How much do you have to eat in order to be a glutton?

It’s not that I don’t eat that much but I can tend to get hungry and eat and eat…but in the past, my scrupulosity creeps up on me again thinking that I am a glutton and committed a sin, etc. and now I’m very careful to watch how much I eat.

Three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are okay I assume but what is the amount to be called a glutton?

Have you been under a doctor’s care for over eating?

How much do you weigh and how tall are you?

Oh for goodness sake…😛

I only asked a general question so one can answer! Not to tell how much I weigh and all that! No, I’m healthy.

Since everyone is different, there isn’t a standard of how much food is too much. People who are more active require more energy and therefore should eat more food. You should discuss with your doctor (who knows your health better than us) as to what is a good diet plan for you to follow.

If you think you are eating enough but still feel hungry, always try drinking water first. Most people are dehydrated to some extent and don’t know it. We often mistake thirst for hunger. You’d be surprised by how much an 8 oz. glass of water can do!

Gluttony is the over consumption of food, i don’t think it is measured in amout of food, but eating when you’re not hungary or for enjoyment. Not that you shouldn’t enjoy eating, but some people eat just because they like the taste or have a little to much fun.

Are you saying I can’t play with my food and make volcanoes with my mashed potatoes and gravy and the such?!?!?!

No guys, I’m not asking because I need a doctor…all I’m asking is how much so the people here and myself can be aware…make sense?😃

For example, let’s say someone has a bowl of cream of wheat for breakfast for breakfast, then at noon has a meat and cheese sandwich, then eats an apple at 4:00pm then has dinner around 7 or so with hamburgers then eats dessert before bed around 9:00 and it’s cheesecake, does that mean they are a glutton? Or if you eat 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners? This is what I’m trying to ask.

My understanding is that gluttony is more or less when you go so far as to put food, in a certain sense, in place of God. People tend to say things like, ‘well that’s ridiculous nobody would actually put food in place of God,’ but its not so much a direct act as it is and indirect one.

This is better understood a different way. In our lives, our one true end, or goal, is God. Sin is when we place other things as our end, as our goal in life. It’s almost as though we are on a long path, the end of which is God. Venial sins are those sins by which we might stop along the path to look at something interesting on the side of the path. They are things that distract us from God. Mortal sins, on the other hand, are those sins where we actually walk off the path onto a different path that has something different at the end.

Glutonny is not something as simple as eating a bunch of food. It is when a person is so concerned with food that they make it, in a certain sense, their goal in life. Wheras we are meant to live our lives with our focus on God and leaving all other things to be side notes, a glutton is one whom in a sense lets food be the focus of his life.

A person who is hungry a lot is not a glutton. A person who has a few snacks during the day is not a glutton. A lot of people even eat out of boredom. While it is possible, even these people are not usually gluttons. What you described certainly doesn’t sound anything like gluttony.

Thank you. That’s what I was trying to get at.

And since I didn’t know much about glutton “stuff” I had to ask, but now I know. Thank you again.🙂

well, too bad if you’re a chef.

I know people who talk about food, plan thefood they are going to eat, talk recepies, dream about food, look for new and different dishes to eat, grab opportunities to be invited for a meal never mind if they hardly know the person who gave the invite… thats gluttony I guess.

Lazerlike,

What a GREAT description of mortal vs. venial sin this is! Thanks so much. (I’m copying it out and putting it in my RCIA materials).

👍

Catholic Encyclopedea definition of Gluttony:

" A sin against temperance, it is either the excessive and uncontrolled desire for food or drink, or the extreme and excessive use of food or drink. Gluttony also includes the excessive liking for exquisite food and drink and fastidiousness about food and drink. Excessive drinking is a venial sin if it causes partial loss of reason, and it is mortally sinful if it causes complete loss of reason."

I would say when you get obese without a health reason, that would be a sign of gluttony. Also, if you are secretly binging just for the pleasure of food, as I sometimes do for unknown reasons, that would be gluttony, I would think. When food stops becoming fuel for your body (moderate jnk food included) and starts becoming unhealthy or used only for your own pleasure, that is probably gluttony, not when you’re really hungry and eat.

if you eat when you are hungry, that is normal. If you eat way past the point of being satisfied to the point of gorging yourself or even of having to vomit in order to eat more, that is gluttony. That assumes such a person has full use of free will. If a person has a psychological disorder, that might impair free will. There is no law about how many times a day to eat, many doctors think 6 small meals is better than 3 large meals. For that you would go by your doctor’s advice if you have a medical condition where diet plays a role.

If you have a problem with scrupulosity, as you have mentioned before, these questions about possible sins should be taken to the priest in confession, you should find a good priest who knows your problem and stick with him. A person who struggles with scrupulosity should never ask others, particularly strangers, to advise him about personal sin or temptations. That is the universal advice of classic spiritual directors.

It isn’t a quantity issue, some matabolism are faster than others and they need to eat more. It comes down to eating when you know you’re hungary or waiting to the nearest meal, it’s just not eating large quatity of food out of boredom or something. Like last night I was hungary at dinner and ate a little more than I should have because I was hungary earlier but not when I ate more, that would be gluttony if I did that on a regular basis.
