How does one go about joining SSPX?

Should one consult with the existing parish priest first, and then seek counsel from the local SSPX priest? Or vice versa? Should it be brought up in the confessional, or an informal meeting with the existing parish priest?

Why would you want to join the SSPX? Recently, I went through a thing where I thought it might be interesting to join the SSPX and I even contacted them and all that, but in the end, remember that at the moment, they have no Canonical standing within the Church. If you wish to attend SSPX Masses because you desire the TLM, that is fine, but more than that, I would not do. Their Absolutions are to the best of my knowledge, except in grave situations, invalid because they lack Ordinary jurisdiction.

Hi, do you know that SSPX are not in communion with the Church? (at least, not yet.) Which makes them schismatic… (for now… the Vatican is working on bringing them back). SSPX is sadly, disobedient to the Church 😦 (even though I think there are many good things about them otherwise.)

If you want the Latin Mass, why not check out an FSSP parish 🙂 fully Catholic and in good standing with the Church, AND traditional! 👍

Why do you want to join SSPX at all? Is it because of the Latin Mass, because there are parishes that offer it that are in good standing with the Church, and you don’t have to go through any kind of process to go to them.

The SSPX is a priestly society - so ordination is required for mebership. 🙂

It’s not a society “in good standing” in the Church, and one is not allowed to ask for advice on how to sin; that would be immoral. Can you imagine saying, “Father, I want to weaken the grace of faith God has given me - please show me how to do so” ? For that is what one would be asking. Priests are not supposed to help Catholics to sin.

BTW, further to what others have said: that a group offers the pre-Conciliar Mass, is entirely compatible with its being schismatic & heretical. The Christological controversies of the fourth to seventh centuries hardly ever had anything to do with the Liturgy - but this did not thing to whatever to prevent condemnations and accusations on all sides. The Old Catholics after 1870 were condemned despite worshipping God with the same Missal as the Pope who condemned them did. Examples could be multiplied.

Would you do us a favor and edit this paragraph. One could easily mistake what you’ve written and fear to attend any EF Mass. And we all know the EF Mass is entirely legal and valid.

Is it ever licit for one not to honor is father or mother?

What does that have to do with the SSPX? If you want to discuss this question, please start another thread. When things get off-topic they can be edited or removed by the moderators so as not to derail the thread.

It isn’t off topic at all. It revolves around obedience. I ask about joining the SSPX, and people start questioning my motive. They say in so many words that it is disobedient and sinful. I then ask if it is ever licit to not honor your father and mother.

Now answer the question.

Might I inquire what any of this has to do with the topic of liturgy and sacraments and why this wasn’t asked on an SSPX board?

You’re asking the wrong people. SSPXrs generally don’t come to Catholic Answers. The SSPX is in talks with the Vatican to become regularized with the Church. Until the time when that happens (and many, including myself, are praying that it does), obedient Catholics who are drawn to traditional forms are urged to seek out groups in full communion with the Church, such as the FSSP and ICKSP.

The fourth commandment is to honor your father and mother. So you should always do so. Now, honoring them does not necessarily mean obeying them if they order you to sin. If my father tells me to kill someone, and I disobey, that does not mean I am dishonoring my father.

Just show up for mass and when you are ready fill out the paper to get on the chapel register.

There are one or two of us here. As was stated, one does not join the SSPX, except perhaps as a tertiary. You just simply assist at Mass at an SSPX chapel if you choose. There are some SSPX-friendly boards you could check out. PM me if you want the addresses.

Only clerics can be members of the SSPX. If you consider you have a vocation consult your local SSPX priest. If you just want to be a lay supporter, then just attend the Mass. You are still a member of your local parish. The SSPX is in communion with Rome. They are in an irregular situation because the Church is in an irregular situation. We have clergy who teach error everywhere. A disasterous state that arose in the wake of Vatican II. God willing the present talks will help to rectify the errors that have spread so widely in recent times. There has already being a great victory in the area of the liturgy and now we pray for similar victory in the area of doctrine. So many do not know the Tradition Doctrine on Ecumenism, Religious Freedom among others. We trust this to Our Lord and Our Lady. We must defend the Truth no matter what people, even our own, think. We must never cooperate with error.

I was afraid this topic would provoke someone to fire a shot at the Catholic Church. I am somewhat surprised this was done with a poster’s very first post. Just to clarify, the opinion expressed here is from the point of view of the SSPX, not the Catholic Church. The status of the SSPX is a result of actions taken on part of the SSPX leadership. I understand they deemed their actions necessary to their way of thinking, but that does not shift the responisbility for their actions. Even a child can not assert their autonomy then try to shift responsibility.

Also, I resent the absurd, demeaning and insulting statement that we have clergy who teach error everywhere. This is a complete lie. Since it attacks the clergy, I have believe its root is from the Father of all lies. I for one have a parish where error is not taught. Many others here follow good holy priest and live where their clergy do not teach error.

This sort of devisive attack on the Church is the danger of the SSPX. I will encourage the OP to reconsider based on the evidence presented by the above poster.

There are plenty of options for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass that are not in an irregular status with the church. Although the SSPX is in full communion right now, their situation is somewhat complicated. Why not stick to a [insert the proper word here; I’m not sure what noun fits] like the Canons of St. John Cantius, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, or the Fraternal Society of St. Peter, all of which are in a perfectly normal state of relations with the Church?

Not sure about the OP but my answer is:

They are not widely available. FSSP has about 50 locations in the US and ICK has 13. Neither of these groups have masses in my whole state, and the closest driving distance to one would be 5-6 hours 1 way. St John Cantius is 1 parish. According to SSPX website they have 100 chapels in the US. So for many people they are the only option for the TLM.

I’d have hoped that in the 2 years since SP that my diocese would have more than 1 EF mass a month. But it doesn’t and I’m not alone in the lack of access to diocesan EF masses.
