Like you said above, simply feeling homosexual attraction is not a sin at all, nor is a mere temptation to homosexual activity. I would strongly reassure your friend that, provided he keeps himself from lust and immoral sexual acts (whether hetero- or homosexual) he is not going to endanger his soul. God loves him, and wants to one day heal him of these disordered attractions. Your friend WILL have this healing if he chooses it, either when he goes to be with the Lord, or maybe even sooner if God grants it.
We all have our crosses to bear. Perhaps you can suggest that he offers his struggles in reparation for the sins of the world?
