Jesus and the Sacred Heart

Our Lady and the Child Jesus

Saint Joseph and the Infant Jesus

Saint David

Saint Asaph

There used to be a statue of Saint Francis holding Jesus on the Cross, but one of the Friars tried to move it and it fell and broke in to unsalvageable pieces:(

O, how I miss them! I grew up in a parish which was sided by niches and altars in honor of several saints. It was beautiful, as I recall now, to see people with different devotions kneel down before their favorite saint.

It wasn’t until much later that I discovered the richness that was available to me, as I’d kneel at St. Joseph’s altar to ask for chastity or at St. Anthony’s altar to ask for a girlfriend.

Some say that it was an exaggeration, but that’s a condescending accusation at the faithful in general. It’s a custom that grew out of genuine piety and was torn down, IMHO, by a few who didn’t share the same piety. 😦

Now, our current parish has only 2, St. Mary and St. Joseph, besides the crucifix, of course, in hard to access niches which don’t even have a kneeler…

Lord, have mercy on us all.

I answered 4 but now as I think of it there is only 1 actually in the Church. "others are in the front porch and another is placed at the back entrance.

Inside = Our Lady of Mount Carmel
front Porch = St David and St Anthony
Back entrance = The Pieta

Apart from that we have the most wonderful stained galss windows all over the Church and these and truly magnificent. They make up for the lack of solid 3d statues.

Let’s see (these are not all in the main church, some are in the chapel or outside):

Jesus on the Cross (of course)
St. Joseph holding the infant Jesus
Sacred Heart Jesus
Mary (miraculous medal style crushing snake, etc.)
Mary (regular)
Our Lady of Lourdes in a little grotto outside with St. Bernadette kneeling
A little Mary kind of randomly placed outside near the parking lot
Mary with toddler Jesus
St. Jude (he and miraculous medal Mary each have their own prominant shrines in the main part of the church–the church is named after St. Jude)
A medium sized St. Jude in the chapel
A big bronze St. Jude outside
A little St. Jude in the shrubbery–is he the patron of lawn gnomes or something?? 😃
Some other lawn gnome-esque saint who i have no clue who it is
St. Anthony holding infant Jesus
St. Catherine of Siena
St. Teresa Avila
Divine Infant of Prague

I think that’s it 😃

My Church (my old Parish) doesn’t have enough statues. I think they were trying to go for the modern “Protestant” look. There are not nearly as many statues as before because it’s a new “modern” Church.

How sad.

Blessings,
Joanie

Let me think…

A life size Crucifix above/behind the altar
Blessed Mother
St. Joseph
St. Thomas Aquinas (inside)
St. Thomas Aquinas (outside on the lawn)
St. Francis
St. Clare
St. Theresa

I wish we had more!

Two on the inside, St. Joseph and the Pieta, and several on the grounds outside including the Blessed Mother.

One of Mary carrying the baby Jesus and one of St. Joseph. We used to have one of our patron saint St Jane Frances de Chantal, but that is now in the gym’s atrium.

The church building was just finished a few years ago. You can’t even count the number of status on one hand simply because the church building has NONE.

Unless you count the statue of Jesus that has His back on the cross that hangs on the wall directly behind behind the altar.

This is not a wall crucifix. It does not have the crucified Jesus figure. Instead, the cross on the wall that serves as the backdrop for the altar has a huge, larger than lifesize figure of Jesus – NOT HANGING in crucifixion – instead, the statue of Jesus on that cross has His back against the cross – His left arm hanging almost completely straight down with the palm of His left hand loosely open and outward and His fingers on His left hand pointing downward and outward and away from His hip at a 45 degree angle – His right arm bent almost 90 degrees with His right palm open and His fingers on His right hand in a natural relaxed and open, His 4 fingers curling upwards to the ceiling with His right index finger pointing straight up to the ceiling.

… sigh… whatever happened to us Catholics NOT being afraid of the cross – and preaching Jesus, and Him crucified!?

Make no mistake – I’m not quarreling here about the value of having a statue of Jesus RISEN. This is a perfectly okay statue… **if it were freestanding somewhere ** – and not put up so that His back as the Risen Christ is against the wood of the cross – instead of the Christ suffering for me against the wood of the cross.

Oh… for an actual statue at my church == there is one – outside, there’s a statue of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. With a rosary that someone has put around her.

:hmmm: Reconciliation Room. I heard that term for the first time last week at an RE meeting. Boy did I feel stupid. I thought it was called a confessional. Guess I’m out of the loop with all these new terms for things!

It is a converted “good old-fashined” confessional, and when one first walks in, there’s the opportunity to utilize it just like a booth: a kneeler, a screen to block with Father sitting on the other side of the screen with a slider, and a sort of wooden room divider (for lack of a better term) that blocks Father’s vision should one decide to stay anonymous. He’ll hear the door shut (no question about that) and one can start. But if one walks around the room divider, there’s a shades of the 70s kitchen chair where one can park it and confess face-to-face.

Our pastor is of average height and fits in his section without much of a problem. Visiting priests over 5’8" seem to be squished a bit. For face-to-face, there is a bit of shuffling about of the chairs so nobody bumps.

I am amazed at the number of statues in your churches.

we have one. modernistic of Mary.

Well first off, I’m Methodist; we don’t have statues. (We do have 3 wonderful tapestries: One of Jesus, one of Mary, & one of the Last Supper).

But this seemed the right place to mention the most beautiful church I have ever seen in my life. It is a very old & traditional looking Catholic Church in a nearby city.
Some years ago (before I saw it), it was gutted by a devastating fire. All the statuary was destroyed. But there remained many photos of the former interior, much of which was irreplaceable.
I have no idea who came up with the idea, but the parish found a wonderful muralist. Working with the photos & the memories of parishioners, he painted the whole interior into a glorious trompe l’oiel reproduction of the lost artwork…
There are saints everywhere…He was even able to paint the Stations of the Cross in their original places.
As I write this, I admit to feeling a certain envy for his great skill & the obvious love that he put into his work. Hopefully, his art will inspire generations. Truly, it was beauty from ashes.
God bless.

It is a USAF base chapel, and shared by members of other religions We have two on either side of the altar and they spin back into the wall to make way for the Protestants. The holy water fonts also fold back into the wall, and there is a curtain that covers the cross when non-Christians are using the chapel. Interesting to think that a statue of Mary and Joseph are still hidden there, and the Blessed Sacrament is in a small locked room next to the chapel, no matter who goes there.

I am an non-practicing artist :bounce: while my kids are little, but as soon as they are old enough for me to start painting again I plan to do religious artwork to donate to churches, especially the most humble of churches. I want to learn how to do stained glass too.
