I know there are those who consider Genesis to be a reasonably factual description of the begining of the world. But how many are actually YECs?

Since that is not church teaching I suspect the number isn’t far off from zero.

I’ve certainly encountered Catholics who seem to have adopted Sola Scriptura. Others seem to read Church statements on theological judgment of certain scientific theories as the Church rejecting evolution. I have encountered few YECs from any of the major mainstream Christian churches, most seem to come from the more fundamentalist Protestant streams, where Creationism is pretty actively pushed.

Creationism is largely a side-effect of 19th century Christian revivalism in the US. It certainly has had some influence in some quarters in the older churches, but by and large, churches like the Catholic Church, most Lutheran denominations, Anglicans and the like, have never advocated sola scriptura, YEC forms of Creationism are less palatable.

Is there any relationship between YEC’s and conspiracy theories? Just in casual observation, many that espouse a fundamentalist view of scripture also seem to blame many issues in society on conspiracies. I realize one doesn’t require the other but it just appears to go hand in hand. Am I way off?

As someone who studies conspiracies as history and as fodder for fiction, I think you are way off.

Ed, do you believe in a literal interpretation of Genesis? You, of course, may decline to answer but I was just curious.

No. You’re exactly right.

Case in point, ask…I dunno…Ed, for example, about global warming or vaccines or the age of the earth or 9/11. We could then have something on which to base a decision

@edwest211, can you help out here on any of those topics? We’d appreciate some (name removed by moderator)ut.

Here in the Bible Belt South, I’d imagine that more than half of my fellow parishioners are YECs. The Evangelical influence is so strong that we have to remind people that drinking beer or gambling are NOT in and of themselves sins.

I remember promising a chunk of money to the charity of your choice if you linked me to your fiction. Do you not want to take that up? Good money for a good cause, Ed. I swear I will send it.

Catholics? Or Protestants?

My fellow parishioners are Catholics who have been heavily influenced by Evangelical Fundamentalist Protestants.

Sigh. More Bradskii…
You are being found out, Eddie. Post by post. Look up the meaning of ‘petard’. A bit of Shakespear will enrich your being.
Don’t you two think this is getting a bit too personal?

Too personal? Nah. Not really. I don’t know the guy. It can’t be personal. All I have is an anonymous person on a forum who espouses views that are antithetical to everything I believe. Not necessarily in regard to religion. But on a lot of views that I think should be aired.

So let’s air them! Ed may be a really nice guy. He may help little old ladies across the street. He may be first to buy a round. He may run a home for homeless cats. Who knows…

But his views are worth discussing. They are views that are relevant to matters that I feel are very important. They are views that need to bounced around and dissected and dug into. They are views that prompt claims that need to be repeated if left unanswered. They are views that need the bright sunlight.

As Michael said: It’s not personal.
