How long was Jesus' hair?

What was considered long when Jesus walked the earth? In the bible Peter states that a man should be ashamed of himself if he has long hair.
 
You know, I just came across that same Bible verse and was wondering the same thing! lol great question. Sorry I don’t have a respose to it!

Please understand, I’m no expert. There was another thread a couple of days ago asking a similar question. As I said then and I’ll say again. The bible has a physical description of Christ. I don’t think it specifically addresses his hair length, but it does describe it as being like wool. Also, I have seen several, to say the least, documentaries on Christ and the early iconography depicts Christ with short hair. I think some early paintings also depict him smiling, but I could be wrong about that.

At the end of the day, I think it’s an interesting subject and worth looking into. I assume that since we know the birthplace of Christ (Bethlehem) which is in the middle east, we should be able to reasonably assume that he looked like most people native to that region today. Probably somewhat dark skinned, with curly and probably course hair. Unfortunately, I think this makes some people uncomfortable for reasons beyond me.

I don’t remember seeing that description before. Where is it?

I stand corrected. 😦 Sorry if I mislead you. it was not my intention. I remembered the passage but forgot it is in Revelation. So, it is a description after the resurrection. I guess there should be some similarity. Other references to his physical appearance:

“He had no form or comeliness that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not” (Isaiah 53:2-3 RSV)

“He had to be made like His brethren in every respect” (Hebrews 2:17 RSV)

There may be others, but these are the ones that come up most often in my research. So, I may only be right in the sense that we should expect that he would have looked like most people native to that region.

It does seem, looking at artistic representations going back for centuries, that men in Palestine (including the Biblical Israel) wore their hair longer than the Romans or Greeks did.

There’s a way for a man to have long hair that is definitely masculine.

Likewise, there are feminine short haircuts for women.

I think the key in these verses is not to send mixed gender signals.

In other words, it has to be determined by the culture you’re in, and not to try to shock or embarass others.
 
Based on the Shroud of Turin Jesus’ hair was shoulder length.

I might be a little defensive so forgive me. :o I was looking at a thread discussing whether or not Jesus was taken into heaven body and soul. I certainly think that it’s pretty well settled that he was taken body and soul. Otherwise, Mary Magdellan and the apostles would have found a body in the tomb and they most certainly did not. So, if Christ went to sit at the right hand of God with his body, then we could logically assume that he appears the same today as when he ascended some 2000 years ago. Therefore, the description in Revelations should be a reasonably accurate description of Christ before the resurrection. Whew!!:o
 
There must be some explanation. Either shoulder length was not considered long at the time Peter said that, or Jesus’ hair was not long & for some reason most believe it was long.
 
Does it really matter what length his hair was. What matters is that he is the risen lord.
One the biblical thing on short vs long hair ive heard it said somewhere that it was a cultural thing that the romans had which Paul said. I don;t think its a teaching on morals and faith, more of on the lines of roman cultural norms.
 
Well it matters, because if Jesus had long hair then the bible is talking bad about him.
 
I can almost guarantee you that no picture of Jesus you would commonly see is anywhere close to what Jesus looked like Here is a composite based on skulls, etc. of people who lived in the region at Jesus’ time. The hair style was a common one and met the religious requirements of the time as well. The facial structure is based on averages of hundreds of skulls, teeth, and more. So, here is the best guess as to what Jesus looked like. But, who knows:

Peter spoke about a cultural thing which bears a moral lesson. Though I don’t know what that lesson is since I’m not a Bible professor.

The Shroud of Turin is more authentic than the skin on my body!

I see you are fairly new here. Good forum etiquette is that when you assert something (like “In the bible Peter states that a man should be ashamed of himself if he has long hair”) and especially when you reference scripture is to give the book, chapter and verse you are referencing. It helps us to know which version of the Bible you are reading and if you are quoting out of context or not.

Jesus would not of had long hair at all. In fact, his hair would have been short. It is historical fact that during the time of Jesus and in his location the only men who indeed would of had long hair were Homosexuals. While I did my undergrad in history I took several near east courses and heard this several time I was kind of shocked. I than looked it up and and found it was indeed true. The only reason we know him to have long hair today is do to the art of the middle ages and renaissance. They simply used the common hair style for men during that time which was long hair. Jesus had short hair not long.
