Self-knowledge is part of spiritual growth and those who fail to learn and grow their true selves, fail in their spiritual journey.
Seeking to be the center of attention is the ego driving your emotions. The ego is developed over our youthful years, and it’s good to look back and understand how that happened, in order to let go, forgive and move on.
Humility begins with accepting your true self, and destroying the false masks the ego has created.
Of course, to know yourself you need to know God, because as soon as we think about God, we are also aware of our naked true self in his presence. We should seek to grow in faith, which will help us become the person that God intended when He created us.
Also, try to become aware of your thoughts, and to let go of thoughts which are self-serving. Learn to live in the present, where God is. The ego is weakened in the present, but becomes strong by dwelling on the past or looking to the future. The ego, tries to justify itself by the actions you took in the past, but also tries to create an image of self through the imagination.
In the present moment, the ego has little power. The present is where God is. God has no time, but is in the present.
Of course prayer is the source for building a relationship with Jesus Christ, who alone knows your inner-self.
