He is brand new to the rosary to the point where he is asking “how does this work?” That’s a long way from “aridity”.

You would not teach a child just learning the rosary 5 different ways to say it until they had learned the basic way. Just common sense.

Catholicism has two types of prayer that are mostly unknown in the Protestant world: Meditative and contemplative. The Rosary is primarily contemplative in nature. When first introduced to them, these types of prayer often seem superficial and meaninglessly repetitive. However, in the case of the Rosary, the prayers are there to lend structure, a cadence, to your contemplation of the life of Christ.

However, one need never pray a single Rosary to be a “good Catholic” The Rosary is a private devotion - not mandatory. Yet, tens of millions find great comfort and peace in it. Done poorly, it is essentially meaningless. Yet, done well, it leads to profound insight into Christ and His life.

I live in an apartment building and there is a group hosted where they pray the Rosary every Monday morning. I went with a friend this past Monday because I want to understand the Rosary better. I was welcomed to join them and they gave me one and explained the prayers as I did my best to do them, where I was the only one there who was clueless, and they gave me a few pamphlets to read. One is lending me a book that explains the Catholic church better and I plan on attending weekly. How does it work?

I talked to a Catholic friend of mine about it and she said that it takes time. The prayers are confusing.
It’s designed as a meditation on the mysteries of our faith. 20 mysteries beginning with the first mystery the Annunciation, Jesus will be incarnated (God taking on human flesh) within Mary, who was selected to be His mother, ending with the 20th mystery -----> the Coronation of Mary Queen of Heaven

Inbetween, we meditate (walk through) the story of our Faith.

Having been to the Holy Land in 95, I’ve been to every place described in the Rosary. I can go in my mind immediately to each place of each mystery. It’s fantastic!!! 🙂👍

Do you have any links that would provide more details on that? I’ll ask them as well and I’m sure they’ll be happy to help me understand the prayers!

Thank you for posting this link, @brian_custer. 🙂

I think that this is a really great website!

I already knew about it but it had slipped my mind, so I am glad that you mentioned it, even though I know that you were trying to help the OP.

You also helped me, too! 🙂

God bless you!

Under the headings of learn and pray, all of your answers should be covered. After you have been praying the rosary, you may want to join the Confraternity. It is free, and has been endorsed by several popes going back a couple of hundred years. There are special graces attached to the confraternity and they will send you a nice quarterly pamphlet that will teach you more about the rosary.

Lets Pray Not Just Say The Rosary is the pamphlet I used to learn how to pray the rosary. It is $2.50 on Amazon Prime and $0.99 on Kindle. It gives you an explanation of each mystery and a line to contemplate for each Hail Mary. This booklet rocks!

As you become more advanced, you might consider

Champions of the rosary is a book you might want after a year of praying the rosary regularly.

The Servite order has a great minibook on the Servite Rosary. I’d imagine the Franciscans have something similar for the Franciscan Crown Rosary. I learned the Franciscan rosary from a Google search.

Good Luck! As you begin to pray the rosary regularly, don’t be too surprised when graces begin to appear in your life.
