How does silence sound to you?

I like the silence that you can find sometimes at Adoration, if you happen to be there by yourself or with someone else who is quiet there at that time, like you are.

Sometimes you might just hear the sounds that are there in the church or the chapel that you’re in…

You might hear traffic going past outside, or the sound of the heater/furnace turning on and off, but other than those usual everyday noises, it’s really calm and has such a profound peacefulness that I tend to not feel elsewhere. 🙂

I’ll second that. Last Adoration (Wed. Night/Thurs am) the 2 AM lady didn’t show, so I got a bit over 2 hours alone with Our Lord. That was wonderful.

Many of his day who were drawn to the monsestary, were introverts to begin with…Don’t confuse this with holiness. Jesus was plenty vocal in his time on earth.

Just wondering how you know this about Our Lord? Is it from private revelation? Or are you not really talking about extroverted v. introverted? Or because Scripture gives us His words, you think that means He was talking a lot all the time?

One time I was in Christ Church (Episcopal) in Philadelphia, and it dates back before the Revolutionary War. The walls are so thick you can’t hear the traffic and noise of the city outside. It was built that way on purpose.

If you could go there between tour groups, it would be a good place to meditate 🙂

I like mysteries set in medieval times among the religious, like the Brother Cadfael series, the Priscilla Royal series, and others. I like to imagine what it was like back then, when Cadfael is solving a murder mystery, maybe goes to the local leper hospital, maybe into the town to see the sheriff. Just think, no cars or trucks on the road, no lawn mowers, no electrical appliances in the home that we are so used to hearing. And of course no TV or radio. It must have been a wonderfully quiet world back then. I think maybe that is supposed to be the norm–peace and quiet–and now in our time it is ruined. We don’t even know what silence is. That is why I love Adoration and wish our church had more times for it. I do my scheduled stint and love every minute. It is the quietest time and place in our township. Pindrop quiet. I just love it.

Mine sounds like crickets and a hissing noise. I guess I’m blessed!

I actually had slight tinnitus for thirty odd years then two years ago it suddenly incereased in volume over a week. I have a decibel app which measures sound in decibels. I set my radio to no radio station and turn d up the volume until it matched my tinnitus keep the app three feet away from the radio speaker. It measured 78 decibels if I recall. Sometimes it’s Louder, if I have a cold say, or when I pray actually.

If you repeat what I’d did with the app and a radio you will be able to compare loudness objectively rather than subjectively. Just an idea. Hisssssssssss! Aaah!

Definately supposed to be the norm! God didn’t make anything too loud except the woodpeckers and thunder, the latter was for dramatic effect I think, to keep us on our toes don’t you think? 😲

🤣🤣🤣 That’s probably the only thing that would be louder.

Except maybe the kids playing with woodpeckers in a thunderstorm.

Silence is often used in monasteries and convents, are there many uses for silence in your opinion?
In church .

In appropriate parts of the Liturgy .

I too hear the constant high-pitched whine. I can easily ignore it, and most of the time I am not aware of it. However, any time that I listen for it, I can hear it, no matter what sounds are actually present around me.

Because mine increase dramatically very suddenly my doctor was helpful and suggested an MRI scan. I had one and mentioned afterwards that the noise of the machine was onerous! Anyway I had no tumours so that was good. Then I saw the UKs leading expert in tinnitus and he informed me that it was incurable and welcomed me to the ranks of millions of sufferers in the world.

When I first had it I was convinced that I was going to die, I couldn’t imagine that I was well if I could hear such a thing at such a volume. I must say it initially drove me nuts and I needed a great deal of self control to deal with it.

If you haven’t got tinnitus and you’re reading this please take care about noise levels you subject yourself to, turn the music down, wear ear protectors if appropriate and avoid getting tinnitus like the plague.

Silence sounds like my heart beat in my ears because I have Tinnitus. Haha.
Likewise. And to me silence sounds like a constant high-pitched squeal.
Bless you.

I had squealing in my left ear for about a month. It was brutal. My pulsatile tinnitus is bad enough.

I love silence. We live in a noisy world. The silence is so peaceful, and I feel closer to God when it is quiet.
