My two oldest daughters and I wear mantillas to the NO mass. I wish we had access to the TLM but we don’t. I know of 1 or 2 others at our parish that also cover thier heads but that is about it. We also get alot of stares, but we do it out of respect and honor of our Lord.

When I first came back into the Church at 17 I began to wear the veil, but stopped within a few months because I was worried that other people thought that I was being holier-than-thou. I started back up again about a year later and do not regret it. If somebody thinks I’m doing it for prideful reasons that just shows me that they know they should be wearing it but prefer modern culture. I wear the veil whenever I’m in a Catholic church (I guess I should say when I’m in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or not.) This means Tridentine Mass, Novus Ordo, or alone at night before the Tabernacle. If I make an unexpected stop at a church and I don’t have a veil with me I ask my Guardian Angel to cover my head. Personally, I find that the people who tend to be against women covering their heads are the ones who claim to be focusing on Jesus and not the people. Not everyone, but a lot.

jabelltulsa, beautiful post.🙂

Since the first day I began attending and fell in love with the “extraordinary rite” back in June, one of first things that tugged at my heart was the sight of men entering the Church in jackets and ties, accompanied by a wife and daughters in veils, and children dressed up and behaving themselves.

The entire setting was almost breathtaking, and every individual aspect of the scene added up the sum of “worship”.

And I don’t mind telling you I think a woman is more “beautiful” while wearing a mantilla or viel and commands much more respect from me. As do the men and boys in jackets and ties.

.

And yes I wear a headcovering to the Pauline Mass. I don’t wear one because I look good in it. I wear one because I feel personally called to ear one when at Mass or in prayer.
I just ordered one. I’ve been feeling the call for a way. I’ve really resisted because I don’t want to stand out at my Pauline Mass. So, as soon as it gets here, I’ll start wearing one. I’m sure that I’ll feel uncomfortable for a while. But, if I’m feeling this interior nudge in this direction, there must be something God wants to teach me. So, I’ll definitely go with it!

I wore a chapel cap today to the Mass of the Assumption. I usually wear a scarf to daily Mass, a hat or chapel cap to Sunday N.O. and a mantilla to the TLM. Perhaps soon I will start wearing a mantilla to the N.O. A number of the ladies in my choir have expressed an interest in wearing mantillas. 👍

I wear a chapel cap to the church that I attend that has a quite reverent NO Mass and there are others that wear them (I also do whenever I go to Adoration), however when I go to the NO Mass nearest me that doesn’t have the reverent Mass and noone else who wears a headcovering at all I feel it might cause uncharitable thoughts and I don’t want to be the occasion for sin (maybe I’m just a “chicken”). Probably tho’ I could wear a scarf without dissension as it would be seen as possibly chemo related (they don’t know me hardly at all).
When I start getting a paycheck, I want to purchase a full mantilla.

I wear a Jewish headcovering from head-coverings by Devorah.com

Very simple and easy to wear - people notice it but I don’t stand out as I would with a hat or mantilla on. I have a white beaded one for summer and a black beaded one for winter. I’m back at the church I attended before Katrina and the only other lady to cover her head has returned to the area and she is in her late 80s (might even be in early 90s). I have never seen her in church without her head covered even when she was cleaning it - she was a member of the altar society that cleaned and took care of the church every week.

I do- (wear a mantilla or hat) and i would say from observation in my parish that out of 100 women none wear a headcovering. It is at times awkward and I do get stares sometimes but I do it only out of respect and love for our Lord. I also genuflect before recieving on the tongue- only 3 of 200 people (average genuflect) before receiving in my parish. What are your novus ordo parishes like? Thanks everyone!
The Church has specifically made it clear that no one is to genuflect before receiving Holy Eucharist in the Roman Rite - N.O. Mass. Doing so goes against the Church. Even though it may feel more natural to you, to me and to others, our first priority should be to show God that we love Him by being Obedient to His Church. Until the Church changes it, & they probably will eventually, we must not genuflect immediately before receiving Holy Eucharist.

As far as a head covering goes, you have to understand that if basically no one else is wearing one, you are making a spectical of yourself and not allowing others to focus on Jesus which is the whole reason for the Mass. If you feel you need to wear a head covering that do so either at a Latin Mass or in your private daily prayers.

You will understand in the future, if not now, after much prayer and sacrifice that it is most important to love God with a clear heart and with complete obedience to His Church even when you feel the Church is not Holy enough; not to stand out in a crowd and causing yourself to be a distractions to others who come to worship God. Do you really want to be the center of attention when the attention is to be focused on God? You probably have never thought of it that way, but that’s exactly what is happening. Speak to your Spiritual Father about the matter. If you do not have one, then ask your priest who you can go to for Spiritual Direction.

Unfortunately most at our parish receive in the hand. Very few even bow before receiving. Our family, genuflects and my two oldest receive while on thier knees. I would but I usually have the baby in my hands and wouldn’t be able to get up. LOL. I genuflect at the pew rail before going up to the priest.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I disagree. I think if you wear a headcovering as a personal act of piety, it shouldn’t matter what other people think. And, I think those who are distracted by a mantilla, scarf, hat or kerchief will probably be just as distracted by someone else’s attire.

I think wearing a headcovering is something a woman (who feels called to it) does for Jesus. It is silly to spend a lot of time worried what others think. In fact, that’s just vanity.

If you think wearing a headcovering would please Jesus, just do it. 🙂

It’s great that people find that veils and hats on women in church remind them to be devout and humble. But that’s not why it’s done.

It’s not because no Jewish woman would visit the Temple without her head covered, and it’s not because the tabernacle is veiled.

It’s because no decent woman of the ancient world – Jewish, Roman, or most other cultures – would go out in public without her head covered. They didn’t wear headcoverings indoors with friends and family, and so they started not wearing them indoors with the ecclesia, their brothers and sisters. St. Paul told them nope. His reasoning was that the angels are there in church, too, and they’re not so much our brothers and sisters; you’re still in public, so keep your stola on. You will note that the surrounding verses are also about decorum and formality being maintained in church.

So you can take it as a sign of humility and devotion, of course. But primarily, it’s a sign of formality, and that church is a public place.
Actually in a number of the traditions this comes down to us from it is the MARRIED (or once married) WOMEN WEAR HEAD COVERINGS while single women go bareheaded.

There are many Muslims here who wear hajibs.. Would that be acceptable for mass? Perhaps we should wear chapel veils in public as well to show our respect for Jesus publicly. My personal favorite in grade school, in times of emergency, was the kleenex affixed with bobby pins. We also wore beanies. The mantilla was worn for high mass, the lace caplet, beanie, or kleenex for daily mass. Kleenexes and beanies were for children only. When you were 12, you got to wear the mantilla as well as nylons. By that time you were old enough not to forget your chapel veil at home before going to mass.

Thanks for helping me remember the fun we used to have over this in grade school.🙂

Remember dipping your finger in the devotional candles to while away the time waiting in line for confession on Fridays? The goal was to see how many layers of wax you could accumulate on your finger without burning yourself.😛

I left a traditional group - moved - and my only choice for a while was a reverent NO mass. I wore my veil tied in the back sort of so I wouldn’t look like I was some kind of pious show-off - and it was fine. In this church everyone genuflects, there is silence mostly before mass if not the rosary - as far as NO goes it is really great. A few people stared and some of he older women (I am an older woman too) sort of sneered, you know, the sweatpants wearers, since I also NEVER go to mass in pants, always a skirt, but that was OK too. One other lady regularly wore a veil. I have been through a little corner of suffering to stay wtih tradition and the OLD mass, and it is not easy to live Tradition, and I will not give up the veil - I earned it. That’s really how I feel.

I want to add that that particular church has a very holy priest andtjat has SO MUCH to do with behavior.

Dear Marina,

You have given me food for thought here. I have begun to wear a mantilla about two years ago, along with my three young daughters as the result of a desire to conform with what I believe is a call from God to be a testament to the fact that womanhood, motherhood especially, must be more appreciated today. We need to return to the idea that a woman’s role is to be the medium through which God would bring new life into the world. We are to wear that veil to call attention to the fact that we do intend to cooperate with that call and that we understand that if we live in cooperation with His plan, miracles of creation are wrought within us! We are veiled as the tabernacle is veiled. The angels do not even have this privilege! Sometimes we need even to remind ourselves of this great responsibility because of the way society views motherhood as a happenstance, or even an obstacle or inconvenience. It is not my intention to replace Our Lord as the center of attention, only to show by my observance that I hear and understand my place in His design. Should I not do this simply because others look at me? I intend for others to look at me. Is it not a good thing to stand up and do what we think is correct even if we create discomfort for others? If this philosophy was applied in other areas of respect and worship it may even be scandalous! It is not a selfish or militantthing; we do not stand up and proclaim that all should observe this gesture, we only answer a call to stand as a witness to His design. Does this make sense? By the way, my spiritual father praised my family’s return to this observance.

thanks and God bless!

Why select a mantilla over simpler head coverings?
For me the mantilla, or chapel veil, has a dignity fitting the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Lace veils are still commonly used for First Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Thank you for your reply. It always fastinates me when people think that those who choose to wear a covering are looking for attention. We aren’t. We are trying to submit ourselves to God. Instead we get called names and demeaned by our own catholics. Why such angry and resentment? We don’t force it on anyone nor do we judge those who don’t wear them. We understand that to wear a covering is a calling and not something to be takenlightly. To wear a covering effects your whole person.

What i don’t understand is that for a first communion and wedding women will wear a veil when they receieve the Lord? Well why only those two days? Every time you go to mass your particapting in a wedding feast and you in Jesus’s physically presence. Shouldn’t you wear a veil for him just as you would wear a veil in front of the Pope? I just don’t understand some people’s thought processes.

I honestly believe that those who say the would be distracted by a covering would be distracted by anything. I would rather see a church with covered women who dress modestly then see the jeans, tank tops, short skirts, and the “look at me i am barely wearing any clothing” looks that we see right now.
