hinking of pronunciations, I ordered an icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel once from a Carmelite community. I pronounced it car-MEL, like we do the city here in California, but the fellow on the other end of the phone corrected me, “It’s pronounced CAR-mel,” he said, which is how we pronounce the gooey candy confection.
I had a very good friend - a Sister of Mercy - her name was Carmel Fennessy. For the thirty or so years of our friendship she was a ‘car-MEL!’ She never once complained 😀

I rest my case 😄

When I was travelling O/S at one stage and was asked which country I was from ,I had trouble trying to confirm I was from Australia…
"Ohh,Austria "
"No Ustralya "
“Austria”
"No ,sorry,Usstraylya "
“Austria”
(Silent ‘Arrgh!’ from me…)

Sounds like they thought Austria and Australia are the same country. A Belgian friend once told me he’d met people who think Belgium and Bulgaria are the same country

They were European and knew that Australia and Austria were different but just couldn’t differentiate with my accent 🙂

Now, the question of herbs…
Erbs …or Herbs?
We usually pronounce it Herbs here .🌿

Everyone knows the ‘h’ in herb is silent, unless you’re talking about Peaches and Herb

The Houghton Mifflin American Heritage Dictionary gives both pronunciations, but “ûrb” comes first and “hûrb” second.

How about the name Maurice? In Britain “Morris” and “Maurice” are pronounced identically.
