I always hear stories here and testimonies where people will talk about how God told them something. Prayer is like talking to a brick wall for me, I don’t get how you differentiate your own thoughts/God’s. Am I missing out on something?

I struggle with the same thing. I don’t think I have ever clearly “heard God’s voice” speaking to me. I sometimes wonder if I am doing something wrong, or not praying enough, or being quiet enough, or doing something wrong.When you pray, how do you know if God is trying to tell you something or if it’s your own thoughts? Sometimes we can miss the forest for the trees; God may be answering through that which seems insignificant in our lives… we miss it because we are expecting grandeur and uncontested “proof.”19:11 Then he was told, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh’. Then Yahweh himself went by. There came a mighty wind, so strong it tore the mountains and shattered the rocks before Yahweh. But Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. When I get good ideas, I chalk it up to the Holy Spirit’s inspiration. When I get bad ideas, I chalk it up to my own error.I don’t get how you differentiate your own thoughts/God’s.
I don’t know. When I pray, I feel calm and sometimes I feel a burning in my chest. Do you? I also feel that, sometimes, when I read holy books like the Bible and the Catechism. And at Mass.Am I missing out on something?
