How does one become righteous?

I believe we are not righteous unless we do righteousness. What says you?

“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” Isaiah 64:6

Thanks and looking forward to our conversation

Psalm 51:1-2 - O God, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. This cleansing requires an inner change of heart. Many Protestants believe that we are so depraved that God only covers our sins up by declaring us righteous (imputing Christ’s righteousness to us). The Catholic (and Scriptural view), however, is that God is powerful enough to blot out our sins and remove them. The view that God just declares us righteous by “covering us up,” denigrates the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, who continues the work of Christ through His work of justification and sanctification (infusing His grace into souls and changing the inner person).
2 Cor. 5:17 - Paul says that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. He is not just the old creation that is covered up. The old has passed away, and behold, the new has come.
Psalm 51:10 - create in me a clean heart, oh God, and put a new and right spirit within me (not “cover” me). God is so powerful that He brings about a real metamorphosis in ourselves.
Ezek. 36:26-27 - a new heart I will give you and a new spirit I will put within you. These are interior changes effected by God.
Matt. 5:20; Luke 1:6; Acts 10:35 - here are more examples of “doing” righteousness, not just being “imputed” external righteousness. We are not just defendants in a courtroom who have been exonerated. We are children of God endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit by whose grace we can become righteous.

Matt. 6:1 - beware of practicing righteousness before men. We are not just declared righteous; we can practice righteousness as well.

Luke 11:39-40 - the Pharisees cleansed the outside of the cup but inside they were full of wickedness. God demands an internal change and gives us the grace to make that change.

We become righteous (justified) by Jesus Christ. By grace through Faith and Baptism.

Then his grace we remain in him and live by charity…walking in the Spirit…walking in love…following him and thus becoming more like him…

Yes thanks I left one very important thing out “by his GRACE!”

Matthew 9:3…I desire compassion, and not sacrifice, for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Matthew 6:1…Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them, otherwise you have no reward with your father who is heaven.

Matthew 15:8-9 (Caution for religions) - This people honors me with their lips but their heart is far away from me, but in vain do the worship me teaching as doctrines the precepts of man.

Matthew 13:17…many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

“It is dangerous to speak of God, even when what you say is true…false things said about God are dangerous, but so too are the true, if said when the time is not right.”

I agree what is the issue? None of the verses suggest one can not be righteous

The question itself presupposes a righteous response - it cannot be answered without assuming a righteous position.

I’m sorry can you clarify?
rephrasing my previous response…any response to your original question is itself a righteous response and should not be offered lest you (or others) be led astray.

It depends on the meaning of Righteous.

Personally, committing a crime in anyway makes you not righteous.

Stepping beyond your boundaries makes you unjust and unrighteous IE: Believing things do not apply to you under certain circumstances. Meaning, it doesn’t matter what you believe or who told you it is right. If you do something such as kill, or harm, or unleash suffering, knowingly then you are unrighteous.

My personal definition of righteous: To know at all times what is right and what is wrong. To do things that are right and just as you see them, no matter the situation.

Although there is a very fine line to the righteousness spoken in some nations, religion, or groups.

We are not righteous unless we do the works of God and do them for Christ’s sake. There is no legal sleight of hand where God all of a sudden does not see us as we really are. He sees us and knows us and all of our sins better than we do.

Yours in Christ
Joe

Bookcat said it well. Righteousness is a New Covenant gift given at Baptism and received by faith. Our relationship is restored with God as an adopted son or daughter. This gift can increase through love and obedience to God’s covenant Law.

**For if, by the transgression of one person, death came to reign through that one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of justification come to reign in life through the one person Jesus Christ. (Rom 5:7)

He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. (1 Pet 2:24)

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. (Mt 5:6)

But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. (Mt 6:33)

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Rom 6:16)

Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous. (1 Jn 3:7)**
