Yes you would. And so do I. Amazing what multiple identites do, for those who do not know the history of these debates.

LOL, and I started my “Long Journey” account because my “Jerusha” identity was being mercilessly attacked. Nowadays, I just hit (!) A bit wiser.

Ahhhh memories…I was involved in that thread too.

Boy, those were the days…😃

Yes. I was way too combative and aggressive.

I am glad things in my life settled down and the folks here were willing to give me another chance

Yes the LDS is a cult , Joe Smith changed his book to suit his needs, many times. Need anyone say more if the book is wrong can the cult be any better ? Your servant in Christ Jesus, Gary

I don’t think the modern idea of a “cult” is a useful one. Its meaning is at once ambiguous and intensely negative, lending itself to abuse.

However, one thing that concerns me about the LDS’s, apart of course from their beliefs themselves which I believe to be false, is the way they seem to often be less than up front (to say the least) to outsiders about what they actually believe, including to people they are trying to convert. I suspect the impression that deception is used in their apologetics and missionary work is part of what makes people label them as a cult.
Every/next time I have missionaries approach my door I invite them in. The discussion usually evolves around to: Blood oaths, “Godhood”, Polygamy, and I invariably ask them: WHY DON’T YOU TELL YOUR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS ALL OF THIS IN THE BEGINNING??? Obviously people would run for the hills & slam the door in the young missionaries faces. This waiting to divulge specific important information is a MUST otherwise they would gain zero converts. When newbies are initiated and become “temple worthy”, they get the “rest of the story”. This is a method used by cults who all have something to hide. They get their claw hooks on you & you’re in too deep by the time one wakes up & smells the coffee (a grace for sure).

Catholics have NEVER been allowed to join “secret” societies, especially Masons… They have the “secret” oaths all 32 (or so). LDS use this secrecy device.

I heard of a man who a co-worker knew well. He was threatened, had his phones bugged, had to have people come in & sweep for bugs on a monthly basis.

As a former missionary myself I can tell you that missionaries were taught to only give them the basics. To build a foundation first in the gospel so that later when they are taught these things, they will understand it better because of the foundation that was laid previously. I was told that it was like this, “you don’t feed babies meat, you feed them milk, then once they are grown, you feed them meat”. or “don’t chew more than you can swallow”. Clearly in order for one to understand polygamy and all that jazz, one needs to come to an understanding and a testimony of Joseph Smith. But mormons rush through the process too quickly and are all about numbers and not testimonies. Thats why converts don’t last long. That and because the whole church is founded about a false pretense.

Thunder & lightening & an extreme downpour ended my post - had to shut down computer fast. The gentleman listed above was very harassed when he left mormonism - my coworker told me about it as it was happening. WHY was this man subjected to such craziness?

Techniques cults use include the few thoughts are listed here:

SECRECY - Initiates kept in dark until progress deeper into group until it’s too late. The missionaries don’t tell you about controversial beliefs: Jesus & Satan are brothers, Jesus’ good plan vs. Satan’s bad plan, blood oaths, polygamy, impending “godhood” for the husband, slavish eternal sex for the wife on & on - do they.

SHUNNING - mental & emotional attack that disrespects one’s dignity & humanity - an affront to the 5th Commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill (murder)”. This rejection is a brutal injustice to the “shunnee” definitely NOT a Christian practice. Is like a mental, emotional stoning of a person.

Belief that ONLY they have the “TRUTH”". Everyone else is SUSPECT, APOSTATES, HERETICS…

SCRIPTURE TWISTING Very commonly used & initiates strongly discouraged to research “heretical” materials (“from the devil”) outside their exclusive group. Read the FINE PRINT anyway!: historic documents such as founders personal writings kept from you? If so, WHY? Are they arrogant, pompous, lack charity or off the rails in general or have 99 truths & 1 lie? Can be tricky!

Do founders, leaders display a MESSIAH COMPLEX. WE have the TRUTH, WE KNOW what is BEST for YOU - history is littered with Pied Piper personalities that have wreaked much havoc on the tragically unaware & caused many tears to be shed. No telling how many souls have been LOST. :bighanky:

ATTACK & CONDEMN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH??? This is a biggie - they have to attack the RCC in order to CREATE a BASIS for their EXISTENCE - failure of the RCC or the Inquisition or Galileo or some other tired old canard crops up. Do they say to your face they respect our Church? Their reading materials usually give them away? I was assured by a JW later to clearly read attacks, they have printed outright attacks for decades of RCC…

USE EMOTIONAL GIMMICKS: LOVE BOMBING or FEAR to CONTROL? Heavy welcome for the new initiates. Touchy feely in the beginning, fades when you’re fully initiated - then the heat is on to pay mandatory tithing to the penny or are not “temple worthy” by “they” (who is the terrible, anonymous authority of “they” - to quote Archbishop Fulton Sheen - anyway), mandatory to perform, put in your hours… works oriented until you’re run ragged? Use fear to keep foot soldiers in line: you leave & you’ll lose your job, wife, kids, SEE SHUNNING. Also, the subjective silly: “I have a “burning in my bosom” the church (lds) is “true”!” Weelllll, I have NEWS for YOU: I have a “burning in my bosom” YOUR house, autos, bank accounts, jewelry, investments, personal property IS ALL MINE! - is silly line of thinking but DANGEROUS!

If YOUR group practices some or ALL of these things, You may want to reconsider.

Trust the evidence of your senses; use the brain God gave you. RESEARCH! If you read stuff that stirs the pit of your stomach, RUN! Most of all PRAY, PRAY, PRAY :gopray2:

They think the Bible is incomplete and corrupt and there “Book of Mormon” is true. Thus proving it does not believe in basic Christian Doctrines which makes it a cult.

However, the Book of Mormon presents some basic Protestant Christian doctrine, and much of it was copied from the Bible. If one gets into their Doctrines and Covenants, you would see that they later apostatized from even that. The D&C is a real eye-opener. The BoM is nothing more than a religious fantasy novel. Not very remarkable, in fact, poorly written. Go explore for yourself, instead of regurgitating others’ opinions.

Well, we Catholics believe the Bible is incomplete also!

Not incomplete in the same fashion of Mormons, but incomplete as in the doctrine of NOT Bible Alone.

We stand on 3 legs. Sacred Scripture; Sacred Tradition; and Sacred Magisterium.

If you look into it…Mormonism use to have a lot more practices which were done away with to save there public image when Utah became a state.
