Hello,

I was raised Catholic, but once I turned 12 my family didn’t take me to church anymore. I didn’t really learn that much from my parents (church related or otherwise) because they were abusive, and I moved out right after graduating high school. I became engaged at 21 and my husband and I didn’t have a clue on how to have a wedding or what to do as we had no one to help us (his father is out of town except for a few weeks a year, also my husband isn’t religious). We got married by the state when we were 22. I’m now almost 27, and we’re going to be having our 5 year anniversary this year.

Now I’m reconnecting with my extended family (all Catholics) and I’ve started attending mass again recently. I am remembering all the things I was taught at the CCD classes I went to, and I want to continue doing the things I should be doing for rekindling my faith.

I think I read that I can have my marriage blessed and recognized by the Church, is that true? If it’s true how do I go about having that done?

Since I haven’t been to Confession in a long time, should I schedule a time and bring a long list with me? What if I forget something?

Are there any other suggestions for a person in my situation? If so I’d love to hear it! 🙂

Sorry if anything doesn’t make sense, I’d be happy to clarify.

Thanks!

Yes, it is. And you can complete any sacraments you are still in need of, such as confirmation, if you did not receive them as a child.

Welcome home!

Make an appointment with the pastor at your local parish. You can tell him what you’ve told us and tell him you want to have your marriage convalidated (“blessed”).

The priest will help you. Just tell him it’s been X years, and you need help making a confession.

Just take things one step at a time and don’t get overwhelmed. Your priest can guide you through everything.

Thank you very much for the reply!

I will make sure to contact the parish and get started. 😃

Yes! A young Catholic not fully brought up in the faith coming back is the kind of thing that pastors love to see!

Congrats on coming home!

I was in a similar position as you about 2 years ago. Hubby and I came into the Church together.
I was your age and hadn’t been to a confession in about 20 years. I made an appointment and sat down with my priest.

I actually did make a list after thinking about all the big things I wanted to confess. I did start out by saying I’ve broken all but one of the commandments but I took out my list and went into further detail.

If you forget anything just go back to confession again as soon as you can.

just to add on to this already great advice. your parish probably offers RCIA classes you can take in order to learn more.

welcome home. we are so very glad to have you

Well stated.

You Both deserve a bunch of Flowers, or free Gold Class movie Tickets…
Congratulations on what your doing.

If you make a good faith attempt to recall all your mortal sins in confession and unintentionally forget any, even the forgotten ones are forgiven when the priest absolves you. It is not necessary to mention the forgotten sins at your next confession but it is a good idea.

Thanks again everyone 😛

Flowers or movie tickets work for me!

I did buy the New American Bible (I’ve only had an old King James version my grandmother had given me) and the Catholic Catechism off of Amazon; I didn’t know about the Youcat, thanks for the tip.

That’s great about the forgotten sins being forgiven too in Confession, that’s reassuring to know.

I think I might look into the RCIA classes, I’ll ask about that when I schedule my confession.

Great suggestions, I really appreciate it!
