lizaanne, please don’t return innocent remarks with angry responses. :nope:

Let us just concentrate on the purpose of the thread.:grouphug:

:amen:
There was nothing innocent about that snide remark, and I personally take offense for myself and the other women on this thread who WERE having an innocent discussion before they were accused of vanity and not having their intentions in the right place.

The purpose of the thread is to discuss wearing a head covering to a NO Mass. Part of understanding the why and how of that for some women who have not covered before is what to wear and how to wear it, and how to feel comfortable doing so. Coming here and saying that it’s turning into a fashion statement is totally offensive to those of us who do cover our heads and happened to care what we look like in the process. This has nothing to do with vanity and fashion statements.

:)OK everyone. Charity break.

Auntie M, I think it is fine if we think the veils, chapel caps, scarves, hats, etc. with which we cover our heads are beautiful. They are pretty. Lace is pretty. Women like “pretty”. God apparently made us so we would like “pretty”.
But that is NOT why we cover. We cover because God has moved us to do so.

But will I think ill of you because you don’t cover? Nope. In fact, my attention during mass will not be on anyone but Our Lord and His word hopefully. And if covering helps that to happen then it’s a good thing for me to do so.

If one was really “sincere” about wearing one for the Glory of God, then the question of “How many” or what it looked like would not even come up in the discussion. God doesn’t look at your outside appearance. It’s what’s in your heart that counts.
I don’t know how I feel about this. I’ve admired the beautiful vestments of several priests. They like the garments, too, and often the garments were gifts upon being ordained. I don’t think the vestments are about vanity, but are instead for God, who does care about it, I think. I mean, a priest can celebrate mass wearing jeans if he is in some war zone somewhere, but if he isn’t, why not honor God with intricate, lovely vestments? I don’t think that is insincere and only about outside appearance.

I don’t know for sure how ladies view their headcoverings, but if they view them as for God, then of course they would choose them to be as beautiful as possible, I’d think. It would indeed be their way of reflecting their hearts, but it would be a good thing, like how kneeling reflects what is in our hearts, which someone could say it is an appearance thing, but still, what we do with our bodies does influence our hearts back again. The conformity between our hearts and our outside is healthy for us.

Dear, I was not showing disrespect. I was analyzing, and if you will read over these last few post, you may come to the same conclusion. “I have a very cute one”. I have a beautiful one" " My grndmother has so many beautiful veils" Cute and beautiful?

If one was really “sincere” about wearing one for the Glory of God, then the question of “How many” or what it looked like would not even come up in the discussion. God doesn’t look at your outside appearance. It’s what’s in your heart that counts. I honestly do not think God is keeping score on “How many”. Then should we. If you want to wear a veil, as I have said before…by all means wear one. But don’t try to judge another or “keep score” of who all do and don’t…
Nobody is trying to judge another or “keep score” of how many coverings we have or who does or doesn’t cover. You’ve made that up and are projecting it onto the ladies here.

In fact, you’re the one who’s doing the “judging”, by publically questioning the sincerity of other Catholic women in a discussion that you really, IMO, shouldn’t even be a part of. Start your own thread if you want to tear down women who cover their heads at Mass. That’s not what this thread is about.

Wait a minute everyone!

The question was - do you wear a headcovering to attend a Novus Ordo Mass?

Doesn’t anyone think that is important? The question implies that there is something inferior in the NO Mass. They are asking why would any woman wear a head covering (which is worn out of respect for our Dear Lord) to an inferior Mass.😊

Isn’t anyone else insulted by this inference?

I didn’t get that impression when I first read the thread (this thread is over a year old, though). I think the original poster thought wearing one was reverent and probably would be pleased at seeing more people do it. I didn’t get the impression that she scorned the idea of wearing one at the ordinary form. If I recall, she always wears one herself, so clearly she does so at the ordinary form as well, since I know she said in some post somewhere on this site that she always attends one or at least used to. She’d take if off if she meant what you think she possibly meant.

Also, I was briefly on the original thread (that’s why I’m still here), and I certainly had no bad view of the ordinary form in my head.

Maybe, though, it is possible that folks think that women who attend the ordinary form typically have received little example to understand reverence or, more likely, aren’t accustomed to wear hats/veils? Overall, I am more interested in the experiences of women attending the ordinary form with wearing headcoverings, since that is the arena where I would have to contend with wearing one, an arena where I might stand out if I were to wear one. (not planning on doing that at this time, though)

Well now - let’s just look at exactly what WAS said instead of making it up.
I do- (wear a mantilla or hat) and i would say from observation in my parish that out of 100 women none wear a headcovering. It is at times awkward and I do get stares sometimes but I do it only out of respect and love for our Lord. I also genuflect before recieving on the tongue- only 3 of 200 people (average genuflect) before receiving in my parish. What are your novus ordo parishes like? Thanks everyone!
I see nothing that implies the NO is an inferior Mass. It is a very simple question - she was only asking about what other parishes are like.

It always amazes me how folks can twist and mangle someone’s intent to be so sinister.

Of course I’m not insulted by an inference that never took place.

Nope. Because I saw no such inference. This is, again, something that someone has made up and is projecting onto the OP. There sure is a lot of that going on here lol.

No, I do not wear a headcovering to Novus Ordo Mass. I would wear one if that was the custom in the church I’m attending. Haven’t worn a covering since Vatican II.

Look, I am sorry that some posters seem to want to go on the defensive and be abusive about a question I asked. I am definitely not going to become involved in name calling.:o

Why was the question not just stated as “How many women here wear a head covering to Mass” instead of mentioning the Pauline Mass.

I don’t think it matters which Mass we attend; we should wear a head covering.:byzsoc:

I don’t remember receiving an explanation from my parish priests at the time of the changes. It just happened. We always wore headcoverings even if it was a hankie/tissue with a hairpin. Now nothing. There is only one woman I’ve seen wearing a headcovering.

My complaint is the removal of the Real Presence in the Tabernacle to another area of the church. Why? It should have always remained on the main altar. If there are priests out there who feel the same, why can’t they put the Tabernacle back where it belongs?

Getting back to dress for respect: There’s a Greek Orthodox church which prohits women from wearing pants. Must wear skirts or dresses. In my church, I’ve seen a woman in thigh length shorts serve communion, people in jeans, and an usher with a skull on this t-shirt.

I guessed that it was because women generally always cover at tradtional masses. The questionseems to be addressing how many women wear them at NO masses because most do not.
I don’t feel it is an insult. It’s a valid question.

I’m usually the only one at my NO parish as well. And I also get many odd looks. But then even if it’s 100 degrees outside I still wear a suit or dress. I explain it to people who question the way I dress up for church that one should never enter God’s presence uncovered and should always dress as though Jesus Himself might pull himself off the crucifix behind the altar, come down, shake the priest’s hand walk down the aisle and look me in the eye. I wouldn’t want to be underdressed for the occassion.

As for Communion, my husband (fourth and final) is in the annullment process and when that’s over we’ll have our marriage blessed and I’ll be able to take Communion.

There are on average three or so women who wear headcoverings at the Novus Ordo in my church, maybe a few more at the Latin Novus Ordo. I’ve worn one only a handful of times. It’s hard to keep it on, I find it to be a distraction, and I have enough distractions with the baby. It’s an additional distraction to feel like I’m sticking out in the crowd (which I already feel like I do because my husband does not accompany me to mass, so I’m a woman alone with a baby… ). I’ve been thinking about finding a better solution to the mantilla which although I think is very pretty, is a bit too eye catching. Whatever I end up doing, I have to make it so the baby doesn’t grab it and pull it off of my head…
Back in the days when we had to wear a mantilla I found a couple of hair pins on the top in an x position would help with that.

Nobody was being abusive here, unless you got some PMs that we can’t see. The reason the OP mentioned the Pauline Mass is because that was her question…It is a valid question, one I’ve had before myself. Frequently at the OF Mass I’ll be the only one who covers my head. At the TLM most of the ladies do it. When I first started wearing a headcover I did wonder about this too.

Have not worn one since late 60s. At first I felt uncomfortable going into church with out my head covered, but after a couple years, it was ok. I am fine not wearing one, but to each his own. I am usually too busy praying to notice what others are wearing.
