You tell someone that you strive to be a good Catholic by following the teachings of scripture, and then a person attempts to discredit your faith with stuff like this:

How does a person respond to this without sounding like a “Cafeteria Catholic”?

You give them a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and tell them to look it up. We never pretended to be a polling agency, and we still don’t. None of this is about opinion. If they don’t like what the Church teaches, they don’t have to be Catholic and they’ll just have to accept the consequences. It is what it is.

This is exactly why we have the Church and her teaching authority. A Catholic is one who heeds those teachings, allowing her to digest Scripture and Tradition for the very purpose of rightly divining the truths of of our faith. Follow the Church, not yours’ or other human interpretations.

Just say,
“It is not uncommon to be confused about what the church teaches.”
“We’ll discuss it sometime when you have the time.”

Just a quick thought.
