I see. So all Trinitarian Christians believe in the biblical teaching of the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist?
Well I know that there are some Catholics out there that don’t believe in the real presence in the Eucharist, that I as a non-catholic believe more about the presence.

For those Questioning when the Church started referring to itself as Catholic and why…

After the death of Christ, Christians were the ones who evangelized and spread the gospel. Ignatius of Antioch was the first to refer to them as Catholics. What were they called before?

A:
Originally Christians weren’t even called Christians. They were called “disciples” (i.e., “students”) of Jesus of Nazareth. Later, in the city of Antioch, they received the name “Christians” (Acts 11:26). This probably happened in the A.D. 30s. This term spread very quickly—probably to the chagrin of those Jewish individuals who did not wish to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah (Christ).

Ultimately, however, different groups began to break off from the Christian community, falling into either heresy or schism. These groups still wished to represent themselves as Christian—and many of them were, retaining valid baptism and a profession of faith in Christ. Consequently, a new word was needed to distinguish the Christians belonging to the Church that Christ founded from those belonging to the churches that had split off from it.

The term that was picked was kataholos, which means according to the whole or universal in Greek. The thought was apparently that these were Christians who believed and practiced according to what body of Christians as a whole did, in contrast to what some particular group thought or did. Over the course of time, kataholoscame to be represented by the parallel English word “Catholic.”

Ignatius of Antioch did not introduce kataholos. However, his letters contain the earliest known uses of it. It may well have been used in other Christian writings prior to this, but we have simply lost them. It certainly was in general use in speech before this point, because Ignatius writes in such a way that he already expects his readers to know this term and what it means. He also uses the term in more than one of his letters, meaning that he expects people in more than one place to know the term.

This indicates that in his day—at the beginning of the second century (circa A.D. 107)—the term was already in widespread use. For it to be used in such a broad manner, it would have required some time to pass into currency in the Christian community, meaning that the term probably was coined sometime in the second half of the first century. We don’t know who first used it, but it was a suitable description of the Church Christ founded and so was already in general use by the time Ignatius wrote.

Originally the universal church meant all the believers in Jesus Christ. As opposed to the local churches a group of believers that meet at a certain time in a certain place.

At some point Catholic began to be understood as only those believers that submit to the Pope.

Well being a Catholic I can only assume a Protestant might answer, Wisdom, how do you know if Jesus was still walking the earth, that He would not ordain someone in person whom His Spirit has ordained? We only have yours and the CC Church’s word that she has not strayed and that Jesus has not ordained others through the Holy Spirit so the gates of you know what do not in the end prevail. This is why in spite of how hard we try, everyone does not believe exactly the same. Do you see how circular the arguments are? But praise God we have unity in Jesus Lord.
Mark 9
38"Teacher," said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
39"Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40for whoever is not against us is for us. 41I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

Talks about the above verse and how to interprete it compared to the other statement Jesus made:

Matthew 12
30"He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

And on another page talks about:
*The ancient church referred itself as the catholic church; however, after the split between east and west in AD 1054, the term catholic came to refer to only the western part. The modern Catholic Church is the direct continuation of one of the five ancient patriarchates of the ancient catholic Church; the other four patriarchates became what we call the Eastern Orthodox Churches. For that reason, the phrase ‘catholic Church’ in documents written before AD 1054 is often translated ‘universal church.’

The Nicene, Apostles, and Athanasian Creeds were all composed before the split, thus when they speak of the ‘catholic church,’ they are referring to all five patriarchates of the ancient church, not just the patriarchate of Rome and its modern continuation.*

What? GOD gave us each a brain.

It is up to each individual to search for the truth. You look for the fruits, check with scripture- is that minister preaching and living the Gospel of Jesus?

If one person says my church is the only way we have the secrets that no one else has, we have the only answer or all the answers - run!
so, your answer is no. you have no authority to do so. correct?

Wisdom, Matthew 7:20Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.
Matt, the times you dissent from Church teaching , and you have admitted doing so, do you go to your Priest with your differing beliefs for confirmation or to other teaching authority ? Or have you made up your mind to create your own rules to abide by,you seem to prefer to go along with Protestant sentiments in many areas.
Not to offend just curious!;)Carlan

NO, the Holy Bible is our authority, the successor of the Apostles who are the foundation of Jesus’ church.

The Holy Bible is the only concrete visible TRUTH directly from GOD that we can hold in our hands and read.

What I said:

This post has meta-ethical moral relativism all over it.

But the Bible didn’t come directly from God as you suppose.

The Bible came to us in stages:

  1. *]The life and teachings of Jesus who established the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
*]The Sacred Oral Tradition of the apostles of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
*]The Sacred Oral Tradition written down by apotles and apostolic men of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
*]The infallible decree of the Canon of Scripture by the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Jesus established the Catholic Church from which the Bible proceeds. This is a historical fact. You aren’t going to get a pass on historical revisionism simply because you want to be able to justify being outside the Church.

If you are looking for truth, that is something you need to seek out for yourself in Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and life. Read John 14: 15 - 17. You can receive the gift of discernment, but it takes a lot of work and faith.

So the truth can be found by your own personal interpretation of a Catholic book?

If that were true then everyone who read it would come to the same truth. The existence of tens of thousands of Protestant denominations all teaching different things from the Bible unequivocally refutes Sola Scriptura.

Protestants can’t settle issues regarding scripture because they have no authority.

because it is impossible for Jesus to teach His Church one thing and another give a different interpretation. dont put God in the middle of confusion. it is more like man made theology that causes confusion and not God. any way i still say, you are not a Catholic. you speak like a protestant because that is what you are. you can fool others but not me.
Wisdom, I don’t think God is confusing. I’ve tried explaining about people being educated, and about Baptism, Confirmation, people not formally defecting and so forth.

that is true. everyone has the obligation to seek the Truth.

There are rules that must be followed.

You must honestly seek truth with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Christ must be the center of all interpretations.

“interpretation” = arrive at the original meaning the writer intended when he penned the words. History of the time, definitions of words in place of time.

Context of the words, sentences, paragraghs, books and theen the entire Bible must be considered. The Holy Bible does not contradict itself.

Any given passage scripture has only one interpretation, but there can be many ways of applying that verse in our life situations.

Carlan, no of course it is not up to me to create rules. Regardless of where we might go at first, even to our parish priest, in the end I pray each step along my lifelong journey that I am following our highest final teaching authority. And I, when all is said and done, trust Him, Whom all of us who believe in, are united with. Peace and God’s blessings to you as we walk together.

who set the rules? you? how do you figure those rules?

do you go to Bible studies? did you go to Bible studies?

I do believe I wrote “If you are looking for truth, that is something you need to seek out for yourself in Jesus Christ.”
I didn’t write a “Catholic book”.
Jesus will teach and show you truth. Then you will see that the truth is written in the Bible. Truth needs to be experienced, not just read and assumed. If I read a Chilton manuel, does that make me a mechanic?

All practicing catholics seek out truth in Jesus Christ. He shows us the truth. That he does so through his Church on Earth, the Catholic Church, doesn’t make the truth any less valid. The reason there are 30K and counting non-orthodox, non-catholic, sects is that some humans decided that any human can equally access the holy spirit, and equally interpret scripture. This is why the non-catholic/non orthodox christian churches are fracturing and splintering beyond recognition. I do believe all christians will someday be united under the Church Jesus founded, physically. All others will simply cease to exist as they are absorbed, or else fade away as numbers dwindle.
