I am just curious … based on casual conversations with others … or your own “feelings” on the subject … how many Catholics are being put off by the new Mass translation?

Is it a lot of people or just a few?

Is it just Catholics in their 30’s and 40’s?

How effective or thorough has been your experience in explaining the new translation and how the need for it came about?

[One of my 40-something friends said casually … does the new translation mean that everything he has expressed a belief in all these years seems to have been “invalid”.]

So, I’m just looking for comments by others.

Personally, I don’t think many, although they are the usual vociferous group. The one’s who actually DO like it don’t have an axe to grind, so they are not as loud.

Around here, it’s more like Catholics in their late 50s, 60s (and some 70s). People younger than that don’t seem to mind. At least that’s the impression I get around here

Our parish seems to be mostly accepting of it, although it did take a several weeks to adjust. But our pastor was very good about preparing us for the new translations inviting parishioners to the Wednesday night talks and speaking about it in his homily. I think the pastor’s attitutude toward the new translations will have an effect on what the majority of the parishioners will feel towards it in many cases. Although there are some parishioners who are more well informed and accepting than some pastors.

I hate it and it takes away from the experience for me, and my friends hate it, but what can we do? It’s not like the Church is a democracy or anything 🤷

I have no idea… no one I’ve spoken to has said much about it either way (but I’m in a new parish so I’m not really talking to people on a more then superficial level at this point).

As for me? I’m a brand new Catholic (approaching my one year birthday this Easter!) and it’s no biggee to me. Hee. I’m actually enjoying the fact that everyone else has to learn with me! Yay! I don’t feel like the odd man out anymore. 😉

How does it take away from the ‘experience’ for you? Because you have to struggle to figure out what to say?

As a new convert I had a hard time for awhile learning all the responses but once they’re learned and you’ve got it figured out again will you still hate it?

I am not a English speaker and I doubt there is anybody without reservations.
When there is change, we react. It is just naturally.
It was not OUR translation and no one paid attention to our desires.
Bu, in the end, it will take time, but we will learn ot love it…

It takes away from the experience for me because I hate the new changes and I hate Latin. I find it very distracting. If you are getting out of it what you expect to get out of it, that’s great. But not everyone is the same. I can’t say for sure if I’ll still hate it in the future, it might grow on me. But if I know myself, I will probably hate it because I hate the parts that are in Latin. I’ll probably pray the Rosary during the service up till the Eucharistic part of the Mass.

I have only heard a few people express discontent with the new translation. They were in their 50s/early 60s. The younger ones all seem to take it in stride. Nothing more than mild annoyance at having to learn something new. No one seems to object to the reasons, they are just a little less comfortable since the old words were so familiar.

There are parts in Latin?

What parts of the revision are in Latin? My parish has been learning the various parts for the past few months, and implemented it fully 2 Sundays ago, and I don’t recall any of it being in Latin. Maybe your parish is different from mine and is actually using Latin rather than English in some parts?

Be careful. Not participating in the Mass means that you would not be fulfilling your Sunday obligation.

God Bless.

hmm, if adding parts in Latin isn’t part of the new Mass, maybe my priest is adding the Latin… I’ll ask him — and ask him to change it back to English if it’s not required.

Maybe he’s using more Latin at different scheduled Masses? I’ll ask him and just change the time I go to the one using less Latin. That will help.

I have not spoken much with others on this, but my own experience has been that
a) When I first read the changes they seemed kind of “clunky” but when I attended mass and heard them read in the context of the mass, I found them to not be “clunky” at all.
b) As far as our parish is concerned there seems to be a more full participation in the responses and such than before. Each pew has a laminated sheet with the appropriate responses printed on it and everyone seems to be using it.

I was speaking a friend who happens to be the wife of a deacon and she mentioned about some of the complaints, the usual, “why do they need to change” - sort of things. And we just chuckled with each other because we are both old enough to remember how precipitous the change was from Latin to English in the 1960’s - no warning, no time to review, no nothing…one week it was Latin and the next it was English 🤷

Here we have had a year or more to read over and prepare for this change ans still people grouse…Ah Yes, Human nature…

Peace
James

I would talk to the priest If I where you. The purpose of the new translation is to have the English version closer in translation to the original Latin not to be in Latin.

Well that’s what I thought when I first heard about it months ago…

I haven’t heard anyone complaining. I get a chuckle out of the mixed responses at “And also with … your spirit.” I LOVE LOVE LOVE “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed,” and I will defend that change to the death to anyone who doesn’t like it.

I think we’re all big boys and girls and can handle a few changes…The priests have to change a LOT more of what they say!

On the Latin, some of that may be Advent, you know. Last night at Mass, there was quite a lot of Latin and that church doesn’t use Latin a whole lot. I know -0- Latin except singing Adeste Fidelus on Christmas. So I felt a bit left out, but as I looked around, a lot of people also weren’t singing along so…

🤷

There’s a great video about the changes, have you seen it? It was made by Life Teen but it explains clearly and simply what has happened and why. (I like Thomas’ acting, too!) 😃

New Roman Missal Explained

I am a bit dissapointed. Not at the translation but at what is going on in our parish. The parish has been WELL FORMED in the new texts. Yet this week participation was so much less than the first week. I saw few people picking up the missalettes or pew cards or saying the prayers. It is almost as if they didn’t want to bother. We even reminded them at the beginning of mass to use the missalettes and pew cards. LIke I said, I am dissapointed in the people of the parish.

I’m in my mid-50s - a Vatican II baby - not bothered in the least.

Been practicing *consubstantial *
(sometimes get tongue-tied) … 👍
