Parishes do have geographic boundaries associated with them. At one time most dioceses expected people to belong to the parish in which they resided. (There may have been some national parishes in some places.) People could still attend Mass at other parishes but they were expected to belong to and support their geographic parish.Thanks for all the helpful responses. Guess, what I’m wondering is:
are Catholic churches somehow different in that they have “boundaries”, and you’re “supposed” to go to the one nearest your house?
Now days most (but I don’t think all) bishops have dispensed with any requirements to belong to the geographic parish. It’s not clear to me if Catholics who do not register in any parish are assumed to belong to the geographic parish.
