be honest I felt loved, overwhelmingly, and knew that Love was not just an action or a feeling but God Himself. I experienced the Numinous through Love and that Love was God, Father Son and Holy Spirit. So I didn’t just understand concepts anymore about Deism or Theism, but I knew that Love was the ground of all existence and God IS love. Pope Benedict XVI said something along the lines of When you recognize something, you are in fact RE-COGNIZING, you are thinking again, that which was already thought into existence. I spent a lot of time trying to define love, turns out that Love has been defining me all along!

Was I convinced He never existed prior to conversion? No, just a most likely there is no God and my disbelief grew.
So am I sure God exist? Yes, convinced on so many levels.

Peace and Love in Christ

What about people like me? I never used logic to rule-out the possibility of God - I just neither feel nor sense nor see him. If he exists, he is as present in my life (in any way I can experience) as a rock on top of a mountain.
I know how you feel, I was an agnostic at one point, I still am at times.

I firmly believe God exists for several reasons, on several levels.

One, consider that many folks throughout history have experienced the supernatural. Thes folks were saints… literally people with impeccable reputations, who lived upright lives and had no reason to lie or make up stories. Many of these people performed miracles that could only be explained as having come from God.

Two, I have personally heard several stories of folks who experienced NDE, one was from a co-worker whose brother had such an experience in a hospital. Another was from a friend whose son touched a high voltage line. And a third was from a fellow PGK (past grand knight) who was visiting a dying friend in the hospital who was visited by another PGK who had passed away the year before. There was absolutely no reason for any of these folks to lie. I trust each of them as very sincere and honest folks.

Three, when considering the vastness of the universe, and the incredible almost infinite amount of energy needed to create the universe at the very first instance of the big bang, what entity could possibly have enough power to generate such energy ??? Only God could do such a thing. Consider there are BILLIONS of galaxies, and each galaxy has billions of stars, and after 13 or 14 billion years the galaxies are still flying away at an accelerated pace. This is NOT some random event… IF it were, then WHY has another such event not happened after billions of years ???

Yes, I believe God exists, and I would say I am about 100% certain. There is far more evidence that God exists than there is evidence for most convictions of most crimes. How many cases have hundreds or thousands of saints testifying for the facts ? There have been thousands of miracles documented thoroughout history verifying the God’s goodness and existence. People just choose to ignore or discount a ton of evidence. God literally needs to shock them with a personal experience and even then they would probably chalk it up to a hallucination.

On a very personal level, I am constantly amazed at how God makes coincidence and improbable things happen all the time.

Just when I think something could not possibly happen such as at a sporting event or while gambling, it does. Sometimes it gets really humorous, because I think or say to myself, such and such could not possibly occur and sure enough it does.

It’s as if God knows what I am thinking, and makes the unreal occur just to amuse me (or to spite me).

  1. Why do I believe in God?
    a) I don’t think we are an accident. Our existence, together with the universe we reside in is just way too complex to be the result of mere chance.
b) Church history. Reading the lives of several Christian saints, their deeds, miracles and deep faith in God have become testimonies that I have found very convincing. If one would read an ounce of Joan of Arc, Bernadette Soubirous or the late Pope John Paul II (some examples), you’d find a lot of things that lead to God. You look at the Church’s history of miracles - Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, etc and you’ll find enough information to leave pondering for a long long time…

Atheists view our saints as crazy individuals who suffer from hallucinations or attention seeking lowlives…and our miracles as the result of mere chance or frauds put together by the church. If thats the case, then Catholics must be a religion of scheming idiots right?..I mean no other religious group can match up to such a grand resume as our Church.

Also, I don’t see how a church that has survived so many persecutions can be considered man-made. I studied church history, I know our beliefs and I’ve seen enough in this world to convince me that God exists. - High school student 🙂
  1. Really confident. 95% ish.

👍 An excellent post which promises well for your future! 🙂

To preface, this is not a thread about atheism. If it becomes a thread about atheism, I request that the moderators remove it immediately. Also, I do not want there to be debates. I simply want to ask questions, to find out why Catholics believe God exists. It will just be my honest questions, honest questions from others, and Catholic answers.

No fighting. No atheism. No evolution.

Here is the first question:

How do you know God exists?

How confident are you that God exists?
👍

Jesus’ answer to your questions is in His address to Peter, in Matthew 16:7.

Knowledge of God’s existence is only through revelation.

Revelation by God - not by any man-constructed conduits [ideas, reasoning, inspirations, etc.] - though God may choose such constructs, for the purpose of revealing His existence to you.

If it be revealed to you, you are blessed; if not, then not.

🙂

“Life is not a simple product of laws and the randomness of matter, but within everything and at the same time above everything, there is a personal will, there is a Spirit who in Jesus has revealed himself as Love.”

–Pope Benedict XVI (Encyclical on Hope)

“We believe in God. This is a fundamental decision on our part. But again the question has to be asked: is this still possible today? Is it reasonable? From the Enlightenment on, science, at least in part, has applied itself to seeking an explanation of the world in which God would be unnecessary. And if this were so, he would also become unnecessary in our lives. But whenever the attempt seemed to be nearing success - inevitably it would become clear: something is missing from the equation! When God is subtracted, something doesn’t add up for man, the world, the whole universe. So we end up with two alternatives. What came first? Creative Reason, the Creator Spirit who makes all things and gives them growth, or Unreason, which, lacking any meaning, yet somehow brings forth a mathematically ordered cosmos, as well as man and his reason. The latter, however, would then be nothing more than a chance result of evolution and thus, in the end, equally meaningless. As Christians, we say: “I believe in God the Father, the Creator of heaven and earth” -I believe in the Creator Spirit. We believe that at the beginning of everything is the eternal Word, with Reason and not Unreason.”

– Pope Benedict XVI (12 Sept 2006 Homily in Regensburg)

I feel that every human being knows that someone or something greater than them exists. Its not so clear what or who it is. But we all know.

Then we can look to see if there is any reasonable way to find out who or what this is. It is in this search that I heard about a person called Jesus. Apparently this person died and rose from the dead. Seemed to me like, if he did indeed die and rise from the dead, this is the person that would be reasonable to listen to. He seemed to have proven his authority.

So I looked for evidence that he did indeed rise from the dead and all this was no fabrication. Some historical texts after, the thing that made me realize this person must indeed have risen from the dead was the existence of his Apostolic successors today. It meant that there were people after his death, who were willing to give their lives for the belief that this person rose from the dead. If it was up to me to find out if these men who called themselves Apostles were lying, I would have tortured them myself and put a couple to death to figure out if others would still be willing to testify for a lie. But someone else did it, and it seems that they did give witness to the truth fearlessly.

Then I think about whether all these men could have been insane. But it seems highly improbable that every Apostle chosen by a man at a time where Psychology was not developed was mentally insane. That would be a miracle in it-self if he managed to pick that well.

Then I think about whether this whole Jesus was a cult leader. But then it hits me from my knowledge in psychology that any cult, after the death of a cult leader just fades away. Followers are only willing to give their lives when the Cult leader is alive and giving orders. But then this means that the carrying out of orders to preach by the Apostles after the death of Jesus would suggest that this person was truly alive again.

After some more arguments of this sort, it became clear to me that Jesus was the one to listen to. I receive what he taught from his Apostles today in the Catholic Church. I believe in God, the Bible, the Dogmas not because they seem true but because that is what the Apostles teach. I believe in the Apostles because they were given authority by Apostles Jesus himself chose to teach. I believe in Jesus because he proved his authority through the resurrection.

Now of course, after believing in God for so long, a logical argument from someone like St. Thomas Aquinas is also good at reconfirming what I believe to be reasonable. But my faith hinges on the death and resurrection of Jesus! After years of praying and building a relationship with Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Mother and the communion of saints, they are more real to me than most people I know! 🙂

Samuel:

At first I didn’t. In those days, I thought that this reality was the mere result of trillions of chance events. So then I sought evidence, both for chance and for God. Then, one day I realized that, “a very small number of chance events might just make all of this possible, but, trillions of them, or even a smallish trillion: absolutely impossible.” And Revelation took care of the rest. 🙂

I was not 100% sure God existed but a few years ago my cousin was born 3 months premature. He had to have a tracheostomy put in. He became very unwell for a long time but i prayed and now he has had his tracheostomy removed and has started school. and aswell last year my ant had breast cancer and all i did was pray night and day in my schools chapel and now she has had 3 opporations and is cancer free. See this has shown me that God is there for me. He has been watching over me and my family long before i knew him. Our family has defeated so many odds and i know it is him that has done this. And for this I am forever geatful. :amen:

Welcome to the forum, Olivia! It would be good to see your impressive post on the thread **“How often do miracles occur?” 😉

How do you know God exists?
I have examined the evidence and found it appealing. Christianity answer some of life’s most pertinent questions a whole lot better than the various naturalistic world views

Why am I here?

Where am I going?

What is the meaning of life?

What happens to me when I die?

Also in it I find not just my own salvation, but also a hope for the salvation of all of human kind.

Welcome to the forum! A superb post. 👍

I am a former agnostic, if that lends any additional weight to what I am about to say. God is with me everywhere I go. I am not a great Christian, but He is on my mind, conscience, or heart (are those 3 different things?) always. Even when I am not thinking directly about God, or even if my mind is on something it shouldn’t be thinking about (i.e., something sinful or lustful), all things are God-related in some way if you know what I mean. This wasn’t so when I was an agnostic. Unfortunately I have no insights into my thought processes back then as it was so long ago.

#1 Scientifically well documented miracles.

Eucharistic miracle at Lanciano
Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Fatima
Our Lady of Kibeho

#2 The logical consistency of the Catholic faith and lack of long-term consistency in immoral teaching.

#3 The relative existence of good and bad consequences for actions that makes the existence of a Heaven and Hell believable

When I start to doubt, I try to think of an alternative reason why these reasons might exist other than the existence of God. I can’t think of one so I am not wholly able to unbelieve. The greatest questions I have are
  1. How did God come into existence? Why does he need to be benevolent instead of neutral?
  2. Why did God create free will instead of robotic angels and people?

God is metaphysically necessary. He did not come in to existence: he is “the alpha and the omega”, “from eternity to eternity”. All else depends on him, the first cause, prime mover, and pure act.
