Karen, I was bombarded two years ago in a spas tub at a sports club I belong to . We agreed on politics but when they found out I was a catholic World War 3 occured right in the tub.Two of them were preachers the other was a black preacher who called himself a Bishop.I too live in the South. At that point I only knew history about the faith but no scripture .I held my own but would have done so much better if I knew then what I know today .They are probably telling you we are idolotrists well explain to them that the Hail Mary prayer came from Luke chapter 1 started by the angle Gabrial "hail favored one the lord is with you"and then Elizabeth (cousin of Mary)"Blessid is the fruit of your womb "tell them its honor not worship .In the prayer we ask them to pray for us sinners .How could we worship her if were asking her to pray for us .now they might say that she can’t intercede you remind them of the Wedding feast at Cana when Jesus truned the water into wine .Mary interceded to Jesus for the wedding guests .Now tell them that they need to read John 6 if they mock the transubstantiation .6:55 my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. You can get a Bible and start by reading teh Gospel accounts and then the epistles and Acts .It has taken my a while but with my Bible i can debate anyone and those woman would be wantin g to convert after I finshed talking to them over time .Keep your head up your in the right place . God Bless , Frankie

Last evening I was able to distract an intervention “to save me from the bonds of the RCC”, quite frankly I was shocked that this was even happening, I’ve heard about these, but this time it was me in the center. I was being bombarded with questions and for every answer, they had theirs, as if they knew what I would say.

Two co-workers, kindly and gently with tears in their eyes, tried to convince me that by staying in the RCC, I can not be saved. Needless to say, I was and still am a bit tongue tied. Luckly something came up at work and we had to attend to that, then our shift was over, and I just said a fast goodbye, clocked out and left. But I work with these 2 next week again.

Seriously, how does one handle this? I am new to the South (around 3 years) and just began back out into the work force this past Spring. I am the only Catholic. I don’t want to allienate people but I refuse to deny The Catholic Church. This never happened to me up North.

If they were nasty, it would have been easier, but what they said was done so kindly that I was dumbfounded. Help please.
Maybe the rules are different in the South, but where I come from the workplace is reserved for…work. If people are not consentrating on the task at hand, I show them the door, tears or no tears. You might want to talk to your supervisor about this and inform him/her that religious harasment (yes, thats what it is) is something most companies frown upon.
Dont be fooled by the croc tears. If they want to prosletyze, do it off company time.

If you want to make their heads spin around, when they accuse the Church of the usual, just say something like, “Well, you know, when I converted I was really hoping so, but I can’t find that loose woman anywhere - everyone I meet is either faithfully married, or celibate! Man, what a disappointment!” 😃 😛
WOW I love it LOL

I live in the south and I never had this happen to me. But then again, I live in Cajun Country. Cajuns are historically Catholic.

If you really want to start a buzz, tell them you’re in the Druid sect of the Catholic Church.

“Oh, you’ve never heard of us?” LOL

But seriously, tell them that you’re in the process of being saved, thank you very much, and that you consider your personal relationship with Jesus a personal thing at this point in your journey. They might get that. 🤷

One of the guests recently on The Journey Home said that if he is asked if he is “saved” his answer is, “I was saved, I continue to be saved, and by the grace of God I will be saved”. I like the way he put it. 🙂

Be not afraid…you’re family (RCC) is praying for you.

Pax†

And at The Last Supper, Jesus had what in The Cup? Grape kool-aid?
sounds like they change Scriptures to suit their beliefs.

They actually think it was raw grape juice, or “unfermented wine”. (In those days, pre-Pasteurization, such a thing would have probably killed them, with the amount of germs and fungi. The reason they fermented the grapes back in those days was to make them edible.)

Yep.

I would suggest going to ScriptureCatholic.com and writing down a few verses that you can bring up if they try to convert you again. Ignorance of scriptures is ignorance of Christ, as St. Jerome said.

Also, pray. Apologetics is a matter of God, so ask God to assist you. 🙂

What can you expect from people who truly believe that unless you change your beliefs, you ARE going to hell? If you are certain that someone is about to step off a cliff to their deaths, wouldn’t you try to stop them from taking that step, or to pull them away from the edge?

When someone comes to you with that motive, and treats you in a loving manner, all you can do is to be kind back. The problem is, most people who think you are going to hell aren’t interested in pulling you back from the edge. Mostly they behave quite differently: they point out the cliff, the fall–then push you and cheer as they watch you tumble to the rocks. They would, I honestly believe, feel somewhat annoyed if you actually paid attention and stepped back…rather like Jonah felt when Nineveh repented. 😉

I honor those who are honest in their wish to save me. The problem, as I have just mentioned, is that the vast majority of those who SAY they want to save me really don’t. They really want to wave the pom poms and shout ‘go to hell’ in unison.

Ah, well. It is what it is.

Great suggestion! One doesn’t neet much more than that!

May God Bless you.

You’ve got that right! I once encountered a Baptist woman who was sincerely convinced that the numbering of the Ten Commandments is given in the Bible.

The Bible itself doesn’t even explicitly indicate that there are ten, but she swore up and down that the numbers were actually in the text itself, and that to change the numbering around, as she accused Catholics of doing, was to alter the Word of God.

Yeast is the naturally occuring fungus on grapes, that causes fermentation.

The ten commandments are given in Exodus chapter 20. Somewhere beyond there in Exodus it is said that God spoke ten words to all of Israel. The hebrew word was dawbar which is a word that represents order, or an ordering.

However, exactly how the ten are divided is only known through the continuous tradition of Judiaism.

There is also a listing of them given somewhere in Deuteronomy that corresponds more closely to the version we give to children in Catechism classes.

I had a JW do the some thing with me one time years ago,in fact she come to the house 2 time to tell me I was wrong

Most people, including my family, dread when the Jehovah’s Witnesses visit.

I, on the other hand, get giddy and fetch my Bible. Well, I would, if they didn’t purposefully visit when I wasn’t available; I guess they know I’m a theology major. 😛

These folks did mean well because , from what they have been taught, you are in the Mystery Whore of bablyon, the pope is either anti-christ or the false prophet, you worship a cookie god and get drunk on wine each Sunday, and you embrace all things pagan and talk to the dead.

No wonder they cried.

There is no way you will ever be able to justify your catholic faith to them. And you should not have to. All that will only leave you feeling depressed and lonely, when faith in Christ should be about joy.

I would tell them that it pleases you that they are worried about your soul, but, thank them and tell them your soul is doing quite well in the loving hands of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

If they start bring up the above mentioned nasties, give them a catachism to read and then make judgements. With a smile on your face. Offer them to attend a Mass, which they probabply never set foot insde a catholic church before.

If it gets ugly, I would point blank tell them why they think Jesus would approve of their stealing your joy in Him from you.
