This is a hypothetical question. This is only for Eastern Catholics. Lets say that all of a sudden for no reason the Pope dissolved all Eastern Catholic Churches and made them abide by the Roman Rite. What would you do? Would you stay in the Roman Catholic Church or leave?

It’s really not a possibility. But if it were I would assume that the RC had fallen into heresy and the only option would be to Dox.

Interesting, so you only stay with Rome as long as it teaches the orthodox faith. Who’s authority is it to say that it holds the true faith?

I’m just being hypothetical remember.

That’s a no brainer. Most are 65 plus (at least in the U.S.) and would probably go Latin. They have been Catholic all their lives, and want to be buried Catholic. They grew up in a Latinized Byzantine church, and have the mindset of Catholic first , Byzantine second. Orthodox? No Way! I’m not a Katsop!

Some of the younger people might do the same, or convert to Orthodoxy if they absolutely refuse to give up Eastern Christianity.

.

For me this is kind of like asking what we would do if Rome repudiated the Trinity. The Pope can’t dissolve the Eastern traditions, any more than he can dissolve the Middle Ages, or the Church Fathers, or World War II, or the conversion of Europe.

Peace and God bless!

No, that is not what I’m saying. I believe both Rome and Orthodoxy have erred. The true pattern is found in the Church that existed prior to 1054 and exists now in the Eastern Catholic Churches. Since the popes recognize that a multiplicity of sui juris churches can exist in communion with one another and that Orthodoxy teaches orthodox faith then we happily remain in communion. Should any pope, which again I assert is not possible, should ever deny such a communion the assumption would be that this pope had fallen into grave error. It seems obvious to me then that the only option would be to Dox…unless we could wait him out.

I bow to your superior wisdom. You have written what I should have written. Thank you.

He never would, so the question is moot.

You may have bad “hearing”.

CDL
Not at all. I have excellent hearing. As a teacher I have to be able to hear every little thing that goes on in my classroom.
BTW, picking and choosing your beliefs, personal interpreatation of revelation… that’s the essence of protestantism.

Apparently, we have not frequented the same Eastern Catholic Churches.

I agree 100% but I think the point of the question was that if Rome decided that it no longer recognized the tradition of the Byzantines or the Orientals and that all Christians must accept the tradition of the Latins what would you do. The pope can’t dissolve the tradition of the east but he could certainly return to the attitude of popes like Benedict XIV who basically thought to be Catholic was to be Latin and the Eastern Churches were lower forms of Christianity. The goal of the popes before was basically to make the Eastern Churches latin in every respect.

I would probably join the Oriental Orthodox Church myself if Rome decided to go back to the approach - complete latinization - of the past popes.
Sounds protestant to me.
Sounds like a typical Latin Catholic.

I’m not sure what I’d do, honestly. The Orthodox and Catholic Communions would then be deficient and not representative of the true Apostolic Church. 😊

In what way do you mean they would both be deficient? Do you mean simply that they would not be truely Catholic because they are completely closed in on their own culture and perspective?

I have read about the Western Schism. Its really no reaon to deny the Catholic faith.
You missed my point. Who took authority over the papacy? Same with Otto. I’m trying to get you to do some research and to think through these things before you make claims you cannot sustain as I believe you have in the recent past.

Again, we agree.

No. I have read about the western schism. I know it what a complicated issue where we simply had trouble determining who was the Pope. But that does not mean we should deny the teahings of the Church as so many East Catholics like to do now days. If the the Catholic Church is in error, then the promises of Christ are void and Christianity is false. I am trying to get you to do some thinking here.
