So for a sin to be mortal it has to be serious matter, full consent, full knowledge so, how do you know if a sin is serious or not?
This is a good guide:So for a sin to be mortal it has to be serious matter, full consent, full knowledge so, how do you know if a sin is serious or not?
We are Told that Loving God with all of our being is the greatest commandment and goal of our existance. So for a sin to be mortal it has to be serious matter, full consent, full knowledge so, how do you know if a sin is serious or not?
you form your conscience in light of God’s universal law summarized in the 10 commandments and with the mind and heart of the Church He established. You make it your business to seek out solid faith formation on matters of conscience and ask your confessor to recommend a source for a good examination of conscience. So for a sin to be mortal it has to be serious matter, full consent, full knowledge so, how do you know if a sin is serious or not?
I cannot recommend this guide in toto…

I agree with you to a certain extent but please remember that, in the Catholic Church there are distinctions made and are addressed in the various documents referenced above. So the question makes perfect sense on a Catholic answer board and within the context of Catholic teaching.Every sin, no matter how you call it (venial/mortal) is a very grave offense to the Lord, because He died for every one of them. You shouldn’t worry which one is as serious sin because all are serious and the price of sin is death, no matter how small it is.
So this question of yours makes no sense.

All sin leads to death, directly of indirectly. Sin is the transgression of the Law, and the Law is love, therefore if something does not come from Love is sin.yes all sin offends God…
We must follow Christ and this involves avoiding sins…
but there is a big difference between stealing a pack of gum and killing ones next door neighbor with a gun.
Even John points out that there are sins that lead to death…and other sin that is NOT deadly …not mortal ( 1 John 5:17)
yes avoid sins…but we can not avoid all venial sins all together (for we are weak and lots of things come at us in life) without a very special grace from God…but certainly avoid all mortal sin!
Of course we should seek to avoid venial sins as well…but it is the case that while we can avoid each venial sin that we are tempted …there will be venial sins in the life of the Christian–which he should repent too of course! All sin leads to death, directly of indirectly. Sin is the transgression of the Law, and the Law is love, therefore if something does not come from Love is sin.
My point is that we shouldn’t be ignorant towards sins that have smaller consequences (of the moment), like stealing a a pack of gum.
To a true Christian all sin is detestable to him, even our own life, if it contains sin. This is why Christ said that if one doesn’t hate his own life He can’t come to Him. He was referring to a life of sin.
We can avoid venial sins, but we won’t because we are weak. We don’t have a strong will. Maybe if people would just see how much Christ suffered because someone decided to lie ‘for fun’ or to steal ‘for fun’ something then perhaps they would be more decided not to sin.
So we should be worried and decided to avoid sin at all cost, even if it is a venial sin. We should avoid a venial sin as much as we would avoid a mortal sin, because Christ died because of both types of sin, and not mortal sins only.
This is why I don’t believe sins are divided in mortal and venial, but I used the Catholic division of sin just to make my point clear: we should avoid ‘venial’ sins just as we would avoid ‘mortal’ sin; we should hate ‘venial’ sins just as we hate ‘mortal’ sins. Even if the consequences differ, they are an abomination. Even if the consequences between killing and telling a lie differ, they are both abominations to the Lord.

The above is a regrettable example of the confusion which exists when there is no infallible authority outside of Christ’s Church. Even many Catholics are confused, unneccesarily. So this question of yours makes no sense.
If you do not repent for all your sins, then you are going to Hell, even if it is a venial sin. All sin leads to death… your death in all the cases and in other to other people’s death. Venial sin means damnation if you do not repent of it.Venial sin does NOT mean damnation, without repentance.
Please reread the Sacred Scripture in post #18. Then look at the foundation of Christ’s Church on Peter the Rock, with His authority to bind and loose.Cristian B
