How should I respond to this? (homosexuality)

TeenageConvert,

Here is the Catholic Catechism’s entry for this topic.

Like you said above, simply feeling homosexual attraction is not a sin at all, nor is a mere temptation to homosexual activity. I would strongly reassure your friend that, provided he keeps himself from lust and immoral sexual acts (whether hetero- or homosexual) he is not going to endanger his soul. God loves him, and wants to one day heal him of these disordered attractions. Your friend WILL have this healing if he chooses it, either when he goes to be with the Lord, or maybe even sooner if God grants it.

We all have our crosses to bear. Perhaps you can suggest that he offers his struggles in reparation for the sins of the world?

I would look to the catechism for guidance on your approach to someone who is homosexual and your treatment in thought and action of individuals who are homosexuals.

There are several possibilities for you how to deal with this situation. I will suppose that you are homosexual. The worst option would be to have a secret relationship with a man, remain catholic and feel guilty about it all the time. If it were so, don’t start a relationship with a man. Or you could follow your heart and start questioning your catholic faith. You certainly don’t believe everything that the church teaches already. The church abandoned a lot of its former dogma. I expect it to start tolerating faithful homosexual relationships sooner or later. You don’t harm anyone if you love a man and he loves you. It may not make sense biologically but only you know what you feel.
