How is this acceptable at any level? Pope blesses Rebecca Kadaga, champion of "kill the gays" bill.

In the world of marketing and politics that doesn’t matter. The catholic church has vocally taken up the fight against gay rights, all while claiming to love gays and be against “unjust discrimination”. Their opposition will exploit this incident and the public will notice, and it will hurt the church’s stance on gays.
Although in this day and age this might hurt his image as the Pope I think he acknowledges every human being as a child of God, even if they have gone astray. His blessing is just acknowledging that and that he is praying for their soul, not that he is agreeing with their action. Again, it is how one chooses to interpret his actions, only he knows his feelings.

Saying that what she is doing is unthinkable!

I didn’t notice the original source, but the one you posted is also operating from a specific viewpoint. I would need an unbiased source.
Is there an unbiased source any more? Objectivity no longer seems to be a quality towards which journalists aspire.

This type of article makes me facepalm because of how obviously sensationalistic it is.
I’ve seen many ahteists and homosexualists on FaceBook try to attack the Pope because of it. The fact that he met with her in a group is not something which should have been oversensationalized to the point of sheer recklessness.

Here is the article. In a nutshell, the Pope has met with and given a blessing to Uganda’s Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, champion of a bill that would mandate life imprisonment or the death penalty for people convicted of the “crime” of being gay. I’m absolutely stunned, because I thought the Pope and the Catholic Church were better than that. Can someone please help me out here? Why would he do that, and what are your thoughts on it?
Theaw is harsh, possibly too harsh, but considering the devastation wrought in Southern Africa by HIV, it might be somewhat understandable.

It does not mandate the death penalty or imprisonment merely for having homosexual tendencies or attraction, only for actions such as engaging in homosexual advocacy or sex. Just as we have laws against pedophilic *activity. *Uganda’s death penalty is for “aggravated homosexuality” which is something like having homosexual sex if one has HIV, which can be a death sentence for the partner, no?

It is not acceptable. But, the majority of people on this forum will rush to defend his actions at all cost. What a horrible message he sent…
Try to read the source article in this thread and then see if it has an agenda.

What credence does the west give the Pope as it is? The people are taking their cue from a hostile media that is selective in what it reports. A good news story from the Vatican, that paints the Pope in a good light, is not going to get coverage. It’s up to us to give the good news from Rome to our neighbours by educating ourselves to what is going on.
Hence me thinking that the mainstream media there in the West is more anti-Catholic than the American Know-Nothing Party of the 19th century and the second Ku Klux Klan of the 20th century.
Before anyone tries to go after this post with report after report, here’s a little-known fact about the second KKK.
The second KKK hated Catholics A LOT. They went off doing things from writing virulently anti-Catholic books and tracts to interrupting Masses on purpose.

:shrug:At the end of the day though it only hurts his credibility. It’s far less likely that people in the west will lend credence to what he says about homosexuality when he does things like this.
If you asked for a blessing from the Pope, even if you didn’t believe in it or his beliefs, he will give it to you because love compels him.

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Don’t you agree that sinners need blessings more than the sinless? The sinless are on their way to heaven, what more can they benefit from blessings?

I see no reason why BXVI should not bless anyone who wants his blessing.

But this posting did make me wonder if he has spoken out against the Ugandan proposal? IC that he would not want to get involved in politics of various nations, but it seems to me that a public statement condemning the proposal might be appropriate.

If I recall correctly, the Pope did say something against this proposed bill.

From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_Anti-Homosexuality_Bill

Uganda’s Catholic Archbishop of Kampala Cyprian Lwanga stated in December 2009 that the bill was unnecessary and “at odds with the core values” of Christianity, expressing particular concerns at the death penalty provisions. Lwanga argued that instead homosexuals should be encouraged to seek rehabilitation.[71] For its part, the Holy See has maintained excellent relations with Uganda, with Pope Benedict XVI receiving the Ugandan ambassador in December 2009 and commending the climate of freedom and respect in the country towards the Catholic Church. During this meeting, there was no mention of the anti-homosexuality bill.[72] However, three days earlier the Vatican legal attaché to the United Nations stated that “Pope Benedict is opposed to ‘unjust discrimination’ against gay men and lesbians”.[73]

I could not find anything more recent. Students and faculty at Yale Divinity, and at Fordham are petitioning the Pope to make a strong public statement.

I don’t disagree with the meeting, world leaders meet with people all the time and when the Pope meets people he blesses them. That’s just what he does. I continue to hope that those blessings bear fruit.

I would like a stronger statement to be made against this bill which advocates death for gay people. Any gay person by the way, regardless of how they live their life. Anyone can report you as “gay” and you’re under arrest and up for the death penalty. That’s a bit more than “unjust discrimination” and needs to be clearly condemned for what it really is.

God blesses me at the end of every Mass, even though I’m a sinner who doesn’t deserve it.

I am in no position to say someone else shouldn’t be blessed.

Question

Are the acts of homosexuality one of life or death according to the word of God?

According to the word of God homosexuality is not acceptable. Its a mortal sin that will send you to hell.

So that means it’s ok for the state to execute all gay people? That’s what the bill says and that’s the basis for the discussion here. Should the Pope be blessing a person who advocates such a policy?

As I said above, I don’t disagree with the blessing but I would like to see a stronger statement from the Pope on that bill.

You do know homosexuality acts are a mortal sin? If you live like this its not man you need fear its the judgement from Jesus Christ himself. Make no mistake about it…Jesus is not politically correct.

Death is nothing compared to everlasting torment. However you die your life is but a vapor.

Besides a mortal sin is a mortal sin in Gods eyes a murderer and homosexual acts one no more than the other. Both are abominations.

So does mankind knows better than God himself?

Simon and Garfunkle said it best Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.
