How much Liberals love the Church!

In my experience, liberals hide behind the Church to soften their un-Godly beliefs. If they loved the Church, they would be faithfully obedient to its teachings. This kind of Catholic we do not need, until they have repented and are ready to truly follow and obey God.

I can’t speak for those born before Vatican II, but I know that an “overwhelming majority” of those born after the council feel like children who lost our birthright. I don’t think we can overlook the dismay. As pious mentioned above, terrible things have happened.
I doubt we could say the “overwhelming majority” of us feel like we have lost our birthright, though a significant majority of orthodox Catholics (myself included) certainly do - the rest just haven’t ever been told about their birthright in order to know that they have been defrauded of it. Still, are we going to get angry, or get even? Righteous anger might fuel the push for getting even, but continuously spouting anger won’t get us across the finish line.

I completely agree with you, we have to pray for greater faith, but we also have to work for it, that means studying the bits of our faith that we don’t yet understand or have questions about, and carrying on studying them until we do.
Right. I actually started to mention that in my last post but ended up removing it.

Well, it sort of depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you want to drive people away from the beauty of tradition, present this tradition in a cloak of anger and dismay. If you wish to bring people back to this tradition become excellent examples of that beauty.

Always keep firmly fixed in your mind that God is more than capable of dealing with those who wish to harm His beloved Church. It is important to understand what our role is. As I said before, as a musician, I believe that my role is to present to the best of my abilities and understanding what is beautiful.

I do know that anger, sarcasm and fear will work against the goals of bringing all the people to a closer union with tradition.
Why do you say that?
Because people no longer have any backbone?
Because people can no longer take criticism?
Because people are too proud to swallow the bitter pill of humility?
Because most people have been led to believe that their individual rights as human beings trumps all else, **even God? **

Sadly, the modern Church forgot to teach the beautiful truths of the Faith and of Tradition. They have been too busy all these long years teaching the New Theology of modern man.

At times I don’t know whether to fight on or to give up. I will continue to pray for all those poor souls whose minds remain clouded in error and who cannot yet grasp the truth.

You say that God is more capable of dealing with those who wish to harm the Church? That is more modern tripe. God can and will allow bad things to happen as we have witnessed. God does not reward evil but rather He will show His wrath and man will reap his just punishment.

Let me give you a scenario. Let’s say that you have a group of militant pro-lifers. The Pope and Bishops are not only NOT fighting abortion, or even resisting it, but saying nothing but positive things about the pro-abort doctors. The things they are saying about the pro-abort doctors are not necessarily wrong, but inappropriate and misleading. And further, the Pope and Bishops are visiting abortion clinics on a regular basis and are nothing but smiles as they walk through. While they may not openly say they are in favor of abortion, their actions lead people to believe they are. They are constantly saying how clean the abortion clinics are and how well maintained they are with the latest equipment, etc… The abortions doctors are the regular guests of honor at their events and no one mentions the abortions - of if they do it is merely to say “sure, we may disagree on abortion, but there are many other things we agree on, and we prefer to focus of what unites, rather than what divides”.

The average Catholic in the pew (who was never taught the faith) is watching this and becomes completely indifferent toward abortion. When some angry pro-lifer stands up in defense of the unborn, the average Catholic calls them a schismatic and tells them that the Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true in the abortion movement.

Now, what will the reaction of the pro-life Catholics be to this deceptive indifference? Answer: They will quite naturally become angry. Their anger will be both justified and reasonable. Nevertheless, even though their anger is just and reasonable, their is a danger. The anger, which again is just and reasonable, can become “second nature” to them since they are constantly faced with this deception from those around them. The danger is that this can eventually harm their souls.

The situation is the same with the Traditionalists. They see the Pope (especially John Paul II) and Bishops praising false religions and not defending or protecting the faith. Just as the pro-lifers became angry at the obvious deception so too do the Traditionalists.

One of the dangers of having the faith during the great apostasy that we are living through is becoming angry and bitter. It is almost the natural response - the response of a reasonable person - yet this natural response can harm the soul.

What is the solution? What is the proper reaction? I would say firstly humility. Ask God: God why have you given me the true faith in this day of apostasy when it appears that even ‘Rome has lost the faith and become the seat of the Antichrist’? Is it, Lord, because you want me to preserve the faith and return glory to you in this day? Why did you chose me with all of my sins? Surely there were others more worthy of this gift."

We should begin with similar thoughts. Then, rather than being surprised when others cannot see the truth that we present to them (which might make us irritated), we should be more surprised when someone does see it, since we are living in the great apostasy. Then we should humbly pray for those we come in contact with, at least as our way of thanking God for giving us the gift of faith. We should not focus so much on producing fruits of converting others (since this is actually not in our control), but rather in producing fruits of holiness within ourselves.

Lastly, we should actually try to love the trials and difficulties that come with having the faith in this day of apostasy. When one’s eyes are open, it brings with it many more sufferings. We can unite these to the sufferings of our Lord “for His Body’s sake, which is the Church”. There is a reason God give some the real faith in these days, along with the ability to see the truth. If we can defend the faith, let us do so without getting angry at others.

This, I believe, is what God would have us do. While it is certainly easier said than done, at least if we are aware of it we can strive to practice it - and that in itself will be pleasing to God.

Why do people confuse anger with standing up for what is right and defending Truth?

Again it goes back to what I said in my last post, people today can’t take correction…they just simply cannot handle it…they have been used to living their faith the way that they themselves believe is the right way, in a nutshell man has made himself God.

The last few generations have produced weak, spineless, and confused Catholics. They have traded their faith and logical thinking for the sentimental, corny, misconceptions of what being Catholic really is, with a massive dose of political correctness and tolerance of error and evil to go along with it.Those who love the Church now need to step up to the plate and defend tradition. They need to spurn and reject the errors. To sit by and participate in that which is not Catholic is sinful, and each Catholic has a duty to refuse to accept that which goes against the faith. There is enough information out there which is readily available to anyone who seeks to find it, that to feign ignorance is no longer a valid excuse.

Yes, and that cuts both ways.

As I said before, I’d love to know how many people you’ve managed to bring to the discussion with your “cut 'em off at the knees” approach, much less how many have rejoined the fold because of it.

It’s not a matter of whether people can take correction. It’s a matter of how that correction is presented. I’ll stick with Jesus’s approach, knowing first hand that it works.

I can’t find anywhere in scripture or in the Catechism where your approach is recommended. The only time in all of the gospels that Jesus gets upset is when the moneychangers are putting obstacles in the way of the poor being able to “access” God, and when the Pharisees put heavy loads on people thinking themselves righteous. God doesn’t seem to much care for people making it difficult to seek Him.

Peace,

Why do people confuse anger with standing up for what is right and defending Truth?
I wasn’t confusing anger with standing up for the truth, and neither was I saying that anger per say was wrong. Anger is not an effect of original sin. It is one of the passions that God gave us - and He gave it to us for a reason. It has its place and is very useful.

My point was, and is, that given the situation that we find ourselves in today, it is easy for those who have the faith to become too angry and bitter. The biggest danger of being a Catholic today is losing the faith; and I would say that the biggest danger of having a strong faith today is becoming too angry and bitter. I’m not saying you have fallen into this, but if you examine yourself I bet you will see the tendency present. And the reason I am so familiar with this “tendency” is because I have to fight it myself.
Again it goes back to what I said in my last post, people today can’t take correction…they just simply cannot handle it…
I agree completely.
they have been used to living their faith the way that they themselves believe is the right way, in a nutshell man has made himself God.
Again, I agree completely. But keep in mind that the reason most Catholics are liberals is because this is what they have been taught. They have been taught a watered down version of the faith, and as such have a watered down faith Pius IX said “a Liberal Catholic is the worst enemy of the Catholic Church”, and today Liberal Catholics make up virtually the entire hierarchy.
The last few generations have produced weak, spineless, and confused Catholics.
I agree 100%.
They have traded their faith and logical thinking for the sentimental, corny, misconceptions of what being Catholic really is, with a massive dose of political correctness and tolerance of error and evil to go along with it.
Again, I agree completely, and I am just as disgusted by it as you are - and I bet I fight it as much as you (or more).

Again, I agree with you completely. My only point is that one of the dangers of having the faith today is becoming too angry and bitter. It was just a bit of friendly advice for you to keep an eye out for.

Take tradito.com for example. Are you familiar with him? Years ago he was a balanced voice. Today he has fallen off the deep end, and I watched him go through this. It appeared to me to be due to too much anger, which eventually turned into bitterness.

I don’t claim to be the model in how to react in this crisis (when arguing against Liberals), but I think I am correct in alerting you to a potential danger.

I am glad that we are in so much agreement then. I am not bitter, nor am I angry…I am however, seeing more clearly with every passing day, that many souls need many prayers, and things are not getting better, they are getting worse. Perhaps a dose of the truth in strong words is just the thing to spur confused and lukewarm souls into waking up. We don’t have the time to be complacent, that has been going on for forty to fifty years now and it has resulted in a watered down faith and the Church has fallen further and further into disarray and apostasy. You know, there are those who can’t handle the truth, and there are those that can. You don’t avoid saying the truth, even if weakling souls can’t bear to hear it, otherwise, you will be guilty of bowing down to human respect. The only respect you need to pay, is to God and to the truths of His Church as established here on earth by Our Lord Jesus Christ.

To say that “liberals” can not love the Church, is to place oneself in the position of God. One human being can not know the heart and soul of another person. A human being has no authority whatsoever to state what another human being feels.
No one said they “can’t” love the Church. It was said they “don’t” love the Church. And saying so has nothing to do with placing oneself in the position of God. Please let’s be reasonable. It’s merely making and observation and forming an opinion. As to no human being having authority whatsoever to state what another human being feels, I suggest you look up the meaning of the word empathy.

I just wanted to put forward a perspective that has slowly dawned on me over the past few weeks. It’s a perspective I never imagined I’d ever have.

My goodness, do liberal Catholics love the Church! They love it more than a traditionalist like me could ever imagine.

From the moment of my conversion experience, the Lord has given me a supernatural gift to believe everything the Church teaches, all of it, 100 per cent. I didn’t make it happen, He did, it’s called the gift of faith. It’s easy to love the Church when you believe everything she teaches. It’s easy to love the Church when you can see the good God is bestowing on the world through her.

But those liberals - they love the Church even though they don’t agree with her. Even though the words of the Pope or the words of the hierarchy drive them crazy, they keep coming, they keep showing up for Mass, keep clinging on. They keep getting involved, looking after children’s groups, worship groups, playing as full a part as they can as lay people, even though they know they’ll never be in charge because of the way the Church is governed. They love their priests even though the priests try to make them bend in a direction they don’t want to go. Often, they criticise the Church because they love it so much, they might not know what’s best, but they can only see the Church through their own eyes, so they’ll say what they see and hope that others see it too. Sometimes, often, very often, they’ll be wrong, but that doesn’t make such boldness any less admirable. Even when the Church doesn’t make their lives out in the real world make sense, and their lives don’t make the Church make sense, they carry on, through that confusion, they’re still Catholic.

Like the gentile woman who Jesus insults and sends away, they keep begging Him and clinging to His Church, even though the Church seems to tell them that they’re not really her children. Like the disciples, they are scandalised by the Church in so many ways, but still can say ‘Lord, to whom shall we go, you alone have the words of eternal life’. That is incredible devotion, that is a side of the gift of faith that I’ll never know.

What peace liberals would know if they had more wisdom, but what love and devotion and trust us traditionalists would know if we could embrace their realism, their trust, their hope in the face of uncertainty.

Yeah, I never thought I’d write in praise of liberal Catholics, but there it is. 👍

Is Liberalism a Sin?
Victor R. Claveau, MJ

At any given time, disease germs seeking an environment in which to grow and destroy, assault our bodies. These germs look for people, whose immune systems have been weakened or depleted in order that they might propagate their own kind, undermining and sometimes destroying the health of its host. The only safeguard against the onslaughts of this enemy is a vigorous and healthy body with an adequate immune system to drive back the invader.

The same is true if we are subject to an infectious attack against the spiritual order. The Evil One and his minions are constantly looking to exploit our spiritual weaknesses; ready to destroy the weakened soul. To escape, our power to resist must be greater than the power of the attack. We must possess an interior spiritual strength to drive off the evil. There must be no place in the soul that is not filled by Christ.

Not only must we be alert to evils of the flesh, but the enemy will also try to make inroads through the intellect, disguised to deceive the unwary or imprudent. The Trojans open their city gates to their enemy under the impression that they were actually securing a valuable gift which would secure their safety and today their fatal experience has come down to us in the proverb:
”Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.” Intellectual sluggishness, inexperience, ignorance, indifference, or even virtues such as benevolence, generosity, and pity may be the unsuspecting way to open to the enemy. Then we are surprised when the adversary is in command of the castle.

I was very intrigued by the title of this thread. Immediately, a few notable Democratic (clearly more liberal than conservative) politicians came to mind. They knowingly go against the Church and Her teachings, and continually use our Church as the crutch/reason they go against it! I heard one quoted the other day saying something like “MY Church teaches me to take care of the poor” when they were justifying going directly against a church teaching. Clearly they must be proud of some aspect of the Church to be “flaunting” Her as the basis for why they are not following the Church’s teachings. Ironic, to me at least. They love to point to the history of their family in the Church, to growing up as an altar boy, or doing this or that with the Church. They clearly love something about the Church, perhaps its all the truth contained within! It’s too bad that the love they have of identifying as being Catholic doesn’t translate into believing the truth and following the teachings. So thank you to the OP for presenting your perspective. I felt you did so in a fair non-offensive and loving way.

On another side-note…After reading through the thread, filled with some pretty harsh comments from people, one of my first thoughts was thank God that neither the “Liberal Catholics” nor the “Traditionalists” will be deciding my eternal fate.

The fact that Liberals keep on coming is indeed comforting. As our Lord said he did not come into this world to save the belivers but the sinners and non believers of course not in so many words.Liberals belong to different categories. Some particularly multireligous communities wish to be modern and often state that the Church does not change and is old fashioned. Some have a sense of loyalty and will even defend the Church although they do not belive in the basics. There are also some who think it as some sort of membership of a club which can do no harm and enjoy the fellowship.Since they are within our reach and the reach of the Parish clergy we should endeavour to reach out to them.I agree some of us has faith bestowed on us by the Holy Spirit and we should be thankful but others could acquire faith by observing the examples of ones neighbours. The strategy of the Fundamentalist is that they pounce on such Christians in times of adversity and win them over to their way of thinking by kindness and perhaps lending a patient ear to their sufferings.

Amen.

As a self-described “liberal” who indeed does love the church, even the things I may not “agree” on (it’s possible, give it a try), I’m finding the tone of this thread to be full of self-pride.

He said pridefully:)

Liberal christians? Your either for Jesus Christ, all the way or your not there at all!

Jesus did it all for you on the cross when He said, “It is finished.”
so, when your finished thinking over where you are ,Jesus always is waiting. 🙂

The Christian is called to adhere to Christ and His teaching integrally; the unity of faith is the dominant motif of divine revelation on which St. Paul insists energetically, when he writes:
Code:
* 1 Cor. 1:10. I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no schisms among you: but that you be perfect in mind and in the same judgement.

Am a bit dubious about the ‘Dogmas’ contained in this list. Only a quick skim, but I saw this:

“14. The dead will rise again with the same bodies as they had on earth.”

That’s not what 1 Cor 15 says. We will rise with glorified bodies, not the bodies we had on earth.

For a site that’s so concerned about correct Dogma, it’s surprising that it doesn’t have an Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat.

Not complaining about Dogma, not complaining about people trying to defend Dogma, all good motives, just a bit dubious about this particular source.

General Resurrection
tt=63

Resurrection is the rising again from the dead, the resumption of life. The Fourth Lateran Council teaches that all men, whether elect or reprobate, “will rise again with their own bodies which they now bear about with them” (cap. “Firmiter”). In the language of the creeds and professions of faith this return to life is called resurrection of the body (resurrectio carnis, resurrectio mortuoram, anastasis ton nekron) for a double reason: first, since the soul cannot die, it cannot be said to return to life; second the heretical contention of Hymeneus and Philitus that the Scriptures denote by resurrection not the return to life of the body, but the rising of the soul from the death of sin to the life of grace, must be excluded. (We shall treat of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in a separate article; here, we treat only of the General Resurrection of the Body.)
