I’m unsure what the proper way to do this is.

Do you just say “I pray for the Popes intentions”

Or do you say it in a more detailed way by finding out what the intentions actually are from the internet?

And do you say this before or after a hail Mary/Our Father?

Thanks!

At the end of the rosary I say to myself, "For the intentions of our beloved Pope, Francis I.
Then I say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.

My understanding is that when you pray for the intentions of the Holy Father when gaining indulgences, you’re praying for the intentions which are attached to the office of Pope and don’t change with each individual Pope.

The way it is typically done nowadays, based on every prayer group I’ve seen do it including the one led by the Diocese of Philadelphia bishop and archbishop, is you simply say, “I pray for the Holy Father’s intentions” and then recite the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.

The Holy Father’s intentions consist of some basic intentions that always apply regardless of whether there is a Pope occupying the Holy See or not, and then there is a specific monthly intention. The monthly intentions are released as a list at the beginning of each year. The Pope may also add other intentions he deems necessary, for example it’s pretty obvious right now that the Pope’s intentions include the coronavirus intentions mentioned in the Vatican decree, since the Pope has been publicly praying for an end to the epidemic, all over the place.

It is not necessary to look up the specific intentions or mention them by name (the Pope might even keep some of his intentions private), although you can look the monthly intentions up on the web if you want to know what they are.

The prayer includes those general intentions, but when there is a Pope in office and he has released a monthly intention list, it includes the specific monthly intention also. It also would include anything else the Pope happens to be specifically praying for (like right now, end to coronavirus epidemic). If an intention is somehow wrong or goes against Church teaching, then our prayers would not support that intention, as the Pope cannot exhort us to do evil. The OnePeterFive article I posted explains this.

I pray it on every Rosary I pray “for the intentions of the Holy Father”.

Some prayer groups pray the first Our Father after the Creed “for the intentions of the Holy Father”.

However, for indulgence practice, if you are planning to get an indulgence by saying the Rosary, then your prayer for the Holy Father’s intentions is generally expected to be a separate recited prayer, so most groups will say an extra Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be “for the Holy Father’s intentions” after finishing the Rosary.

If you have done some other plenary indulgenced work already (such as receiving the Pope’s Urbi et Orbi blessing, etc) and you’re just praying an extra Rosary, it’s fine to add an intention “for the intentions of the Holy Father” and use the Rosary for that purpose, but you must recite the prayers (out loud unless one is mute, per the manual). Details, details.

My standard for indulgences is reading Scripture. Not flashy, I know, but Rosary is usually something I just do over and over in my head all day. The Pope’s blessings, I’ve been watching more as a technician than devotionally, it is my job to get these things to our parishioners over electronic media. In fact, gotta get in place for my second streaming Mass today.

Thank you for helping to bring people the streaming Masses. I’m really enjoying the variety of them that I’m getting to see. Have watched 6 different priests in the last few days.
