…nothing out of the ordinary… Priest and servers walk out and the crowd stands… nothing new under the sun…

…thank God…👍

Thank God above that you have not had the priest who starts the mass by saying, “Hey, can’t you just feel the spirit going through this community gathered? Hey, turn to the people around you and introduce yourselves! Tell them who you are and what you do and just how much you love the Lord!”

 😦 :nope: :tsktsk:

Oh! I had that one! I just folded my arms and stood there looking directly at him with a very serious look on my face. He stopped doing that after just a few weekends!

I wish priests would not try to jolly us! Just follow what is in the Sacramentary. Use the ceremonies and the words that the Church has laid down, and stop trying to “improve” the Mass.

I never answer the priests who say “Good morning” - as far as I am concerned, I didn’t come to Mass for banal conversation, I came to worship God in the way He has chosen, through His Church. I’ll exchange greetings with the priest after Mass, on the way out.

How nice! You sound like fun. 👍

Oh I would just throw up.

Pariah Pirana:
Keep in mind that while opening the Mass with “In the name of the Father, Son…” is most certainly a requirement, the GIRM DOES allow for an annoucement before the penetential rite begins.

I think it’s VERY appropriate for a celebrant to insert a sober yet warm welcome to all at that point, and the Church sees no problem with that. Our priests typically say something like:

“Good morning everyone, particularly to those who may be visiting our parish this beautiful morning. This is the sixth week of Easter. As we prepare…” (We get a lot of tourists.) This greeting is done in a very classy and appropriate manner.
This type of announcement is made by our cantor before Mass. She then asks everyone to spend some time in silence to prepare themselves for the Mass - an indication to you all about how much everyone talks before Mass in our church that we have to be told to be silent for a few seconds. After the announcement our priest processes in, makes the sign of the cross and gets going!

That would be the quickest way to end liturgical abuse. If we all vomited everytime we witnessed one, I betcha they’d stop. 👍

He kneels before the altar in a cope and says outloud “Vidi aquam” or “Asperges me” (depending on the liturgical time) as he blesses the church and people sing. After the asperges, of coarse +In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritu Sancti. Amen…etc

This is how it is at our church. The Cantor doesn’t announce a moment of silence (you can hear a pin drop) but rather, cell phones off, no flash pictures, and the Latin in on the sheets in the pews.

4 chimes and Father comes out.

What? You mean you don’t have children running in and out of the pews going to the bathroom before Mass (and especially* during* Mass (the consecration!)), using the doors by the SANCTUARY instead of the ones at the back of the church because they are closer to the bathroom, and not genuflecting in front of the tabernacle?

But, we do have chimes thank goodness! Those musical toys and cell phone rings that go off at all times during Mass. If they could only be timed to the consecration I’d be in heaven!

Nope, we left the “Happy Catholic” parish and are now proudly “Deep Catholic”.

Musical TOYS!!! God Help You.
BTW, I have 7&5 year olds. They go potty before Holy Mass and do not EVER go during. That is one of my biggest pet peeves for any child over potty training age!

Same here - my kids know better too. They also know to genuflect in front of the tabernacle even though most people don’t, and, I know this is strange so don’t think I’m odd… but I also taught them to kneel down and pray when they get in the pew. Actually, many people still do this in our church but I do notice some people are beginning to not do it, and they get right down to socializing. It worries me.

We were in church last week and the family in front of us had 4 kids. During the Mass, each one (ages 5 through about 10, so well beyond potty training) went out the doors by the sanctuary to go to the bathroom or get a drink. The younger child went out 3 times!

I’m going to go to my first Latin Mass next month - I found one about an hour away. I can’t wait.

God Bless YOU! And your children. Genuflecting and Praying Before Holy Mass! What a great Catholic Mom you are!

I don’t know that my girls are ready for the TLM, but they can sit through the Rosary before Holy Mass, all of Holy Mass and Choir practice after. NEVER with a toy, run to the bathroom or drink.

Augh! You actually had me going there for a minute! I was thinking that maybe I do want to find a job in Orlando when I graduate next year. Unfortunately, I can’t bring myself to attend anything from SSPX. :nope:

Guess I’ll just stick to Gatorville and the parish I’m in. It’s gotten a lot better, we seem to have a holy priest who wants us to be more Catholic.

Our previous priest was one of those “let’s all greet each other” and have a gladhand session before mass.

I guess I’m a bit surprised by the responses to this poll.

The parish in which I am enrolled has a wonderful pastor. Not all would agree as to his total orthodoxy, but I can hear as he ages --we are about the same age – that he is valiantly attempting to regain control of his 8000 member parish. That is not an easy task.

I think he starts the Mass out wonderfully. After a “Good Morning”, he delivers a two or three minute “sermonette” recapping the main message from the Gospel for the day. If I have not read it ahead of time, I find it great and when we get to that part of the Mass, it is easier for me to follow the reading. And if I have read it, then I am all that much better prepared.

Then he conventually begins the Mass. The whole Archdiocese was told to bring the liturgy into conformance with the GIRM a couple of years ago and we have pretty much done that (although we do stand during the Communion prayers). (Don’t ask).

I have recently been attending daily Mass at a smaller parish close to where I live. The pastor has been starting each Mass with “Happy Easter”, reminding us that we are still in the Easter season. I think that is very nice. I’m lookng forward to this coming Monday to see if he will have a special greeting for us 30 or 40 stalwarts.

In this 30 minute Mass, he gives a very good sermon on the day’s Gospel. We need more of this as a Church. I rarely hear the Gospel mentioned on a Sunday.

He preceeds it with the Asperges - but that is because I attend a Tridentine Mass.
