I find non-believers are the first to say “I’m a good person. I don’t steal, I haven’t murdered anyone.” They compare themselves to the murderers but not to Mother Teresa. Why is that? They put the standard for themselves very low but they often don’t extend that same generosity to the person at work annoying them, or for the guy with his signal on in traffic.
When speaking to a non-believer, offer a carrot rather than a stick. The ‘going to hell’ conversation is not a very effective strategy. Pray, and try to find out what their ‘carrot’ is.
