How long will it take for non-Catholics to finally accept Catholicism?

For me to consider re-accepting Catholicism, some of the practices and teachings of the church would need to be reconsidered, especially by the Vatican. For me, I would desire to see these things happen:
  1. A reconsideration on teachings concerning sexual morality and issues of life and death, especially the absolute ban on contraception.
  2. A repeal of the ban on divorced and remarried Catholics from receiving the sacraments.
  3. A repeal of the new canon law penalty of excommunication on those who ordain women, and a theological re-examination of the question of ordaining women.
  4. Removing the penalties in canon law (such as canon 1371) on those who dissent from church teachings and allowing conscientious disagreement with church teaching, without threats or imposition of penalties for conscientious disagreement with a non-infallible church teaching.
  5. A reconsideration of the relationship between the Pope, the bishops and priests and the laity of the church, and also a reconsideration of the relationship between the church and other churches and religions - I would like to see a retreat from the positions espoused and endorsed in ‘Dominus Iesus’ especially.
  6. An official encyclical apologising to the victims of clerical sexual abuse, and amending the code of canon law to automatically excommunicate clerics, religious or laity who sexually molest children or those in their care.
  7. A retreat from the policy of threatening or imposing excommunications on Catholics (whether politicians, judges or laypeople) for voting in relation to certain matters.
  8. Removing the office of the CDF or at least, reducing its scope and importance in the church as a whole. I think having an official ‘watchdog’ that tries to enforce unthinking and unquestioning orthodoxy and belief among a very diverse church has turned out to be one of the most unprofitable and damaging of the Vatican (and church’s) ministries.
For all my disagreement with some aspects of the church’s teaching and ministry, I think its strength lies in its committment to social justice and charity; I think in both the West and the world in general, we are sorely in need of more work on social justice and human rights issues, and also on charitable activity focused on reducing human suffering and inequality. The church’s teachings on social justice are in my view its great strength, and in time should help remedy the damage and weaknesses caused by faults and failures in other areas.

As long as the world is around. There will always be some non-Catholics in the world, up to the very end I assume. But that dosen’t mean things are grim. Remember: Jesus will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. 🙂

If you’re waiting for all that to happen, you’ll be waiting an eternity Greg. The Church is not going to change. The Church CANNOT change, because the Church is the Body of Christ, and Christ is God, and God is by His very Nature an Unchangeable Being. So you’ll just have to accept the Church for what the Church is.

“The Church is not going to change. The Church CANNOT change,”

I think that is one of its great weaknesses, sadly, if indeed what you claim is true. In any case, the matters I have mentioned in 1-8 concern matters and policies that were developed and implemented mostly in the 20th century, with the exception of the CDF, which is an office that goes back a few centuries. Since they were developed at a certain time, they can also be changed or reversed, if the church leadership were so minded. I only desire to see them changed because from my point of view they are manifestly wrong and unjust, and hence require reconsideration or repeal.

Since these policies are historically contingent, and came into being at a historical point in time, it is nonsense to say there are unchanged and can never change. The church, like anything else, is a creature of history, and nothing historical is eternal and remains in the same shape and form through contingent historical events.

To the eyes of the worldly, supernatural strength is weakness and wisdom is stupidity. Thankfully that’s not the case, though. The Church’s inability to change from the Church to something else is the work of God. He will not allow His New Covenant to be destroyed, nor allow His People to destroy themselves, no matter how many sins are committed or how many die on Earth. In fact, because He made the Church reside not only on Earth but also in Purgatory and in Heaven, He has secured the Church’s eternity. It is all a part of His Wisdom. But that’s not what the world sees - it wants the Church to change, to become worldly, to become less than Divine. It wants God to change too, for Him to stop with His Wisdom and His Power. But He is who He is. So nothing and no one change change Him, nor His will, nor His works, nor His Church. This is true whether you accept it or not, Greg, because, contrary to the belief of the world, reality dose not exist in the human mind - it only exists in one mind: the Mind of the Lord! 🙂

The Catholic Church does not (absolutely speaking) need you… You need Her… and virtually everything she teaches and practices… Jesus built a Church that would help us to get to Heaven…

it doesn’t sound like you want to get There…

I have been married for 40 years to the same woman. We would have divorced many times over the years if it wasn’t for our belief in the sacrament of Marriage. But not being married or never being married you might not understand that.

You are very authoritative in your postings on what The Holy Roman Catholic Church has to do for you to consider coming back. Just for a second, why don’t you consider what you should do to become a follower of Christ in the way that is pleasing to Him and The Father? Yea, it is hard to be a pratical Catholic, but Greg it has its rewards. Eternal life and the ability to join with Jesus every time we go to communion as He says “This is my body…” And we then have the honor of Eating His Body and Drinking His blood as He commanded we must do in order to enter into the Kingdom of God.

God Bless, I am on my way to Mass to follow His commandment. My Lord awaits me…**

Hi

First I would like to say that I find your pole an errror. You forgot to add “None of the above” as one of the listing. Try it again and let us see who would do it?

I’m a former RC who converted to Eastern Orthodoxy back in 2001. I feel GOD has drawn me to the One True Church and it is in the Orthodox Christian Church.

Lets ask the Question how long will it take for Roman Catholics to join the One True Church in Holy Orthodoxy???

Just wanted add my statement here.

Have a good day.

Frank, you didn’t say who’s post you found in error, but that doesn’t matter. You are entitled to your opinion.

But married priests? Appointing your own bishops? Not following the apostolic succession from Peter make the EO like any other protestant religion. I am sorry that somehow you were presweaded to leave the real church. **

Hi RobGentner,

Sorry to say you are wrong on apostolic succession.

Peter was not the first so called bishop of Rome. The was another that served before him. The name escapes right now.

It is the Roman Catholic Church that acts like any other protestant religion. One if the big ones is the RC Church rejection of the Latin Tridentine Mass for the so called Novus Ordo of Pope Paul VI. That was a big doosie of a mistake on Pope Paul VI part. Don’t forget that Pope Paul VI turn the altar around and made a table of it; I just wanted to quote the words of Pope Puis XXII in a Doc. he wrote

We can see how the new Pope has to now allow it to start to grow so that he can rebuild his Church.

The question still stands “How long will it take for Roman Catholics to join the One True Church in Holy Orthodoxy”

Question for you. You said that you were Cradle Catholic, married 40 years Born again 1976. Strange that is what a protestant would say. You must be a member of the chasmatic renewal group in your Church. That one of the protestant like group that grew out of the Vatican II changes when that trashed the Latin Tridentine Mass.

Think of this in France only twelve % are praticing Catholic religion 10% use the Tridentine Mass and 2% use Novus Ordo Mass.

I use to be a Traditionalist Catholic so I very I know of your group very well. I’m not into waving my hands in the air thing.

Nothing here was was a strike at you; just what I seen from my time in the Roman Church.

Hi RobGentner,

Sorry to say you are wrong on apostolic succession.

Peter was not the first so called bishop of Rome.
Peter was the Pope right from day one, even when he was Bishop of Antioch. The Papacy is a different office than Bishop of Rome.

In modern times, and for most of history (including the period of time when St. Peter passed the Papacy to St. Linus, the guy who was Bishop of Rome at the time of his death), the Bishop of Rome is the one who receives the Papal succession, but this is a matter of venerable custom; it is not a requirement. If St. Peter had died in Antioch, his Papal successor would have been the Bishop of Antioch, but as it turned out, he died in Rome, so it was the Bishop of Rome who got the pallium.

Hi jmcrae,

That is your churchs’ view and my church would say you’re RC is made an error. So the stand off goes on and on.

Before the Church of Rome started the Church of the East was well underway.

Wasn’t Saint Malachy who was born in Amagh Ireland in 1094, who prophecies about 112 popes since his time. Since his time you have had 111 Pope so far. Malachy said that the 112 pope would be the last and no more would follow. He said that Rome would be destroyed.

Well let see if he is right or wrong. notice the Orthodox will go on like it has since the beginning.

Have a great day.

Hi RobGentner,

Sorry to say you are wrong on apostolic succession.
Sorry to say you are wrong but you believe your new church not the RCC so lets drop it.

Don’t forget that Pope Paul VI turn the altar around and made a table of it; I just wanted to quote the words of Pope Puis XXII in a Doc. he wrote**My brother in Christ, It doesn’t matter the language, I have heard our mass said in Korean, German, Spanish, Italian, Japaneese, English, and I even like to go to a latin mass here in San Antonio, somethings. The only important thing is that Jesus is there in the host and wine. ** he isn’t in your church. Ypou lost that over 1100 years ago.

We can see how the new Pope has to now allow it to start to grow so that he can rebuild his Church. Our church is alive and changing every day in every land. What doesn’t change is our sacraments and our precepts. The small t traditions are man made and can be changed as we desire. That was why Jesus appointed a rock to guide his church.

The question still stands “How long will it take for Roman Catholics to join the One True Church in Holy Orthodoxy”**Already answered: Give us a second! **

Question for you. You said that you were Cradle Catholic, married 40 years Born again 1976. **It is different to sit in a pew accepting what you have been taught and to experience Jesus love for you at a personal level. It is called Born of the Spirit. It infers a personal relationship with Jesus! ** Strange that is what a protestant would say. **He could say that! But he wouldn’t eat his savior’s body or drink his blood or be transported back to the first last supper every time his pastor said the words “Take and eat this is my body…” That is the BIG difference. We are all christians. **You must be a member of the chasmatic renewal group in your Church. **No, my parish doesn’t have one of those groups actually. I am involved with a group known as ACTS. **That one of the protestant like group that grew out of the Vatican II changes when that trashed the Latin Tridentine Mass.protestants are Catholic like groups that grew out of their misunderstanding of the Catholic church and Its power to control how they worship. Vatican II gave an option, the church jumped on it to have their people better understand the Mass. I perfer the Latin Tridentine Mass, but so long as Jesus is there I am content. I don’t even complain about the priest’s homily or other petty things. What importance are they?/COLOR]

Think of this in France only twelve % are praticing Catholic religion 10% use the Tridentine Mass and 2% use Novus Ordo Mass.**Ok, I thought of it  **
