If many countries begin by war, how does one discern a just government?
Using Missouri and Iowa as a metaphor, if the people of Iowa move to Missouri and take over the country, is the new government just?
At times, it seems to be a matter of scale. The apocryphal story of Alexander the Great and the pirate illustrates the point nicely – one guy with a ship is called a pirate, one guy with fleets and armies is called an emperor.
I’d also mention the following – “Those who mean to rule justly still mean to rule. Those who mean to govern wisely still mean to govern.”
Last, if you take a gander at the World Wide War project (
worldwidewarproject.com/main.html), it is clear that most wars are fought because of the ambitions of the ruling class in a nation.
Even shortly after the American Revolution, the new government was acting not unlike the British had a decade before (Shay’s Rebellion).
There is a paradox here, however – even if no formal government existed, we would claim ownership over a piece of land, or even just our own lives, and would insist on regulating the disposal of these. In essence, kings of ourselves, if nothing else.
Most political unions come about through the use of force, then are maintained with the use of force. Often, that force is directed toward maintaining a certain lifestyle, station, or privilege for the ruling class over all others. The question seems to boil down to how much the machinery of government is used to transfer wealth to one group, or if the government tends to simply try to create an environment where there is minimal interference in the lives of people to live as they see fit. Most governments seem to operate on a sliding scale between the two poles.
If anything is considered to be “just,” I think most of us would agree that minimal interference in our lives would the most defining and desirable characteristic of “justness.” Anything else becomes a battle over how to allocate tax money and political favor, simply because there is a larger pot of tax treasure to attract the corrupt and scheming.
