How many people were killed in all of the inquisitions? Who did the killing? Who ordered them?

I’m not asking this question to begin a debate, though I suppose it will be impossible to stop someone from arguing a case if that’s what they want to do. I’m just curious about what the most reputable scholars say the numbers are. I’ve read a few things on the inquisitions, but the numbers vary greatly by the sources. Has the Church accepted a particular number as most accurate. If so, what is it?

Thanks to anyone who’s already done the work and is willing to share what they know here.

I can tell you with confidence that the number of Christians murdered by Stalin’s regime in the USSR far exceeds the number of innocents tortured and killed by the Spanish Inquisition.

And I will note also that the Spanish Inquisition was masterminded and utilized by Their Catholic Majesties Ferdinand and Isabella (yes, that Ferdinand and Isabella), mostly from political and economic motives.

Why does it matter what Stalin did in a discussion of the inquisition? One is still too many!

One is too many!
One what? One traitor, one murderer, one heretic, one innocent person wrongly convicted, one innocent rightly convicted.

The state has the right the execute, with due process, convicted criminals in capital cases.

At least the Spanish Inquisition was about defending Spain from the encroaching Moslems living in the south of Spain. Since Spain was officially Catholic, as non-Catholic was considered a traitor. The Spanish gvt would then, the the person did not repent, punish the person.

The numbers I have read put the total killed at about 3 per year, or 1000 people over the 300 years of the Inquisition. I have heard the number put as high as 5000 but there is no firm data. I have also heard OF numbers as high as 25,000,000. But this exceeds the population of Spain!!!

I love people that know their history.

😦 **Sadly they do.

Exodus 20:13 Thou shall not kill.

Matt5:38 You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
Code:
39But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:

43You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy.

44But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:**

Just a quick semantic correction, albeit a big one. And FTR, I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty and pretty much ending someones life for any reason other than the protection of self and family.

This was in England, this does not count Scotland or Ireland. This occured because the King wasn’t granted a divorce by the Pope. So before a Protestant throws the Spainish Inquisition at Catholics, look at what Protestants did to Catholics.

Douay Rheims 1899 American edition says Thou shalt not kill unless my source is printed wrongly. So does my “Outlines of the Catholic Faith” by the Leaflet Missal Co. Granted they’re rather old if it’s been changed. 🤷

Nah, its just the way the word usage has changed over time. It used to be understood that killing required an act of will, outside of accidental death. Modern usage allows kill to mean ANY death, accidental or intentional. A more accurate translation is murder, but most people dont feel any necessity to change the translation. I am just a semantic nut sometimes (other times I could care less, but when it comes to key doctrinal issues it makes a difference, for instance I despise the word DOUBT when people talk about their faith in the Church, searching is better). To better understand it you could look up the hebrew word and find a decent translation for it, I like Strong’s but whatever you like will be pretty similar I bet.

Getting back to the point, I was have seen the figure from historians who have studied it at about 3,000 over a 300 year period. No proof of this, just lectures in college.

Someone brought up the state has the right to execute which is killing, taking a life, so I responded to that. Sorry to have put myself into a debate which had already started.

Tea & Cake or Death, Tea & Cake or Death?

First, we should probably establish how many Inquisitions there were.
Torquemada - do not beg him for mercy. Torquemada - do not ask him for forgiveness. Let’s face it - you can’t Torquemada anything!

I never said this was right either. One was too many in this case as well. I still don’t understand why everyone wants to keep bringing up other comparisons. It doesn’t excuse the act or the comparison act.

I agree, it does not excuse it. Despite that, the Church is derided for having a part in this horrific act with little to no regard for the fact that the same was done to US many many times.

The history of the inquisition is something that few people read enough about to truly understand, but when it is understood, it cannot be claimed to have been perpetrated by the Church, at least not in the fashion it was actually performed.

Apparently I love comma splices too, in addition to ellipses…

Please remember that before any Protestant laid hands on a Catholic under Elizabeth, many hundreds of Protestants were killed under Mary I (Bloody Mary), and these included three saintly bishops, Archbishop Cranmer, and Bishops Ridley and Lattimer.

I don’t think we can count on virtue coming about as a result of religious affiliation. Those Catholics who advised Mary had as much blood on their hands as their Protestant successors.

I think that Mary I and Elizabeth I, burried together at Westminster Abbey, somehow symbolize the English genius for getting along.

Remember that the Church of England also celebrates St. Edward Campion. Blessed be his memory.
