How to become a Protestant Pastor? Perhaps the reason why so many bible interpretations?

I don’t quite understand some of these threads and what motivates people to post on them. I have known both Pastor and Priest that have been called by God in their chosen ministries. I could see the Holy Spirit work with them both! As far as interpreting the Bible, I do feel that also has to come from God. There are some that interpret to fullfill their own need, but their are those whom you can see the Spirit work with them. I believe they are all chosen by God, Priest,Pastor, Rabbi, ect… to fill God’s purpose that only he can fully understand.May be some of these threads could use a little more respest for one and anothers differences.I do not have any denomination which I feel is right for me and my family, but I respect those that have been called to their particular faiths. I don’t always agree with any particular Church ( But I didn’t always agrre with my Parents) but I still have resect for them. Just my two cents for what it is worth.🤷

did you really see god in these men? If so what did he look like …

Ahhh let me guess, you didn’t actually see any invisible god (or manifestation of god) but rather the men you’re referring to are merely good men (and you confuse that as some sort of witness of faith and a holy calling).

It’s not that I disrespect such people … even though I don’t believe in the veracity of the bible (or that of any religion for that matter); but what I said is actually true (well except for the Kracker Jacks line). You can get a preaching certification online (go to Google and check it out for yourself).

**I am sure your right that some can get a degree on line.I can not explain to you what God looks like because no one has seen him and lived.I can only tell you there is a light or ora around certain Godly people I have seen in my life. I don’t expect you to understand or believe it, I just know it is there, just like the air we breath, I have never seen that either.Pope John Paul II had that light about him and I am not even Catholic. Was he a good man? Yes, but there was something more about him than just that. I don’t expect others to believe it, I can only try to explain what you ask me.👍
Peace be with you! **

well, what does this aura look like? If there truly is some mystical aura around believers then explain it to me if you can … I’m curious.

Sure Pope John Paul had an extremely kind and well honed humble demeanor, wrought through decades of rigorous training and discipline. No mystery, he not only was a really good guy, but he was extremely well trained on how to project that goodness (and even carry himself in a very regal way).

Nothing other worldly here … just learned behavior like everything else.

You do understand that there are Diocesan Priests who own homes and have a good amount of money. Unless they are religious priests, they are not required to give up their things.

Furthermore, while I am not a Protestant any more, all you are doing is trying to downplay the study that Protestant Pastors go through to be ordained. If you want to attack what Protestants believe, go for it, just be polite. However, attacking the way that a Protestant becomes a Pastor does not do anything beneficial.

I do not see how the laying of hands makes the process for a Catholic to be ordained any more spiritual. If I lay my hands on you, is that automatically a spiritual event? Furthermore, many Protestant denominations do have a formal ordination process.

Also, you forget that there are Priests in the Catholic Church - though primarily the Eastern Catholic Churches - THAT ARE MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN!!! You are belittling them in your misguided attempts to belittle Protestants. All you will accomplish by belittling someone is to make them despise you. In this case, most Protestants will associate what you are saying with the opinions of most Catholics, if not the Catholic Church itself. Non-Christians may associate your cold attacks with Christianity itself. You need to remember, as we all do, that each of our behavior drastically affect the opinions of other people regarding the groups we belong to.

Furthermore, there is a significant reason for the differences in the ordination of Pastors as opposed to Priests. Catholics see the Priest as a representative of Christ. In the Protestant churches, Pastors are generally only thought of as people who have a deep amount of knowledge about their faith, thus making them more similar to a Jewish Rabbi than a Catholic Priest (though the duties of the Pastor are generally closer to that of the Priest).

EDIT: Also, the reason for the differences in interpretations of the various verses of the Bible in Protestantism is not because of the way in which they become Pastors. Rather, it is because they do not believe that there is any one person who has an inherent authority to determine what a verse means (though some Protestants do agree with Catholics that a Ecumenical Council can declare dogma without erring). The divisions within Protestantism is merely a symptom of this.
I don’t know of any diocesan priests with a good amount of money and to the best of my knowledge, the homes are often simple and owned by the Church. They also work extremely hard administering to their flock.

I can get a lot of things online, but it doesn’t mean they are legitimate. Honestly, it doesn’t take certification to preach what you believe to be truth.

“If you want a half way decent education, but generally don’t have a taste for the ladies … there’s always the RCC”🤷

This isn’t even worth commenting on.

I maybe wrong in this one, but I’ve always seen the role of non-Catholic Christian pastors as ones that Preach and Lead, where the congregation looks to them as the focus, where I’ve always felt that Catholic Priests job is more of a servant to serve the congregation and administer the sacraments. I have yet to meet a non charismatic great public speaker non-Catholic Christian pastor, I have encountered tons of very humble quiet and not necessarily great preacher priests but very service oriented priests, in addition to great preacher priests.
Not wrong, but a little narrow. My dad was a Lutheran pastor, and as such always claimed his first duty in the Church was to preach the word *and *administer the sacraments, as that is what the confessions call for. Of course, as part of these functions, he visited the sick and shut-in, was in charge of catechesis, Baptized, married, and buried members of his congregation and others, as well as other responsibilities.

Hi James,

Becoming a Catholic Priest, is not exactly the same as becoming a protestant Pastor. Yes, the schooling and the Seminary for a Catholic wanting to be Priest or Protestant wanting to be a Pastor, is a must.

A diploma from a college and a 4 to 6 years of seminary makes one a protestant pastor.

However, These credentials above does not make one a Catholic Priest. The process of becoming a Catholic Priest is deeper in spirituality. A Catholic Priest becomes ordained priest by the laying on of hands by the successors of the Apostles.

Also, a Catholic Priest gives up everything for the service of Jesus Christ! Read (Luke 14: 33) So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.

Also, read Luke (18: 28-30) 28 Then Peter said: Behold, we have left all things, and have followed thee. 29 Who said to them: Amen, I say to you, there is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, 30 Who shall not receive much more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

James, the Above 2 bible verse should tell you that in order to become a Catholic Priest a diciple of Jesus Christ one must abandond everything House, or parents, or brethren, of wife, or children, for the kingdom of God sake. This what a Catholic Priest does he leaves everything for Jesus Christ sake.

As for the Protestant pastor, He has a house, he has a wife, he has children, therefore he is not a true disciple. I am not saying this, the bible verses above is saying this.

Not a true disciple:mad:
That is not what the Church teaches. Eastern Rite is not less Catholic than Latin Rite
Bigotry. Obvious bigotry:mad:

so if men had to give up their wives … then why is divorce not permitted? Sorry, I guess that is a trolling question :D:D

Cannot tell who question is directed to. You have attached my name to his statement
well yeah … I was responding to your quote directly on that point (but like I said it wasn’t a serious question) 🙂

abandoning one’s wife and children doesn’t sound very responsible.

As a former Fundamentalist who had started attending ‘Bible College’ with the intent to become a missionary, I can say that there is virtually no discernment or formation process. Compare to the Jesuits who have a 12 year formation! And also, in my former faith tradition, it wasn’t 4 years of college pus seminary. It was just a degree from a “Bible believing” college. I am not saying this lack of formation is true for all Protestants, but it is true of my former faith tradition.

How much formal education did Peter have?

He had an intense period of discernment and formation for approxomately 3 years as a Disciple of Jesus Christ. Discernment and formation is a joke at Fundamentalist Bible colleges. You do realize that that was a straw man argument, right?

Not at all.
Peter was taught by Christ. Christ is the same today as He was yesterday. He sill teaches His disciples, those that listen. Does your church teach you how to hear from God?

Absolutely. Ever hear of Adoration? Contemplative prayer? The Spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius? Our Church is the one that is built upon a Rock, and not sand.Ours is the Church under attack by the devil. Just listen to yourself. You are suggesting that a pastor enter the field of the modern world without preparation. There are no words to describe the fecklessness of that idea.

Adoration of what?
Contemplative prayer is almost exclusively taught and practiced in monasteries, not in semminary. Ignatius exercises are a dead end street.
Listen to you. You are saying that a relationship with Christ is secondary to school.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrement. Medetative and contemplative prayer is used extensively in Catholic devotions. Examples: Litany of the Saints, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Rosary. You are completely ignoring what I am stressing: Discernment and Formation. And truth be told, the Catholic Priesthood has a higher standard of dedication than anything I encountered as a Fundamentalist. Vows are unheard of in the Protestant ministry. Diocesan Priests have vowns of celibacy and obedience. Orders add poverty on top of the other two. Fundamentalists? No sacrifice needed. They can marry. They have no one to be obedient to. Poverty? Talk to Jerry Fallwell and the televangelists about that one. Seminary is more than just learning the faith out of a book. Education for a Pastor is vitally important. Christianity is not simple. CS Lewis said that nothing real is simple.

PS Before you call Adoration of the Eucharist idolatry, it isn’t. It would be if it were not the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. But that is a topic for another thread.
