How the sexual toxicity of the 1960s has harmed the Church

The only way to reduce the toxicity is to reduce and eliminate its sources, including: sex outside of marriage including fornication, cohabitation, adultery, homosexual acts, and artificial contraception which enables the toxicity. I might also note that in doing so one would also reduce poverty. It has been noted that the best way to ensure that one does not live in poverty is to complete one’s education (high school at least), do not have sex until married, and marry after the age of 21. It sounds as though following Catholic moral law is a benefit.
Apart from noting that I have never seen so many uses of the word ‘toxicity’ in so few sentences, how do you propose to stop people having sex?

Do you really think kids still don’t have premarital sex even when their parents teach them not to?

You can call it grave matter but you don’t know if it’s mortal for most.

Even conservative Protestants don’t see anything wrong with using artificial contraception.
Yes they do. But there aren’t many conservative Protestants.

Prior to 1930, all Protestants regarded contraception as immoral, because they held to the Natural Law. It wasn’t just a a “Catholic thing”. Over the next few decades most denominations gradually accepted the secular morality on most things, and forgot the Natural Law, but still took for granted the Natural Law in other ways.

Now secular society is enthusiastically trashing the last vestiges of the Natural Law; in my state the governor lit up the Trade Center to rejoice that they can now kill babies born in an abortion.

The rapid secularism will lead some moderate Protestants to go along with the secular trends, all the way. Some others will become Catholic, or something else that respects the whole Natural Law. The middle position or partial position will disappear.

Read the testimony of Kimberly Hahn, the daughter, brother, wife of conservative Protestant ministers, re contraception, while she herself was conservative Protestant.

Don’t put all boomer types into a broad brush category. I was there. There were specific, usually easy to identify, people who all had a new and destructive message: “Have sex with anybody, live with your girlfriend, marriage is just a piece of paper, smoke dope and use other illegal drugs.” They kept calling it freedom: mom, dad, the Church could be ignored. “Don’t trust anyone over 30!” So, who could we trust? They didn’t say it in so many words but it boiled down to: “Trust us.” They were 180 degrees opposite from Catholics in their thinking.

Not possibly, definitely. Sex education was resisted by parents. Why? Because they had been teaching their kids about the “birds and the bees.” Kids who grew up on farms saw how everything went and the end result. Then, a group of people convinced school boards that mom and dad were now suddenly incompetent, or too embarrassed or who now lacked the knowledge imparted by their parents. By 1973, when this nonsense hit Catholic schools, it was not presented in a very scholarly way.

That is the hope of some. Fortunately, among a new generation of Catholics, a reaffirmation of what is right, good and practical is occurring.

I’d like to remind everyone that this forum is not about Protestants. It’s called Catholic Answers for a reason. No one was taught Protestantism in Catholic schools. And God always leaves a faithful remnant no matter how bad things get.

No, CAF welcomes Protestants, and others, to all forums. I find their (name removed by moderator)ut valuable, whether it be about Protestantism, about Catholicism, or non religious subjects.

Thorflr has expressed some good ideas on many threads.

This is why I previously said that your assessment of this is just one perspective. The majority of children didn’t grow up on farms. Farm animals didn’t demonstrate premarital chastity to them. Parents didn’t give their children adequate education regarding sex. Many farm children were already off at boarding school by puberty. There was a need for education in the biology of human sexuality. In Catholic schools it is possible to have that accompanied by education in Catholic morality as well.

I responded to your point of the sin of pre marital sex i.e. fornication.

Scripture says this about fornication (links are operational) that sin is deadly/grave/mortal

Ephesians 5:3-5 lists deadly sins. Those that keep one from heaven. The first sin mentioned, Immorality in that passage, (the Greek word from the Greek study bible, is πορνεία = porneia = fornication, ) … 5 Be sure of this, that no fornicator πόρνος or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Does that sound like a little venial sin or a whopping mortal sin that sends one to hell if one dies in that sin?

As an aside, One doesn’t go to hell for venial sin.

Your comments are inaccurate and misleading. The heads of the family, in the city and rural areas, were overruled and had their position taken over by total strangers. The goal was not teaching biology but about exposing young people, as a group, to false and misleading ideas about human sexuality. Those who promoted ‘sexual freedom’ had the goal of destroying the natural, time-tested relationships between men and women. And it’s not just me who thinks that.

So, do you think that the “sexual toxicity” identified by JimG can be eliminated, including the reduction in poverty that he mentions, if you’re only talking to other Catholics? This would seem to be an issue in our society that is bigger than just the Catholic Church. And I doubt that a “faithful remnant” are going to need to be reminded about the supposed dangers of this “sexual toxicity”. I assumed that this was something that Jim believed was a problem outside any “faithful remnant”.

Yes, it is a matter for everyone, not just for Catholics. The sexual revolution was harmful to everyone, not just Catholics.

I didn’t grow up on a farm, never had sex education in grades K thru 12; yet my high school had an unplanned pregnancy rate of zero, and contraception was pretty much unavailable. Now we have sex education as early as kindergarten and every year thereafter, making sure that kids know about every possible permutation of sexual activity, give them condoms and pills, and tell them to be safe. The result has been more sex, more experimentation, more STD’s, more abortion.

We teach kids not to cross a busy street in the middle of traffic, to eat healthy, avoid harmful drugs, but teaching them chastity is too high a bar.

Not all parents back then taught their kids about the “birds and the bees” and not everyone back then grew up on a farm. My parents who are in their 80s weren’t taught anything by their parents about the “birds and the bees”. Families are all different and have different cultures, sometimes depending to some extent on where they came from whether from the South or New England, etc. Some families talk a lot about all sorts of different things at the dinner table and elsewhere, and some don’t.

Those who promoted ‘sexual freedom’ had the goal of destroying the natural, time-tested relationships between men and women.
While there was and is a sexual freedom agenda going on, there was a growing recognition both in the Church and society that it is females that suffer most from an environment of sexual ignorance. When the topic is hidden behind taboos, it is women that get the short end. Institutional education about sexuality and sexual ethics was due because I disagree that it was parents alone that formed moral values in the past. Society itself had a base line of morality and sexual ethics that supported or reinforced a moral standard. I believe you are falling for that fantasy that the past Church was golden and we should return to it to resolve all our problems.

Exactly right. Society itself had a base line of morality. The institutions of society following the sexual revolution decided to reject the old standard and impose the new standard, which is no standard at all.

I had a sociology course in college a couple years ago and I assure you it is completely pozzed.

Present company excluded with you Ed 😋

Even my own parents and their friends were all for that lifestyle for years. Suddenly now that they’ve hit 70 years of age, forget it. They’re so conservative now that they make the Amish look like punk rockers.
