How often is the Confiteor said at your Parish?

I honestly have no idea how often we pray the Confiteor. Our priests use all of the options for the Penitential Rite, but what the breakdown is for each of the options…I don’t know.

We also pray the St. Michael prayer after Mass, along with “O Sacrament Most Holy”.

My parish prays the St. Michael prayer after each daily mass (led by the priest) and BEFORE each Sunday Mass (led by the Cantor).
That is wonderful!!!
Yeah, but I wish we would do the St. Michael prayer after mass (before the processional each Sunday with the Priest, like we do with daily mass).

I think doing before mass is a little awkward… but then again, at least we do it on Sundays 🙂

It is said at every Mass as well as the Kyrie which is always sung. We also say the St Michael prayer after Mass every time.

I should always be said at every mass before the Kyrie. That’s a part of the liturgy. We confess our sins to prepare ourselves to receive the Word and the Eucharist, then sing the Kyrie. It is a vital part in clearing out our hearts of venial sins, reminding us about our duties, but mortal sins must be done through confession.

I have heard some churches that have been very liberal with the liturgy, adding and taking things away, which really disrupts the unity of the Catholic Churches. I am sure the confiteor is necessary on regular occasions.

No, the absolution is always part of the Mass. The Confiteor, however, is only one of three valid options for the Penitential Act.
Edit: Penitential Act, not communal penance obviously. English is not my first language.

Oh I mixed up. I actually meant the Penitential Act is necessary. Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

No worries. As you can see I also used the wrong terminology. 😅 “Confiteor” is Latin for “I confess” and it refers to the first form of the Penitential Act, where the whole congregation admits their sins and asks for the intercession of the saints.

I even confused the prayers. The Confiteor is a different prayer that I mixed up with the mea culpa, which is what I am used to, saying the mea culpa then singing the Kyrie.

Well, the Mea culpa is also part of the Confiteor. How does the Mea culpa go without the rest of the Confiteor?

I’m just full of confusion. It is the same thing haha. I was just googling an earlier version of the Confiteor, which appeared to be different, so I thought they were different.

There’s the 9th century one, but the current one is below that. When you google Mea Culpa, there’s also a wiki for it too. I guess I don’t know what they are actually called in Latin, so I thought the penitential act is this and the Kyrie.
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

And at how many parishes have you attended Mass in the last 6 months? What is happening in one parish has little or nothing to do with the other 17,200+/- in the US.

If you have an issue about it, speaking with the pastor would seem to make sense.

It’s something my family and I have noticed isn’t said very often anymore and in various parishes,we miss saying it !

In every Korean parish I’ve attended, I never had any omittions of the Confiteor.

I grew up pressing closed hand to heart when repeating “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grevious fault”

It’s a beautiful prayer and helps prepare for receiving Jesus.

It really depends on the priest. I’ve been in this parish almost 22 years and have seen 10 priests come and go. For the first 19 years we heard it maybe once or twice a year. With this latest priest it’s 98% of the time.

If the deacon is there, we don’t say the confiteor. If the deacon is not there, we do. When I go to the Fathers of Mercy chapel, they always say the confiteor.

I know this has been brought up here before and I know there are other options at that point in the Liturgy and I know it’s up to the priest which option to use and I’m not questioning the Priest. It seems more and more the confIteor is not being said. I feel like something is missing when it’s not said. How often is it said at your Parish or other Churches you attend? Do you have a preference either way?
It is said at every Mass I attend.

Every Mass during Lent and Advent.

Other than that, it is a flip of the coin. Well, I’m sure some people know which way it is going. The congregation doesn’t know.
