How to be a good catholic wife?

A few tips that have helped me… first, I agree about letting your husband be the man of the house. I defer to him on some things, as many things as I can without getting into a tizzy! Even to the point that when the children ask to be excused from the table, they have to ask Daddy. He’s the CEO of our family - I’m the CFO & COO. He’s leadership, strategy. I’m operations, financials, details.

Second, have an end of the day routine. Perhaps it’s sitting down with a glass of wine when you’re both home before you start dinner, and you ask him what he did that day that he was proud of. In our hectic lives, just finding a few minutes for each other each day is so important. Especially now that we have kids.

Third, if he’s early to bed, you should too. And vice versa. Fit your schedule to his if you can, because even just reading in bed together is good time.

Fourth, we have a saying that 80-20 is 50-50. If you think you’re doing 80% of the work, you’re probably doing 50%. Don’t nag - just find what he likes to do as far as housework and you deal with the rest.

Fifth, learn to cook, even simple dishes. A well kept home and a nice dinner go a long way to saying “I love you.” Men don’t want roses and romance for the most part. They want to feel cared for and important.

It may sound like I’m saying put him first - I am! The ideal marriage is where each partner puts the other first (behind God of course), but neither expects to be put first. When we expect, assume, insist - that’s not being Catholic. We keep a copy of St. Francis’s prayer in our bedroom and I look at it daily. Be simple, humble, poor.

:compcoff: Just reading along, I can always stand to learn a lot about being a good wife. 😉
