How do you pray while in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel?

Hello all,

I am new to Eucharistic Adoration and I typically pray the rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I also say my own prayers followed by scripted prayers like Hail Holy Queen, Litany of the Sacred Heart, etc.

I am curious what you all do while in Eucharistic Adoration. Is there a prescribed prayer format?

There is no prescribed format whatsoever. I simply bask in His presence, praise Him( quietly if I’m with others)sing to Him( if alone), read scripture or passages from spiritual books . Next to Mass it’s one of the best places to be!

I do an hour every Thursday from 11:00pm to 12:00am and I usually get there 20 to 15 minutes early:

• Kneel upon entering and silently say a Glory Be.
• Say my personal prayers.
• At the beginning of the hour we all stop and say the Divine Mercy together.
• Start my Rosary and usually do 2 sets of mysteries.
• Sit and try to listen (new exercise for me and finding it challenging to do)
• Stay and say the Divine Mercy at the top of the hour.
• Kneel to leave and thank Jesus for that hour.

But you know what I find interesting. You first mention kneeling and that has been my experience. From my observations everyone that enters the Adoration Chapel either kneels or lays prostrate. Yet there are clergy that command one receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity standing and laity who will only receive Him standing.

I could be mistaken but I believe the clergy should leave it up to the communicate if they kneel, stand, take in the hand or tongue. Literally pages have been filled with this discussion on this forum but my opinion is simply: one should take communion how one is led to do so as long as the church accepts the practice and it isn’t done to cause distraction or takes away focus on Christ. Personally I bow then take in my hand but rejoice for all who are in good grace and can partake.

Now communion and adoration are two different things. My experience during adoration is that all kneel when coming into the real presence.

There are no prescribed prayers in private EA. I’m never sure what I’ll be doing in EA so I always bring my EA bag with me so I’m prepared for whatever the Spirit calls me to do/pray.

Often I’ll sing if I’m alone in the chapel.

Often I’ll work on a knit or crochet baby blanket which will be donated to a child who is baptized in our parish. I kinda stitch my prayers into the fabric.

At other times I’ll read spiritual books or scripture, pausing to meditate on passages that speak to me. Or maybe I’ll pray the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, or some other chaplet.

See, no rules…just remain quiet if someone else is also in the chapel.

The two most powerful prayer experiences I have ever had before our Lord involved no words at all. One was silent and the other was in tears. Verbal prayers are wonderful, but there are times when only silence allows us to hear the Lord speak to our hearts.

As others have said in previous responses, there is no prescribed approach to praying before the Blessed Sacrament during silent Adoration. My own approach depends principally upon three considerations: how long I intend to adore, where we are in the liturgical calendar, and what else is going on in my life at the time.

I may pray the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the relevant Hour(s) of the LOTH, the Chaplet of St. Michael, the Way of the Cross…if I’m in mid-novena, I may pray that day’s prayers during Adoration. Scripture reading and meditation are also possibilities, as are spiritual reading and journaling. When time is a factor, I might select a few of these options. Or I might do none of them and simply sit in contemplation of the Lord for the duration of my time before Him.

In all instances, I end my time with Jesus in 15 minutes of silence, just in case He has something to tell me.
