Praying in tongues today, is, made up gibberish. There are no translators.

Stick to the original church. Stick with Jesus.

Saint Paul said in romans 8. The natural mind fights against the spirit

Speaking in tongues, though, does not always require an interpretation. If the message is for the whole congregation, then yes, there must be an interpretation, and then the Giver of the Gift, who is God himself, will give the interpretation. But in the charismatic churches I’ve been in, both Catholic and non-Catholic, speaking or singing in tongues is usually part of the worship service, and each person just sings or prays in the spirit. Then a quiet time ensues, in which the Lord may choose to speak a word of encouragement or knowledge through one or two particular people, and in my experience, this has always been in English, so the whole congregation can understand.

A person can also pray in tongues. They may be praying for an intention they know nothing about, and do not need to know about…but the Lord knows, and He knows the need. We do not need to know, therefore a translation is not provided either.
I once looked out of my window and saw a group of nuns walking by. I started praying for them out loud in English, but the Spirit took over and for about two minutes I prayed in tongues. This was the Lord’s doing—He knew the particular things they needed prayer for–I did not know. How do I know what I said? I don’t know…How did I know I wasn’t praying against them or possibly calling down curses upon them that were actually from Satan? (as some have suggested about this ‘gift’) Because I have given my life to Christ and His Spirit lives in me, so I would trust in I Corinthians 12:3 “Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed’…”

These are some of St. Paul’s words from I Corinthians chapter 14 about speaking tongues in church–It’s worth reading the whole chapter. (Here, he is not speaking about the Pentecost experience where people understood the message in their own language, as that is different and for a different purpose. ) …
“I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”

Why would God want a person to utter sounds that that person does not understand? There is no logic in it.

Tongues was for those who needed to hear the Gospel in their own native language.

Someone sitting in their own room, uttering complete gibberish knows not what is being said! It could very well be from an evil source.

Why would God want someone to utter gibberish?

There are writings by the Vatican regarding the Catholic Charismatic movement. And this movement professes speaking and praying in tongues. And being receptive to any gifts of the Holy Spirit. Go look.

First thing you will find is Holy Father being prayed for, in tongues
I can find a video of a pope kissing the Koran and shaking hands with those in same sex marriages, irregular marriages, etc. Because the Holy Father is polite with people does not mean that the Church finds what they are valid or authentic.

Charismatic has some very good things. Gibberish is not one of them.

"For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”

St. Paul didn’t consider speaking in Tongues as speaking gibberish, but saw a purpose to it and said that he was thankful that he spoke in tongues more than all the others. (from 1Corinthians chapter 12)

Just because we might not understand the words doesn’t mean that God doesn’t.

We’re free to believe or to be skeptical. But one of the main founders of the faith, and from whose letters we hear from on most Sundays sure believed, so I don’t personally see how it can all be dismissed as worthless or as falsehood.

It can be hard to believe the scripture on tongues and spiritual behaviors deemed as good.

I think you mean 1 Corinthians Chapter 14.

Reading the entire chapter, St Paul is instructing that the gibberish sort of speaking is not instructive, compares it to drums or other musical instruments that have only an emotional impact.

Verse 19 is very pointed “19 But in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

The interesting thing about praying in tongues for personal edification.

In the beginning. You natural mind will keep telling you that “this is foolish”

As your spiritual mind is getting edified

You do describe what you do understand.

An intellectual understanding of prophecy is different than

being prophetic by an anointing from the holy spirit
Sometimes it is a portal or energy flow that manifests. During a prophetic event or word.

As Jesus said “who touched me” because he recognized that the anointing energy went out of him.

This is a normal spiritual experience. And it is Not emotional or a feeling.
It is a form of spiritual decernment

praying in tongues in the spirit.

Tongues and interpretation

Tongues for personal edification
Forty years ago, when I was a teen, I was involved with the Charismatic movement and prayed in tongues. However, I was always a little doubtful of the authenticity of the gift and thought it might rather be the result of peer pressure.

I’ve prayed in tongues for personal edification maybe10 times as an adult, still doubting its authenticity.

To be honest, I don’t believe anyone prays in tongues. I think it is ALL made up or comes from a source other than God.
I agree. I was once in a prayer group where we were encouraged to “let go” of our inhibitions and babble whatever nonsense we could come up with out loud. It seemed very faked.

I thought the actual gift of tongues was about being able to miraculously speak and understand foreign languages etc.

To be honest I’d rather say the rosary. I think that is a more effective prayer and better than babbling something that I don’t understand and has no real meaning.

To say people praying in tongues is gibberish is incredibly insulting and disrespectful to those who do.

Have we forgotten our CAF rules? Are we all intent on creating a thoroughly divisive forum.

Thousands of Catholic Charismatics , including clergy, pray in tongues.

The Old CAF was home to one of the original group whose fruit is the Catholic Charismatic movement.

People are entitled to give an opinion based on their experience. It’s not targeted at anyone specifically. If you find it offensive there’s not much I can do about that. In my opinion the whole thing is very much based on emotion and stoking up an emotional “experience with the Holy Spirit”. The problem is that in reality we don’t always feel emotionally elated in the practice of our faith.

Yes our natural mind and intelligence may not accept what the scripture clearly says.
Praying in tongues might be similar to the sounds of a fax machine.

You have the right to be offended. I have the right to say that I think this is rubbish. If people are offended so easily then perhaps an internet discussion forum is not the place to be.
