How Important is Catholic Radio?

With our current anti-Christian culture, Catholic radio is vital to be a sign of truth for the world, to provide a source of good moral example to a culture of hedonism and death, to inspire Christians in their daily struggles and persecutions.
 
This IS a perspective from me and my opinion.

I Before I found Internet broadcasts of ESTN Radio, I used to listen to Christian ‘Protestant’ Music Stations : i.e. ‘The Fish’ affiliates.
I liked the music but somehow I felt I was being ‘sucked in’ to the Protestant way of thinking. Once I found some Catholic Music sites on the Interent, my thinking became clearer. (I have YET to hear a Catholic artist on ‘Christian Radio’. Sounds VERY ironic to me…I guess it goes back that our ‘half brothers and sisters’ do not see US as Christians.

Overall, I am not sure if the music liscensing gets in the way, but I think there should be MORE Catholic MUSIC stations IN ADDITION to the regular broadcasting Catholic Radio has already.

IS Catholic MUSIC important enough to have More Catholuc Music stations too? Your thoughts?

I agree that it would be worthwhile to have some sort of Catholic music programming. I’m not sure how that would play out practically, however. Obviously, you are getting into a matter of cost with royalities and all - even if you go pretty bare bones and take away the salaries of live hosting in favor of a more automated system.

But, then, one must ask, “What will be so unique about a ‘Catholic’ music station?” Is there enough “Catholic” music out there to even support a playlist? Would all of the music necessarily be Catholic or by Catholic artists? Would it also incorporate much of the Christian music which could be heard elsewhere? Would there be any songs or Christian artists excluded due to their message or stance on Catholicism? Who would listen? Could you build up enough audience to support the format? How would it be effectively financed? It would become a challenging leap to take, then.

I do think that there is at least some room for incorporating more music into the overall format of a Catholic station, however. Maybe mix in some songs as part of a morning show. Perhaps offer an extended daily music program for a couple to a few hours nightly. What about a regular “Soundstage” type show which could be done before a live audience? Baby steps are possible if one is creative and dedicated (and can find financing).
 
Catholic radio is important for me and my family.

I live in Indianapolis and we’ve had Catholic radio for a little over a year. It is a way for us to have access to Catholic Answers Live and other EWTN broadcasts without having cable or a satellite dish.

My family is trying to live as frugally as possible (I work for the Church and support my family on that income alone) and so those luxuries just aren’t possible.

In any case, we try to watch as little TV as possible (our only one is in the basement). Catholic radio is a media outlet, like TV in general, but it truly engages my mind and my sould. It is in no way deadening like TV and other radio programming can be.

To show you how important it is, we’re right at the eastern edge of our Catholic radio station’s broadcast area. To listen to it in the house, I gladly put a portable jam box on an open window sill and move the antenna all around to tune it in well enough to understand what is being said.

It’s scratchy sometimes, but that doesn’t deter me.

Another example to show it’s importance. I drive home from work during the second half of the daily Catholic Answers Live broadcast. When I pull into the driveway, I have to open a gate (it’s closed to keep my three-year-old son from roaming the neighborhood) to be able to park my car in the garage. I’ll be listening to the show in my car. But when I get out of it, I still hear it, because my wife is listening to it in the house and the sound flows out through the window!

We had a Catholic Radio station in Cleveland from 1995-1998. On the weekends and morning and evening drive times, we had a WIDE variety of catholic contemporary music played during those times. Mixed in were traditional songs and seasonal music. It CAN be done.
Just go to this site as an example of what Catholc Contemporary music is out there.

I currently in my hard drive have almost 900 songs just of Catholic contempory music, which includes Byzantine Rite music and some chant music as well. I also know of a few Internet sites that offer Catholic Contemproy Music, but for those who can’t take their computer out of their home, portable catholic music via radio, still neeeds to be looked into.
 
Catholic Radio is directly responsible for the conversion, reversion and confirmation of many souls, my own included. This is why I donate to keep our local station on the air.

Catholic radio is extremely vital. It is the true voice of reason in a world that easily goes astray from Truth, especially when it comes to discussion of what the Church teaches. Supporting it and keeping it going is, without question, the right thing to do.

The only station that plays Catholic music outside of Catholic Music Network and EWTN affiliated stations is Omegarock.com. It’s an internet radio station that plays rock, rap, & hip-hop music that is by Catholic & Christian artists. Some of these artists did some of the official music for past World Youth Days. What makes Omegarock.com definitively “Catholic” are minute-long sketches between songs dealing with morality and Church teaching and is geared toward teens and young adults. Though I am in my 30’s, it is good to hear music that inspires and can grab the attention of Catholics at the age that they are most likely to stray from the Church and her teachings.
 
Catholic Radio is a becon of light!! We need Catholic radio, you would not believe how many lives have changed since Relevant radio came to our area 2 years ago.

Catholic radio has been a lifeline to me. I listened for years to WEWN shortwave and now have an AM station in my town. People who can’t pick up am or fm broadcasts can pick up WEWN on shortwave with a very inexpensive receiver. I’ve given away many $39 SW radios from Radio Shack. You have to change the frequency a couple of times during the day but that’s not too hard. Even with a cheap radio the reception is very good in most parts of the US and Canada. When I hear the station ID with the “Salve Regina” signature I am often moved beyond words.
 
Catholic Radio is extremely important!!! It has taught me so much about my faith - I never realized how very little I knew about Catholicism until I started listening. Also, now when I am in a situation in which the Church is being bashed, I feel confident to defend the faith or at least to direct people to check out the website to learn more about the faith. At least 5 times within the past 3 months, Catholic Answers and Catholic.Com have aided me in gently instructing Catholic co-workers who were bashing the faith. Some of them are now checking out either the radio station or the website on a fairly regular basis and one has started attending mass again on a regular basis - all thanks to Catholic Radio!

The Catholic voice must be heard – and continue to become louder and clearer. There are so many people out there in today’s society who want nothing more but to see Catholicism fade away. Sad to say, but so much of our culture is based on what we see/read in the media. So many are driven by the headlines in the entertainment industry. If a Catholic voice is not represented properly, our faith, and Christianity as a whole, will continue to become irrelevant in the eyes of those influenced by media. So, it’s important for Catholic Answers to continue its mission and continue to grow and spread the Truth.

It’s ironic that there was a time that Catholicism had a big piece of the media/entertainment pie. Just think of all the Bing Crosby films, Fr. Coughlin, Fulton Sheen. And they were very influential too. Sure, today we have fledgling Catholic radio and Fr. Benedict Groeschel (thankfully), but the difference is that the former group were all recognizable in the secular world, whereas the latter is visible only in Catholic circles only (and small circles I might add – the majority of parishioners I know still haven’t a clue Catholic radio even exists).

Pray always for the success of this apostolate. It has changed lives.

I haven’t read the entire thread, so if I’m repeating someone else’s comments, please forgive me.

I know that I wouldn’t be a Catholic today without Catholic Radio. It was the one thing, above everything else, that helped me learn the truth about Catholicism. I started listening to Catholic radio just as I was beginning to research Catholicism. I loved listening to the call-in shows (and still do) and I occasionally called in with my own questions. I learned so much from those shows, and others like “The Dr. Is In”, which gives such great practical advice to parents and families.

There were other factors that helped me come to a decision about the converting when I realized that the Catholic Church was the Church Christ established, but it was Catholic Radio that got me to that realization.

Without Catholic Radio, I’d still be a Protestant.

Here is an idea combine all Catholic radio stations maybe with EWTN to make one SUPER catholic radio station!!! 😃 👍
 
If I win PowerBall, the lion’s share of my philanthropic spending will be to Catholic media, particularly radio. Catholic radio rocks.
 
I would love Catholic radio in the Columbus OH area. I can pick up about 10 christian non-catholic stations in this radio market but but nothing catholic. I do listen on the web to Catholic Answers Live when I can.

If I travel North, I can faintly hear a Catholic ststion out of Canton and if I travel a little South I can hear a Catholic station out of Cincinati. How about a station in the Columbus - Dayton area? I pray that we do soon.
 
Catholic radio is so necessary. There are 100s of stations from the Protestant viewpoint for each Catholic station. Folks should be able to hear about our faith. Representatives from our local station in Madera, Ca. came to our parish and gave a great talk at Mass. Hope they will return every year with their pledge envelopes.

I use to get ewtn and the lds channel on direct tv, both of them got taken off, they left on all the tbn stuff. I dont mind tbn as long as I dont watch it. The Christian radio stations play vitiman shows, gold coin shows, market shows, maybe a gospel show, Contemporary Christian music. I mean thats better then howard stern, I think.

I miss ewtn and even the LDS shows. Regular tv is so lonely for lack of a better word. As pathetic as it may sound that is about all the fellowship I really have for the most part.

Catholic radio helped bring be back to the Catholic Church.

While my husband got me going to Church and my children’s welfare brought be back to daily prayer, Dr Guarendi got me listening and wanting more. This lead to wanting more Catholic Teaching and more prayer.

Catholic radio is the best!!! It’s great for getting the truth out there and there are non-catholics who listen! It’s great to learn more about our awesome faith! It’s great for me because it keeps me away from the other talk radio and focused on the reason we are all here, to praise and glorify God.
