How much do you have to eat in order to be a glutton?

I could be wrong, but I think the gravity of the sin depends on how much you are overeating. I think most “ordinary” overeating would be venial, but if someone is making themselves morbidly obese by deliberately overeating by a huge amount, I suppose that could be mortal. I imagine refusing to fast when you are supposed to, or letting food and eating get in the way of something you’re supposed to be doing would constitute gluttony as well, and the gravity of it would depend on the importance of the thing you were failing to do.

Hi Paris it has to do with desire ( gal 5 ) and killing the sin nature daily ( rom 12 ).

But, calorie intake

Women: 100 pounds for the first 5 feet of height plus 5 pounds for each additional inch.

Men: 106 pounds of body weight for the first 5 feet of height plus 6 pounds for each additional inch.

For a small body frame, 10% should be subtracted. For a large frame, 10% should be added.

CALORIES FOR WEIGHT MAINTENANCE
To maintain one’s weight, the following formula can be used:

10 Calories per pound of desirable body weight if the person is sedentary or if they are very obese.

13 Calories per pound of desirable body weight for low activity level, or after the age of 55 years.

15 Calories per pound of desirable body weight for moderate activity.

18 Calories per pound of desirable body weight for strenuous activity.

Activity levels:

Low activity: No planned, regular physical activity; occasional weekend or weekly activity is the only type of physical activity (like golf or recreational tennis).

Moderate activity: Participation in physical activity like swimming, jogging, or fast walking, 30 - 60 minutes each time.

Strenuous activity: Participation in vigorous physical activity for 60 minutes or more at least 4 - 5 days per week.

So a man who is 5’10" should ideally weigh 106 lbs plus 6 * 10 about 166 lbs ( how many men you know fit this? )

to maintian that weight and not be very active would require about 1660 calories per day. For that person to lose weight they would have to increase their activity and cut back on calories. So, if they moved up to the next level of activity they could get away with a 1500 calories diet. One of those very large cholocate bars is about 660 calories, so one eathing two of those bars can only have a salad or bag of popcorn for rest of the day.

Fact is American culture eating wise is unhealthy and we all need to retrain ourselves.

First: Get off the guilt trip.
Second: Make good choices to increase activity and eat a balance diet.
Third: firgure out how many calories you need and retrain your eathing habits. avoid places that make you overeat. Many food stores like ____________ purposely release the smell of cooking foods in the store to make you want that extra snack.
fourth: kill the sinful nature daily Romans 12
fifth: change friends if need be to get away from those who have not gotten on the health train as of yet.

If you are eating, no matter how little, purely for pleasure or sheerly to indulge an urge of the flesh, it is gluttony. Now, you do not need to explicitly have this motive before your mind when you eat, as long as it is virtually contained by accepting the foods nutritive value. One may certainly enjoy food, and that may even be their immediate motive, as long as they do not exclude the nutritive motive.
** It is incontrovertible that to eat or drink for the mere pleasure of the experience, and for that exclusively, is likewise to commit the sin of gluttony.** Such a temper of soul is equivalently the direct and positive shutting out of that reference to our last end which must be found, at least implicitly, in all our actions.* At the same time it must be noted that there is no obligation to formerly and explicitly have before one’s mind a motive which will immediately relate our actions to God.* It is enough that such an intention should be implied in the apprehension of the thing as lawful with a consequent virtual submission to Almighty God.
From the Catholic Encyclopedia article on gluttony: newadvent.org/cathen/06590a.htm

Another fun little tidbit:
This deordination, according to the teaching of the Angelic Doctor, may happen in five ways which are set forth in the scholastic verse: “Prae-propere, laute, nimis, ardenter, studiose” or, according to the apt rendering of Father Joseph Rickably: too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily."
“Prae-propere, laute, nimis, ardenter, studiose:
too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily.”

;)I think that’s cute.

Ok, so just eat cheap food late at night, and be a slob about it! 😃
