I have heard conflicting reports about the age of the Earth. There are three diffrent point of views that I am aware of.
  1. Some say six literal days and that the Earth is 6,000 to 11,000 years old.
  2. A pre Adameic race- they say God wiped out a human race before Adam and created the world over again. Making the Earth Millions of years old.
  3. God worked with evolution and the days of creation were actually thousands of years apart.
Could you shed some light on this question, please. God Bless

if you read the Genesis account no where do you find the reference to time being earth bound, but rather cosmic.

If you looked into the special theory of relativitity, and applied that with the standard model of the big bang, and computed how long it took for the earth to be created (using the relativity), the first “day” (24 hours as we know it today) was actually 8 billion years, the 2nd day was 4 billion, the 3rd was 2 billion, etc

add them up all up you get:

8 + 4 + 2 + 1 + .5 + .25 = 15.75 billion, the best estimate of the universe.

coincidence? I personally don’t think so. This is harmony, if you will, with the literal six day creation theory along with the standard big bang / relativity theory.

in short:

6 days (on earth), from absolute time (the moment of the big bang) = 15.75 billion years

I personally reject any young earth theory since it makes God to be a great deceiver because the earth we know, as well as the universe appear very old. Remember, He is the one who gave us the mind to study and an honest study of anything God made must bring us closer to knowing His truth and what He has done.

chaldean:

Current theory and observations suggest that the age of the universe is between 13.5 and 14 billion years.

Yes, I am familiar w/ what wiki says but other sources have suggested between 12 billion to 20 billion.

There is no definite answer, but Biblically we can trace the world back to 6000-10,000 years.

I find Chaldean’s Rite’s hypothesis very interesting.

Or we could use the scriptures to identify a 4.5 billion years old earth…would it be a correct interpretation is another question.
In Genesis, there are two different definitions for a Day.
God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
The first definition is the time when light hits upon a place on the earth (God called the light “day,” ). This is the time when God
is actively creating, so we’ll call it a Lord’s Day. However a Genesis Day is twice as long as it involves the night time as well (And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.)

Now,if we take the words of Peter: A Day for the Lord (Lord’s Day) is as a thousand years.

Some Jews take this also litterally, and so, I “personally” accept it…

chabad.org/library/article.asp?AID=108400

“However, the Talmud states that there is a predestined time when Mashiach
will come. If we are meritorious he may come even before that predestined
time. This “end of time” remains a mystery, yet the Talmud states that it
will be before the Hebrew year 6000. (The Hebrew year at the date of this
publication is 5763.)”

And so 2 Peter 3:8-9 reads:

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like
a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow
in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness…”

He is speaking to the chrisitans who are impatiently waiting for the coming
of Christ, having been told that they were living in the last Days…Here,
Peter seems to be claiming, the last Days, as meaning the next couple of
thousands of years, being in accordance with the Jewish Talmud. Therefore,
if 1 Day litterally can be 1,000 years, then if we continue his statement
“and a thousand years are like a day”. Either he is speaking of
timelessness, which is possible, or, if he takes a Day to be 1,000 years in
the litteral sense, then, 1,000 years equalling a Day could also be meant to
be taken litterally. If so, he
must be speaking of 2 separate and disntinct type of Days. The first mention
of Day is symbolically equal to 1,000 years. Now, he maybe saying that 1,000
years “of such a Day” is equal to the 2nd definition of Day, and let “this”
be a "Genesis Lord’s Day.
So, 1,000 years of a Day equalling 1,000 years =
364,000,000 years; and this would be equal to a Lord’s Day; and 364 million
years x 7 = 2.5 billion years. Now, if the Genesis Day speaks of
a Lord’s Day plus “morning till evening”, then, the 2.5
billion is to be doubled into 5 billion years.Even closer would be the belief that we are still within the 7th Day, reducing 5 billion by 364 million years (from evening till morning),for Genesis does not mention the evening to morning period in the 7th Day, which is equal to 4.6 billion years.

Certainly, I am speculating; however, it
matches one interpretation of scriptures with scientific data…

So if you look at something and come to the wrong conclusion it is not your fault nor can it be due to your lack of understanding, but rather it is God’s fault?
If something isn’t what it appears to be, does that make God deceptive?

Are we going to have that old battle again between the creationists and evolutionists?

The earth is as old as God has made it. According to science (astronomy), it is approximately 5 billion years old. According to religion it is exactly 6 thousand years old.

Gee, I could have written that myself. 🙂

This question really comes down to the question of whether we are capable, using our God-given powers of observation and reasoning, of understanding anything about the world around us (and thus about our God who created the world). Are we capable of collecting and interpreting evidence? That is, are we capable of doing real science? Or are we forever deceiving ourselves, thinking that things that are 10,000 years old are really 5 or 10 or 15 billion years old?

The problem with that latter view is that we know science works. The very existence of the computers we’re using on this forum attest to the fact that science works.

It makes me crazy to see Catholics adopt the grave errors of American fundamentalist sola Scriptura Protestantism and, against all objective evidence, claim that the evidence lies and that the universe is just a few thousand years old. Such beliefs, whether offered by Catholics or Protestants, are the mightiest atheist-producing factories the world has ever known.

I agree. I believe around 6000 years. I don’t believe that 4.5 billion years is possible, but that is me.

Better to say “according to some (but not all) interpretations of the Bible it is six thousand years old”.

The young earth interpretation of the Bible is not universal among Christians nor is it mandated by the Catholic church.

You are correct about that

Most scientists agree that the earth was created last Thursday. So it’s about six days old.

Who cares how old the earth is? What has that to do with your salvation and worship of the one true God? As far as I’m concerned it COULD have been made last Thursday!

For one thing, it matters very much to those who are investigating the Christian faith, and to those who may be having doubts about their faith. If Christians point to the blue sky and say “that sky is green, the bible says so!” then rational, reasonable people will walk away from them muttering about how ridiculous Christianity must be to teach such nonsense.

Faith and reason do not conflict. Fides et ratio. This is Catholic teaching, and we need to guard against American fundamentalist Protestant error distorting that Catholic teaching.

Nor is it rational in this day and age.
Due to pride, we can therefore say, if we are wrong, God has deceived us. How humiliating it would be if we were proven wrong, after all we know what happened. 😉

There comes a point at which it is not rational to claim the earth is 10,000 years old, and we have long since passed that point.

Again I ask: can we ever, using our God-given powers of observation and reason, know anything about our world? What is your answer?
